I have been working pretty hard for about a year, then I ran into a series of unfortunate events. End result, I was feeling pretty negative and I stopped working for about 6 months. Now I'm feeling a lot better, and I've been working pretty hard so I have a bunch of money coming in again.

I was all excited so I started making a list of all the things that I wanted to buy for myself...

1. Part to fix my printer
2. Replacement part for electric shaver
3. Workout gloves
4. Camel pack

Pretty damn disappointing...

There are books that I want, but I still have a bunch to read before I need more. I have hobbies, and interests but already have what I need for them. I want to get into drone racing but I don't know anyone else who would get into it with me.

What should I do? I really want to want things...

There's always erotic asphyxiation, if you haven't tried that.

I always wanted a friend.
Maybe we could meet up.
I would do drone racing with you.

Clowns are fun to hire.
Paying them to wash my dishes or water my plants is one of the greatest joys in my life.

You can be happy as well.

Buy a house if you don't have one. If you do, turn your back yard into a green house. Then start a collection of what ever plants you want. Get rare exotic ones.

Or maybe instruments and music. Good hobby that sucks up your money nicely.

A luxury car would be nice.

Higher a midget to follow you around and narrate your life, from the perspective of a nature documentary.

Or be happy you don't need things.

Maybe an exoskeleton and become a super hero.

I do enjoy gardening. I've never thought about collecting exotic plants. This could be interesting. Thanks for the idea!

I've tried but couldn't really get into it. I don't have that kind of talent. :(

A luxury car would be nice.

Have one, and getting one as a bonus. Not really exciting. I don't like being looked at and I'm more interested in a comfortable ride. I work from home so I don't drive often.

Mmmm.... No thanks.

Or be happy you don't need things.

I am, but I'm worried that I won't work if I have no motivation to work. I need to want things, or money has no value.

Start up a charity. Start using $ as social leverage to alleviate some of the ills of the world.

I'm not rich! I just have some extra money coming in. I planned it out so that I can pay off my debt over the next 6 months.

I used to give away all of my extra money and belongings. My family is pretty poor and charity starts at home...

Also, starting a charity sounds like a lot of work. I would rather work less, and have what I need. Working more is not an option.

I was thinking along the lines of something selfish.

Personally if I had the extra cash, I'd plan a trip to some mountain and hike a bit. Or buying some snorkeling gear and going to the sea might not be bad. Depends on where you live though, I guess.

If you are happy everything is fine, don't let marketing fool you into higher consumption levels. If you are not happy, you need a recharge. I hope you know what recharges your spirit.

I'm not wanting anything either and I'm happy.

Stop a moment, step to one side, reconsider: Not needing to buy things is freedom, is it not?

All material things are anchors of varying weight and type.

Save. Invest. Retire early.

Not only will this goal motivate you to work long enough to reach it (probably at least 8 years unless you've got a really high paying job, or super low expenses--by then you'll probably be bored if not hating work)...then once you do reach it you have the added bonus of never needing to work again.

Most people are slaves to their wants. So you're already a step ahead.

Yes, you are totally right. However, if I don't want anything, then how do I stay motivated to continue making money?

Personally if I had the extra cash, I'd plan a trip to some mountain and hike a bit. Or buying some snorkeling gear and going to the sea might not be bad. Depends on where you live though, I guess.

I live in an area where the beach, mountains, desert, hiking, and everything is near by. It's all pretty cheap (just gas and food). Plus I know people who plan trips and have cabins, toys, and trailers so I don't really need to pay for that.

If you are happy everything is fine, don't let marketing fool you into higher consumption levels. If you are not happy, you need a recharge. I hope you know what recharges your spirit.

I recharged over the last 6 months. Haha! I'm feeling really good and everything is going the direction that I want. I'm happy to hear others have the same feeling of not wanting things.

I designed my business to generate monthly revenue with very minimal work. I hit a wall because I was funding with contract work, and I had some shiesty crooked clients. My business has been fine and in high demand, low overhead, and because of the shiesters I was stuck and unable to launch fully. But I fired my clients and now everything is fine.

I guess I could retire today and be fine. I'm not sure that is a good idea. I tried to keep my business small so I'm not burdened by it. I know people who chase the almighty dollar and end up working all of the time. That's definitely now what I want.

Everything is aligned to pay off all of my debt in the next 6 months or so. Then I will have enough income to pay all of my bills moving forward. I have a dozen other products that I don't even sell, and I'm not marketing my existing ones. I don't really see a point in making more money than I need though.

What kind of products?

You're going to get bored...

I'm going to predict that you'll wind up back in college in a completely different field within the next decade, and I don't even know you, just maybe someone like you. :D (A former astrophysicist who is now in a forest ecology doctoral program)

One of my plans if I ever get rich is spend the rest of my life in collage, just moving from program to program, maybe work a year after each education.

Oh, an astrophysicist! That's really cool!

I started in computer science but I was way ahead of everyone else. Then went to operations management and enjoyed that, it's very useful in the work that I do.

I would like to study psychology, and physics but I couldn't find a psychology program that didn't require practicing. I don't want the degree or the liability.

I plan on going back to college. I really enjoyed community college, but disliked going to a University. Honestly, I think that there are way more effective ways to learn things than attending a college. I would be going for the experience, and not so much the education.

Write a movie about a sad mute schizophrenic clown that goes through his everyday life giving happiness and joy to other people, while not finding it himself. Throw in Mel Gibson in the lead role; Joe Pesci could be his supporting clown friend (whom exists in his mind) that makes fun of his ego. He could turn to drugs and alcohol and spiral into a hilarious clown suicide where he thinks he's getting strangled by his balloon animals. Turn it into a dark, but funny satire - the saddest comedy ever. Critics will disagree on whether certain parts were funny or sad. You'll be a movie genius. :)

This actually isn't a problem, so don't feel bad. I feel the same way.
The amount of things I want I can count on one hand.

1. Ultimate companion wife that is also Hot (check. we're engaged)
2. SRT Viper (in a few weeks)
3. Downtown apartment (not long after the Viper)
4. Travel the World (I've been to seven countries in the last 12 months)
5. Dream Career (Already have it. I study physics, write the book series I want to write, and training myself to become a good investor. I've traded small stocks and have a big idea for an invention.)

For me, that's literally it. All I think about in terms of 'stuff' (the wife isn't stuff :D)

Do not be disappointed. You don't have to want lots of material things to be happy or find purpose. The one thing I would tell anyone is to work on being yourself to the max. There has to be something you feel like you're made for and you doing it would be like your fingerprint on the world. It could be one thing, or a combination of a few major things.

Do that. Desire for objects comes and goes for the most part.
