I have seen a portion of individuals on this forum who highly value self expression in their speech. By this I do not mean the practical content of what they are saying but of the way they choose to say it.

I have combined multiple questions in one sentence below. Perhaps, I am expressing my need for efficiency or perhaps, if it is difficult to understand, one could presume I have an affinity for laziness. ;)

How much and when is communication a priority over self expression or vise versa?

Communication implies an "other." It may desire a timely response or just sit there for contemplation. Self-expression is communication with oneself.

This "other" may be to a specific person, to a group, to some hopeful, or to the wind/God/fate/ancestors as in a cry of anguish.

Self expression is a form of communication. What is being communicated is not so readily apparent.

i.e. What does a painting say?

Whenever communication is of my own initiative (such as in this forum o.o), it tends to be self-expression. This is probably because it feels more meaningful to me if something of my Self is placed into it. It's also a subtle attempt to connect with others, I suspect.

Informative posts are also something I can do, if I happen to have concrete knowledge, but in a lot of cases what I have left to communicate is a sort of philosophical or abstract way of interpreting the world -- and this is best done when coated with my 'spirit' ...i think. My essence is in my words, in a lot of ways.

edit: wait, you said speech...
Ums, I don't do well in inserting my Self in verbal communication, no matter how I try it is as if there's a veil to my words, or something muffling their sound.
My speech feels like a bastardization of my thoughts. I dislike speaking altogether and have often considered taking a vow of silence and just learning sign language instead.

This way, I can avoid awkward social moments with a 'legitimate' excuse (they'll assume i'm mute when i reply with signs) and everyone will generally leave me alone; so no small talk. No having to fake interest. No having to conjure up something to fill the dead space. I'll just let it simmer... and let silence occur when it should. Perhaps I might inspire more introspection in those around me as well as in myself.

Communication is self-expression. Communication conveys ideas. Words capture ideas. Therefore, the words that I use are an integral, and the most important, part of the idea I am trying to convey.

The way I choose to say something in inseparable from what I am saying.

So, I guess you could say my whole idea of communication is self-expression. I don't perceive a difference between the two.

Exactly! And I'll add that given any number of ways of saying something (different words, arrangement etc...), it's self expression to choose. I've noticed everyone has a style as well. Mine frequently happens to be 'passionate' in that I want to convey the depth of my emotions when it comes to topics and move others.

Yeah..!
And I do have a distinct sense of your writing style. I can usually pick it apart from others. To me it feels like it has a tinge of assertiveness in it, as well as sincerity and surety.

For some members I don't have a good sense of their "voice", per se. They merge together in my mind as the collective, anonymous voice of the forum. I also find them less relateable due to this... c.c It's not that I want it that way, but it just happens. I also think members have different degrees of expressiveness because they have different uses for this forum - and each use births a different level or type of investment.

For some this forum is a source of casual, social-media-esque interaction. For others it's a place to find and convey minds. For a few, to find and convey hearts. For others it's an amusing source of distraction and procrastination ^^, etc.. Or a combination of things.

@Auburn

So were do you make self expression a priority and communication, in a way that is easier for others to read, a priority?
