I've granted permission for Graymans thread to open.
Ill most likely be offline over the course.
Play nice. I do have feelings somewhere, even If they're hard to find. Something you say now could potentially come back to haunt me when I'm in my 40's and having an actual mid life crisis.

take a few hours to learn to lucid dream and you might find it more fun than being awake.

Ah, so by merely adding a sachet of sweet soy sauce, the same old same old packet of instant noodles have now miraculously transformed into an 'unique wok style' dish.

Crafty bastards.

Eating and cooking are separate tasks though. Cooking is optional.

Taste bud monotony has a simple solution: wait until you are actually hungry enough, that you don't care anymore. That's a strategy I've used when I've been running thin on food stamps and couldn't afford great stuff. That dodgy can of beans that someone gave you for free, is going to sound a lot more appealing when your stomach is growling mercilessly.

I've been cheating myself on sleep recently. Getting 5..6 hours instead of 8+. A liberal dose of caffeine in the diet, from coffee in my case, seems to enable me to do it. It's not a good habit to keep up long term though. Lotta research saying that sleep deprivation is correlated with various harms, can't remember if anything has been shown to be causal. Also the coffee works because I usually don't drink it, but when I'm visiting my Mom's house, she always has a pot available.

Caffeine is the greatest shit ever. Can't get enough of it.

Caffeine makes me run my mouth in a sort of "motor mouth" way that others can find upsetting and off-putting. I think I communicate a great deal of non-verbal stress and anxiousness when it has jacked me up like that. I also become less good at hiding any negative emotions I'm experiencing. I think they bubble up along with the motor mouth stuff.

This sort of thing is part of what got me kicked out of a board gaming group over a year ago. Although, I think board games themselves have some contributing psychological effects. I become very focused on the algorithms necessary to optimize my play in the games. Things like being terribly nice to the other players go right out the window. If you're playing with "hardcore" or "serious" gamers, that's not a big deal, everyone is jaded like you are. But if you're playing with people who have a strong need to have others be "nice", well, it seems I become too ugly for them. Hey I grew up backstabbing people in games of Diplomacy, overrunning the European great powers. I think you're supposed to destroy the positions of other players, that's how you win games. Saying someone made a "dick move" is sort of a compliment. Like, why didn't I think of that?

People pull the same kinds of crap in internet debate, which is why I sought out this INTP forum. Hoped that people would be thicker skinned. I think for the most part they are.

Try saying : Irish Wristwatch out loud.

I've been saying "Irish wristwatch...FUCK!" for the past 2 minutes. I *can* say it, but my mouth feels confused. At least, I think I can say it. But not without the swearing.

I tried Sly's too - took a few goes before I heard it. :D

Of course the "victims" of the "terrorist" attack had already destroyed the entire population of Alderan and were about to wipe out anyone inhabiting one of Yavin's moons that they didn't approve of. Yeah, I'm sure the French Resistance perpetrated some terrorist attacks on the occupying Nazis. What of it?

Well we nuked Nagasaki and Hiroshima...all's fair in love and war right?

i has dis idear.
so according to what i read infants are born with 3x(or some large amount) more neurons that what ends up being used(i dont remember if it was neurons in the brain), because they dont all create connections. but that cell death is apoptosis and we know that nerve growth factor prevents apoptosis, so can we just flood little infants with nerve growth factor an make some super geniuses??:elephant:

A lot of rental ads in Sweden say "renting out to female" or "women only". I wonder what sort of crazy uproar there would be if someone put "no women, please", or "no blacks allowed" in the ads.. or heaven forbid: "no Muslims".

Discrimination is bad.. but only if it fits the current narrative.

That's illegal in the USA. Federal law. I think the only exception is ads for choosing housemates. Have you looked up the actual laws for Sweden? Just because people post things doesn't make it legal, and you could get them in trouble for it.

He did not specify that. Those notices could easily have been come from landlords / property owners. They also didn't include any phrases about seeking roommates or housemates. One is about private right of association, i.e. who you choose to shack up with. The other is about running rental properties as a business.

I just killed a few moths and feel terrible about it. It didn't even occur to me that I could've caught them and let them outside. But tbh, that probably would've been too much effort for possible moth-return. I care, but not enough not to kill them if it's the more reliably moth-free choice. I don't want a moth nation in my home. I tend to let insects roam as they please but if they start causing issues, I get fatal.

But now I feel horrible thinking about it squirming a little when I saw I hadn't quite managed to kill it entirely. I'd caught two mating, and its partner had been utterly crushed. My heart wrenched inside and I redoubled my efforts to finish the deed. I was apologising to each one too. WHAT THE FUCK.

So does this make me a much more terrible person than someone who thinks it's fine to kill them? Because I actually feel awful, but do it anyway.

I don't think killing insects is actually terrible ethically tbh. I just imbue them with far too much humanity.

This empathy serves no purpose. I don't have enough to join the F camp, and I have too much for the detached heartless bastards of the world (hiya!). It's actually just useless pain. Maybe I should switch it off.

I think the problem is the same thing which led me to become vegetarian. Knowing I was able to form some sort of friendly connection to animals in general, I couldn't fathom how I could *eat* them. It seemed an abominably twisted act. I coped with the dissonance for a few years but had been slowly phasing out meat. Eventually it was easy.

This is the same. I feel friendly towards insects, but their inconvenience towards me pisses me off. I'm a bit worried this is going to end in me 'resolving' the dissonance by going to massive efforts not to kill them. That just seems like taking it too far. Obviously someone else's 'inconvenience' isn't sufficient reason to justify thoughtless cruelty, but that red flag alone isn't enough to dismiss the argument.

holy fuck what am i saying. i hate this.

