I think it was back in the 80s that these audio recordings came out. It started when this guy in San Francisco called the police to complain about his neighbors who were arguing all the time. The police said they couldn't do anything without evidence, so they told him to record their arguments. He did, and the rest is history.

I watched the documentary about this last year. It was interesting in a way, especially when they got into the relationships between the people involved.
