It’s Summer again. The time of the year where there’s no school, less work, and weather so nice you can wander outside for hours.
I hate it. It’s a bit of a paradox really seeing as school makes me miserable and I can just about strangle everyone there. That being said, it’s something to do. I feel so useless this time of year with no friends nearby and a family I seriously don’t need to see all day for weeks at a time.
This thread was more of me venting than anything but what are your thoughts on Summer, how do you survive, and what do you recommend someone do to actually enjoy it?
Also, i never wrote an introduction so Yo, whats crackenin' bitches!:)

I have had the same feeling many a time. Though I haven't actually said this to anyone, this is part of why I chose to take a class from May to June this summer (classes start again in late August). I told people it was so I could graduate sooner (which might or might not actually happen) but it's really just so I wouldn't go into a spiraling depression from sheer boredom like I have the last few years.

I totally understand that, I had Summer school last year and was amazed when I thoroughly enjoyed it. It kept me in touch with reality those 2 months while also giving a good amount of time off. None this year though, which is unfortunate since i need some of those grades to graduate, so i probably wont finish highschool on time.:(

I simply walked around my town and enjoyed not having to do anything. It's like being an adult early. (without the responsibilities)

I either love or hate summer. If I have a good amount of friends to spend it with, plenty of exploration, solitary walks with camera in hand, a job I can stand, and perhaps a class or two at the community college, it would be a perfect summer.

Yeah, I think I'll have a good summer if I get the job I'm hoping for and if I get all the money I need for college expenses (a MacBook, personal expenses, books, computer tablet, fees, and who knows what else).

Well, I'm glad other people can enjoy it. It's really just the length that gets to me. For instance, i love Winter Break. Those two weeks of solitude are really refreshing that time of year. It's really a shame to since i live in Chicago(meaning half a mile away from the border), but the train downtown is just to far to walk to. Oh well, I'm assuming it will get better next year when I have a liscenes.

True. I would have much rathered school year long, just having breaks often.

I agree. Lots of shorter breaks (albeit maybe a little longer than winter break...maybe 3 weeks? A month tops) would be much nicer than the giant summer break. I also think summer break is responsible for letting us forget a lot of important information, which means we have to re-learn it, which means we lose overall learning efficiency.

Admittedly, though, having just 3 weeks to a month in the summer for minors to be on vacation could be very straining on resorts, since so many families would be flooding them in those time intervals. The breaks would probably have to be staggered (as in, staggered between individual counties, if not individual schools) to lessen this effect.

One way to do it, imo:
Add 2 weeks to spring break (making it 3 weeks).
Add a week to winter break (making it 3 weeks).
This leaves 7 weeks of summer, roughly, to be distributed evenly.

Assume spring break is now weeks, 2, 3, and 4 of March, while winter break is weeks 2, 3, and 4 of December.

Now put in a 3 week break in July.

One 2 week break in May.

One 2 week break in September.

Would be awesome.

Indeed. I doubt that big of a change could actually happen, though. =(

Believe it or not there is a system very similar to that already being implemented in certain American schools. I think they get rid of 2 day weekends, but basically you have 2 weeks with school and then 2 weeks off, with certaint holidays off ofcourse. That seems like a great system to me since children forget so much more over a 6 week period, and without weekends very few lesson would ever be interrupted.

.. No week-ends? What, school all seven days?
o.0

Other than that, year round school would be awesome. Although I made a friend, started fencing lessons, and signed up for summer school, so I should be okay this year.

Wait, you guys actually complain about not having to do homework and stuff? :D:D
That being said, in Germany in university there are two semesters per year. In between there are breaks/holidays (although officially not holiday but semester without lectures/classes). The summer break is about 3 months, and the winter (in february/march) 1 to 1.5. It changes a bit each year.
In school it was similar, with the difference that in total there was less class-free time.

Too much pollen, too bright, too hot. Other than lots of time, vacation, road trips, summer flames, and other things, I would prefer if there were only two seasons: fall and winter.

If there was one season: winter.

I need to move somewhere cold :(

I love the summer. There's a huge field beside the forest close to my home where I usually go for a walk during the sunset. Most of you probably see the sunset as nothing more than a normal daily occurrence, but to me, it sometimes feels almost surreal. The sky behind me is dark blue and filled with stars, above it's a clear deep blue, and on the horizon I can see an orange glow. I've always been deeply fascinated by space, and looking at the sky that time of the day just fills me with awe.

Same her, often times I just lay there at night and watch the moon as it slowly yet surely makes its way from one end of my window to the other. It's such a simple, explanable thing, yet fascinating and new every time.

It often feels surreal to me too, even if it is just a normal occurrence. I love the sunrise in the morning too, although I'm rarely awake when it happens. I wish that in-between time of the day lasted for a few hours each day.

I have a love-hate relationship with summer. We only get about 10 days of true sunshine in Ireland every year and so if I don't go outside and bask in the sun I feel guilty about wasting such a beautiful day.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
^It's sunny now, of course. The Leaving Cert started today, and there's nothing like a hot, stuffy exam hall to analyse Irish poetry in. :( Then for the rest of the summer, it will rain. Just like the rest of the year.

The sun stays up here too long too. It doesn't get dark until about 11pm and dawn's at 5. I like the nighttime; I'd rather the days didn't last so long. I don't mind the heat, though: I used to live in the US. It was worse there. I laugh at my friends when they complain about the heat: it's only 80/25 degrees!

15-20°C? Were lucky if we get down to 22°C overnight. Supposed to get to 34°C today with 80+% humidity and that's cooler than many summer days.

And I gotta mow the freaking lawn sometime
