I wonder if there is enough interest to start a BOOK CLUB SUB FORUM? There are so many good quality free books out there on the internet - such as this one

http://www.archive.org/details/ClosingOfTheAmericanMind

The complete text of Allan Bloom's great work on the decay of American life and the political-intellectual causes of the decline of humane learning. It is now more relevant and pertinent than when he wrote it over two decades ago.

Since its publication the most prestigious universities in America have seen a continual and ever more rapid decline in what little seriousness, depth, and intellectual discipline was left in them. This is true for both the students and especially the faculty. The most recent generations of academics are strangely more frivolous or enslaved to contemporary trends, fashions, and crass public opinions than those of merely three decades ago. The best european universities have followed down America's path, unable to resist the strength of its influence and (as Bloom says) gullible towards all fashionable innovations. Such conflicts as Philosophy/Revelation, or the grave questions about the deleterious effects of fanatical egalitarianism can hardly be appreciated. Candid discussions about the relations between the sexes have become nearly impossible or even dangerous as a result of a persistant and insidious soft moralism.

In Britain, where academic bigotry, cowardice, and historical prejudices reign, Allan Bloom's name is an anathema among academics: his books are despised. In order to escape having to make the efforts necessary to confront his ideas, they are disdainfully ignored. In France, Germany, Japan, and now China Bloom's reflections have been received with greater openness, introspection, and engagement.

Nevertheless, as far as this writer is aware, the book has rarely been appreciated for what it is, even by its friends and supporters.

The book's power and profundity are demonstrated by its continued ability to stir up blind indignation, hatred among the ignorantly sophisticated, and to bring infamy upon its author, even though he has been dead these last 17 years. In short, Bloom's analysis goes directly to the core of the most thoughtlessly held prejudices of our time. It is an untimely book, and more than a book.

This scanned version is offered especially to those students in universities across the country who long to become something, to know the true, the good, and the beautiful, and who (unwittingly) seek an experience of greatness which has been denied to them. Bloom can be a true friend & guide to the student lost in the fetid Hades of the contemporary university.

I recommend reading "Memories, Dreams, Reflections" by C.G. Jung.
Supposedly Jung was also an INTP, so reading about his thoughts on life hasn't been like reading to me at all. It was more like seeing myself think.

Found it at the www.archive.org, but I needed a special license to read it.

As soon as I have time (mayhap in the next few weeks) I'll read both of those.

I've wanted to read Bloom's book for some time, so I'd be more than happy to read along with other sub-forum members.

We could establish weekly/monthly reading goals and discuss as we progress either in forum or chat format.

I've always hoped for something like that. It'll be like a super book club.

BUMP. This would be a great idea. It would also be cool if there was a master reading list for INTPs. I already have The Giver and The Stranger in mind. Maybe A Clockwork Orange for the offbeat humour?

I have confidence in the userbase. Basically we could either:

  1. suggest books that might be meaningful to an INTP
  2. suggest good books in general

I think many books on the Banned Books list is a good place to start. Most of the ideas where likely put forward by INTPs.

Fahrenheit 451 (about book burning)

[This book is about censorship and those who ban books for fear of creating too much individualism and independent thought. In late 1998, this book was removed from the required reading list of the West Marion High School in Foxworth, Mississippi. A parent complained of the use of the words "God damn" in the book. Subsequently, the superintendent instructed the the teacher to remove the book from the required reading list.]

Alot of the other books are also banned for their independent thinking, anti-establisment queries.

ALSO:

A Brave New World
1984
Slaughterhouse Five
One Flew Over A Cuckoos Nest (the movie is brilliant - premise is to make one think who is really more insane in the mental hospital- the inmates or the staff)
Catcher in the Rye
Rebecca

In his house at R'lyeh
Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges
Ulysses by James Joyce
The Illuminatus Trilogy by Robert Shea & Robert Anton Wilson
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Also, I second Slaughterhouse-Five and Fahrenheit 451 (I haven't read any of the others except The Catcher in the Rye, which I think is overrated.)

I love the way this thread is going!! :D I shall let you guys organise this (no procrastinating on the list!)
I recommend The Picture of Dorian Gray, I wouldn't say the book was ‘good’ but I don't use that term very much these days, it was interesting... very worthwhile.

I suggest we read this book:

512KppPATeL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
It'll only take a few years, maybe a decade at most. Working together we might actually be able to understand some of it too.

Ok, ok, seriously though, what about No Exit? I'd been meaning to read it anyway.

Other recommendations: Cat's Cradle, Dune, Watchmen, the Foundation trilogy. They're all great.

yeah let's do this...

what do you all think about doing a club on goodreads.com? We can create polls for picking a book and also see what everyone else is reading besides the book club books (and there are more cool features too) I can set it up and organize it if anyone is interested...

a book club !:phear: sounds intrigueing -
Thought: It would be interesting to read books 'together' and discuss them afterwards.
(it would appear that was already mentioned:confused:)
I am mostly interested in philosophy and classical litterature.:)

^Gleh. The logistics of making an INTP forum book club are boggling. Herding cats.

I'll read anything though.

Sounds good to me. I like the idea of choosing a book by poll too. Perhaps those who are interested can nominate a book and then we can vote to see which one we read?

If we try.. and REALLY put our mind to it, perhaps it is even possible to form this book club.. though a lot more reasonable scenario is that we grab one of the INTJ's from this site and make him/her set up the club :p

Seems like a good idea to do it through a dedicated system like that, if for no other reason than the ease of set-up. Doing it entirely through the forum would likely require the creation of a new subforum, just to organise threads for discussion, book choosing, etc.

Not that that's a bad thing... In fact, keeping it all grounded on this site might make it more accessible & successful, just due to the visibility factor.
