Gameplay was too much like WoW with lightsabers for the story-lines to entertain me. It felt pretty much no different to when I levelled another WoW toon. The vibe I got from it was basically:
- if you like WoW, may as well play WoW
- if you don't like WoW and aren't into Star Wars, you won't like SW:TOR
- if you like WoW and aren't into Star Wars, may as well play WoW
- if you don't like WoW but you're into Star Wars, you'll get some enjoyment out of playing the story-lines
- if you like WoW and you're into Star Wars, you'll enjoy the game and probably play it regularly
To me, there was some enjoyment to be gained out of it since I like Star Wars. But I'm not a huge fan or anything, I was more interested in the game play. It really wasn't what I was hoping for (a better version of WoW Arena) so I didn't stay very long.
I think if the game was radically different to WoW (for good or ill) it would have been more successful. I know I would have enjoyed it much more if it didn't feel so stale (Collect X amount of Y item. Find A, then go from B to C to claim your reward etc) and I would have played the story modes a lot longer if the gameplay was something fresh and enjoyable.
It also probably would have drawn in a lot more of the anti-WoW crowd, and perhaps even more of the WoW crowd who were so busy drawing comparisons like, 'this game tries to be like WoW, but it sucks at it. What a try hard game.' (A bit of an exaggeration, but I actually sort of agree).