Priorities. An old, old friend once told me that I spend way too much energy worrying about how ethically I'm treating *cockroaches*. On the *street*. He pointed out there are so many far bigger issues to worry about, that I'm wasting my time and energy, and that even if it were a worthwhile cause I can't fix it all by myself anyway.

This is the exact same problem I have with everything. Tiny things get blown out of proportion and I don't know how to stop until I've fixed them. Like in teaching. I forget there're other things to think about. It's so hard to remember big-picture structure, long-term goals, etc, if I'm working on a problem myself. I can do it if I'm directing someone else, but not if I'm involved. I get lost in the trees.

Why can't I have a job where that kind of nitpicking perfectionism is necessary? (Actually it would be fantastic if I were exclusively teaching advanced students, because they need that level of refinement.) I know there must be some value to what my brain does, but generally it just makes me too exhausted to face life because I know I'll never be able to get things as 'right' as they need to be. I'll get lost and get 1% uselessly perfect, and forget about the other 99% of life. AAAARGH.

I just killed a few moths and feel terrible about it. It didn't even occur to me that I could've caught them and let them outside.

I do not swat flies. Even if they are buzzing around a room in loud, irritating manner, I figure the fly can be a tool for learning to be more patient and less bothered about such things. There is usually no purpose in killing them. Being irritated about their buzzing is not a purpose, that is simply something I should get over.

I would kill a fly if I thought they would contribute to a food safety issue, i.e. if they were landing on human feces somewhere. The woods-oriented Rainbows community takes some pretty serious and stringent precautions about such hazards. For instance, all food dishes have to be kept covered. Trench latrines (aka "shitters") are done in a particular manner, I think with lime available to throw in.

My basic belief is that killing should have a purpose. Whether we obey that moral code, probably has little Existential consequence, especially in the case of insects. However if gods existed anywhere in the universe, mightn't they regard your own life as akin to that of an insect? If you cannot treat a lower being with appropriate caution, why would you expect a higher being to give you any consideration? There may not be any higher beings anywhere in the universe, we might be at the top of the heap. But even still, as a model of how a higher being should behave, I say we should not kill without a purpose.

Moths do basically 2 destructive things in a household: infest food and chew holes in clothes.

The former isn't really an issue, strictly speaking it's extra protein. But if the aesthetics of moth eggs in your cereal bother you, it is easily handled. Keep things well sealed. Don't leave open cereal boxes, that's basically moth food.

The latter, well, I guess you don't want a big moth population in your house. Screens and food control should help with that. Some people use moth balls but other people have bad reactions to them. I'm not sure that killing individual moths would help with such a situation in any event. Rather, one would need to address the conditions that cause the problem.

Gratuitous insect management tip: fruit flies like to live in the slime under the rubber lip of your garbage disposal. Cleaning under there with something sufficiently effective, like something with bleach maybe ?, should solve that problem. And of course don't leave your fruit out in bowls to get bruised up and rot, they're called fruit flies for a reason.

Another gratuitous insect management tip: when ants have formed a line of invasion into your house, they are following a chemical trail. Any household cleaner applied to the trail, will destroy it. The ants may figure out another trail somewhere, or they may not at all. You don't have to start out with wiping out ants, you can start with wiping up their trails, and that may solve the problem.

I live out of my car. At one point, I was surprised to have a functioning ant colony underneath my car. It had been parked in my Mom's driveway long enough when I was visiting, that they had taken root there. I find ant colonies fascinating, especially the defensive behavior of rushing the pupae to safety when the top of the colony is exposed. Which in my case, was the simple act of opening the passenger door.

I couldn't bring myself to kill the colony. Individually I think the ants are cute, and collectively I find them quite interesting. I simply let them live in my car for awhile, thinking their colony couldn't survive indefinitely and the problem would eventually go away.

Sometimes they would tickle me in my sleep and that was irritating. Rarely they would bite me. I did kill some ants at times, depending on my mood about them. Sharing personal space with ants isn't the greatest, although in moderation it is doable. I was relieved when the colony finally died for some reason.

The ants had one beneficial effect. They tended to remove crumbs and other foreign organic matter from my car. Really good cleanup crew! I might hire 'em again for that.

I agree with you. I was killing the moths because I was on the tail-end of eradicating a large moth infestation. I wanted to get rid of the stragglers before they bred again. Hmm, eggs and larvae may not bother you but for me they're enough reason to kill.

I generally don't kill without a purpose either, though I'm not sure it really makes sense. It's a nice idea. When I've allowed things to grow as they please though, they tend to cause problems. Heh, your approach to insects is quite like mine. I'm much more careless about killing ants, but I can imagine living with a colony like that for a while too. At some point though I start to question what I'm doing. There are other somewhat convincing arguments in favour of killing - when the insects have set up a large home in your area. You're "protecting your territory", the way any other animal would. (That struck me as a fairly weak argument though.)

Thanks for the tips. That one with ants should help.

Really pissed off over this facebook thing.

I don't think anyone I know gained access, and I haven't been notified of a hack.

I'm missing about 5, 000 photo's.

No idea what to do, make a new account? Long ting.

My own fault I know, I shouldn't have been keeping shit on there anyway.

Now that you think about it between the Roman empire and the Catholic Church, Rome was a major power for thousands of years. I wonder if there is some internal powerblock that survived/ruled behind the scenes all that time.

Catholicism didn't require Rome to be powerful. France, Spain, and Portugal were powerful Catholic countries for instance. Of course the unifying concept of Catholicism and the center of its power in Rome was important, but actual combat with other powers depended on other countries that were Catholic.
