The recent SR debacle has raised awareness of the deep web, with news of tor and it's applications spreading rapidly. It would be quite interesting to find out more about this hidden part of the internet from those that have accessed it. Have anyone had interesting experiences, or found any noteworthy sites, while browsing the net's nether-regions?

It's pretty much a bunch of hacker IRC's, child porn, and drug trafficking. But I don't know first hand. I know a guy.

Nothing really noteworthy, unless you are trying to be part of one of the big hacker groups.

Basically what Lot said.

I've seen people post snippets from it on other boards.

There were screenshots from a website forum dedicated to, 'monstrous minds' - people would share stories about things they'd done. Torturing/molesting people etc.

I really don't know how much of it was fiction and how much non-fiction from some people who just get their kicks from reading/writing about that sort of thing (or if the screenshots were even real - though I don't have much reason to doubt they weren't) but it was pretty messed up to say the least.

To be honest, those sorts of things don't really interest me.

What about government leaks, revolutionary associations, etc.? I briefly browsed a few sites, with nothing noteworthy, but surely the anonomous nature of the system must hide some truly interesting applications.

That stuff is there, but it's not the main feature. People mostly use it for illegal activity. But I only know so much. So perhaps someone else on here might know more.

i'm a prize in a cereal box near you, so buy, BUY,
all aboard the necro train "toot tooooot"

anyway i actually have a bit of experience with not only tor but i2p and freenet (12p is ok, but freenet is made of suck, i prefer tor long live the onion), and the first thing you should know is that if you are going to start browsing the deep web you should spend about a week researching ways to keep yourself hidden while browsing tor and use tails.
https://tails.boum.org/

2nd stay away from the uncensored hidden wiki, the regular hidden wiki is fine but the difference is cp...so yeah. for the most part it is used for illegal activities such as drugs, arms, counterfeit money/identification, hackers for hire and hitmen. you can also find 4chan style imageboards, wikileaks (gotta love whistleblowers) and activist/hacktivist forums aren't difficult to find, and on top of all that you can browse the clearnet (regular web).

i would like to finish this spew with some advice

1. use completely different usernames/passwords for anything you decide to log into, in fact it's better to keep multiple accounts for the same site.
2. try not to let too many personal tendencies permeate all your accounts, this can include anything from catchphrases too the number of periods used in a pause....
3. if you decide to use any commercial services find one that is reputable, silk road is good for narcotics, though you can buy plenty of legal merchandise in some of the other markets.
4. that roundish thing attached to your neck...no above your neck..anyway it's there for a reason so use it....OH! i forgot right on the hidden wiki is a few links to some libraries filled with all kinds of good reading so have fun browsing

sorry for the spew btw, and if you have questions feel free to ask (i'll try to answer in a timely manner)

Yep, I used to finger that shit when I was a kid. I have some friends who are active in the internet-occult.

BBS, IRC, and Minecraft is representative of the natural evolution and emergence of this underground network. Nowadays you can end up in the nether by crafting a nether-portal.

You can go on IRC, and download hard to find documents and files that are not easily accessible on the internet. At the time, it was safer to download software or whatever from IRC than the internet because of viruses.

The anarchist cookbook was a popular document that circulated through these channels. It covered topics from hacking vending machines, to creating credit card readers from a VHS head. This was probably the most interesting part for me.

Basically, the cookbook would get passed around and users would add pages to it if they had something valuable to add. Because it was anarchy, each copy was different and the formatting changed between sections. I wonder if it's still floating around?

You can sit in an IRC room, and talk to a bible-bot. You can create custom functionality using the existing IRC protocols just as you can create custom game types in Minecraft.

Newsgroups are another way to download movies and software applications and it is safer that the P2P applications. They expire so it's only good for downloading pre-releases and new movies.

IRC is still the best place to find the goodies, however you have to know where to look. You have to get past gatekeepers, and know people to get into the real underbelly of the internet.

Bash.org is a website that is a fun read and is based on IRC chats between nerds.

Many WordPress websites are hacked by these same people so they can be used for whatever purpose, like a DOS attack. Websites are hosted with direct access to large back-bones so they are more useful than taking over personal computers with a trojan horse. They are operated directly via the IRC channels. You could technically create something with redstone circuits in Minecraft that could spread porn like viruses throughout the internet.

I can only imagine... "What does this switch do?"... Flick!

That was a thing that people did on IRC before. They would upload illegal and embarrassing shit to private computers via trojan horses as a joke. I'm sure that they could get some child-porn on personal computers of elected officials and end their careers. It's a strange and fucked up place and much of it is centralized on IRC. And it's just a chat protocol so it is dynamic.

When banks and grocery stores get hacked, sometimes it's just a warning message. Who knows, and the internet is nearly impossible to regulate so it's actually a beautiful thing. Net-neutrality at its finest!

Some people buy and sell identities and credit cards. You usually have to buy in bulk or learn how to steal them for yourself. I have no idea what they use them for but I guess it's something that you just have to get used to.

There's a bunch of websites that are operated by the similar groups of people. It's basically the red-light district of the internet.

It shows that anarchy does work and can be effective on the internet. I'm guessing that they are the same people who created anonymous. Who knows? I have been out of that circle for a long time so I wouldn't know anymore.

It would be quite interesting to find out more about this hidden part of the internet from those that have accessed it.

Honestly, it's only slightly interesting. If you are looking for something specific, IRC a good place to start. Otherwise, just stay the hell out because unless you know what you're doing; you may end up swimming in child porn and viruses.

What would you like to know about it?

There's certain parts of this site that can only be seen by members and places where only the mods can go but that privacy exists for a reason, we don't want everything we talk about to be searchable on Google and the mods need their own space to confer on current issues. If you go searching for the "deep web" out of morbid interest you're an idiot, people who sell illicit goods and services don't advertise they socialise, they're not interested in time wasters they're looking for clients and connections, if you're neither of those things then for all they know you're a fucking cop.

What everyone else said.

And it's a shame too because I think it is essential that people have a means to communicate anonymously and privately without risk. But, its predominant use as a means for illegal or generally horrendous activity is certainly a strong argument for its elimination.

There is an understandable allure in seeking out secret things, especially if you are one to romanticize "outlaw" behavior. However, unless you are somehow among its primary demographic, it's best to avoid deep/dark web.

I probably have my copy of the Poor Man's James Bond floating around somewhere. It's not quite the same since someone basically took one of those "compiled on the fly" swapbooks and actually published it (as cheap as possible -- it was like newspaper pages); but it still had a pretty cobbled together appearance and various tidbits of information on a wide range of anarchist topics.
