Nicholas Cage is practically the best actor alive, probably also the most uneven. It's a shame people judge him by his lows, probably because you can barely see his highs up in the sky.

Protip:

Bad Liutenant
Wild at Heart
Leaving Las Vegas
Adaption

Are all top of the notch watches and he has a number of other films that are really good too.

Anyway horror..

If you really sit yo ass down and get into this (maybe smoke a small spliff or eat a brownie beforehand to open up your receptors without losing touch) it oughta be scary as fuck in a different way:

Eden Lake. You have to see this one. Saw it last night. A young couple, the woman is a teacher of young kids, decide to take an idyllic vacation in the woods by a beautiful lake. The trouble is there is a bunch of unruly teenagers around. The guy asks a teen if he would turn his boombox down, "Don't be a "#@&*", he says. The couple behave normally but makes the same kind of mistakes you and I would make (like the one in the previouos sentence) as far using good Fe goes. I don't know if you would classify this as a snuff film, but it's mighty close to it.

Hostel. Had a shot of famous clock in Prague Square. I was there. Not sure I want to return after this film.

I thought the prices were $5k, 10k, 25k. Why did that one guy pay 50k? I'm not in the market for that sort of thing. There was some vigilante goings on near the end. That was immoral, don't you think?

Going to have to leave a recommendation for Pontypool here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226681/

Radio crew broadcasts from within the station as the apocalypse plays out in the nearby town. Not perfect, but unusual and suspenseful. For once, watching/reading horror almost obsessively has led to something good.

I finally watched the original Psycho.

I can't say I was "scared," I've seen things far more shocking. (It was like when I saw North by Northwest finally, I thought the plane chase was boring; but apparently back when it released, it was a Big Deal.) But I was impressed by the look and feel, the framing, the tone Hitchcock was trying to create, etc.

I also thought Anthony Perkins was superb and had more modern acting sensibilities than most of the cast. His scene with Janet Leigh in the parlor with the stuffed birds actually was psychologically disturbing, due primarily to his acting and the camera work.

I'm not usually into snuff films, but I thought Hostel was intriguing (as well as disturbing)... I never felt the need to watch any of the others in the series.

I'm a bigger fan of Saw 1-7.

House of the Devil - Set in the 1980s but made in 2009 or so. It is a classic devil worshipping cult combined with being alone in a house type suspense horror. It is full of cliches but it does them well.

^^ Yeah, great pic -- a Ti West movie (he's done a few other things + the VHS series + a clip in ABCs of Death.) Not a super high-end budget, but effective and entertaining. Tom Noonan's in it as well, he's a great character actor.

The first Grave Encounters movie surprised me. It was a lot better than most horror films. I'm not sure why it's rated so poorly on imdb.

I had an opportunity to see the black and white 1941 The Wolfman in 35mm at the local theater. It was interesting. Lon Chaney Jr was good as the inept and kind of goosey hero as always. Worth a watch. I forget how those old films build slowly, have about 5 minutes of climax, and then end abruptly. It is always a bit of a shock like the movie version of an ice cream brain freeze.

I also broke down and watched The Innkeepers. Not bad, not great. The main two ghost hunting innkeepers feel very real despite the hokeyness of the plot and the twist ending.

Finally watched We Are What We Are. It had the hallmarks of a well done psychological horror: Moral ambiguity, long slow build of tension, and isolation.

The basic plot reads like a million other horrors. There is the misnthropic family unit on the outskirts of a small rural community. A bad storm hits cutting off the electricity and roads. However, none of that really matters. It's all for the sake of mood. Well, that and it provides the set up for some fantastic lines such as, "the damp gets into my head". The meat of the story unfolds progressively. It would have marched on to it's gory end regardless of the setting.

Watch it but don't watch it while eating. :ahh:

I felt the same way. Some people really liked it. What I enjoyed was the banter between the two leads, but the last part of the movie just wasn't that interesting to me.
