this is a complete stab in the dark and may be completely unrelated to INTP or anything really, it could just be me singing about what's happening and nothing more buuuut.........

i often find myself in the middle of something, usually when my mind isn't extremely engaged, and i'll be singing to a tune that i heard eariler in the day or something that's just in my head but the words will be about what i'm doing or what's on my mind, i'm not putting effort in to it or anything, and then people notice and make comments and give me weird looks but i don't feel like it's that strange, and then i stop anyway.. until my mind next wanders and i start again without realising

sorry for my writing style and vagueness

I catch myself doing this too. Not to the extent that people stare (mostly because it tends to happen at home & my roommate is of the same vein). If a pattern exists, I'd say it is most likely to happen when I'm in a good mood or when I'm doing kinesthetic memory tasks (mopping floors, dusting and the like). Of course I tend to sing or hum whatever song is stuck in my head, but I do notice that at times I'll sing something with an analogous theme to what is happening, or what I'm thinking. I suppose it is a good way to find out whatever is going on in there at a particular moment.

I doubt it has much to do with type....I know a lot of different people who do this.

P.S. Nice avatar.

P.P.S. I'm excited that I got to use the word "Analogous", it has been in my head for days.:)

I do that. I also sing songs appropriate to the situation, occasionally for comic effect but mostly it's just habit. Most frequently I break into Elton John's Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word ("It's sad, so sad, it's a sad sad situation [..]") and "Oh hot damn, this is my jam" when I'm spreading my toast in the morning.
Jam = jelly.

I mouth the words to lyrics of songs I'm listening to.

yeah i do a similar thing with Total Eclipse of the Heart (when i say i need someone to do something i often break into the "and i need you now tonight, and i need you more than ever...")

i think it might be just a general Ne thing maybe..

Total Eclipse of the Heart is particularly insidious. One can never know when it will strike or from which direction. It is gleefully ridiculous, obnoxious and catchy, which is why I keep it in my arsenal. :elephant:

^^I do that a lot, but I have a friend who does it ALL THE TIME^^... I think a nervous habit or to entertain the people with whom he is speaking. He will also continue on the singing with subsequent dancing and go completely off topic from where we started (God forbid you end a question with a lyrical reference somehow!)

I wonder if, in general, INTP's have a greater musical inclination? I find music and the like (humming, beats, pentameter, patterns and sequence, determining instruments used ) are something of which I am constantly taking note. I used to play piano, so that could be part of it, but I find it very hard to get along in my day without music. At work I had to buy speakers to connect to my iPod because I couldn't work without the music. When I try, it's like I become totally ADD (attention Deficit Disorder) and can't focus on my work.

As annoying as it is for people to have music "stuck in their head", for me, it's usually because i'm currently in love with that song. I can listen to one song 40 times in a row and find something new each time.

Oh! To respond to what you said @samjonathan, my boyfriend does that sometimes but usually in the flow of a conversation with me and since his musical tastes and interests are so far-reaching, he could be singing to the tune of a particular song when he does it and I'm just not aware. He's INFJ, though. :)
