Playing hardcore mode for the first time, and down to my last two colonists (and pet dog named Deadly). One of the colonists was digging a room into a mountain, and I neglected to count how wide I was making it, which led to a roof collapse and the colonist being crushed to death.
Instantly, on the other side of the map, the dog bonded to him had a mental break, and flew into a berserk rage, somehow sensing his master's untimely demise from across the world.
Deadly the dog attacked the final remaining colonist; a pacifist doctor (named Doc). Unable to fight back and unable to escape, Doc was quickly incapacitated. Several hours later, the doctor was still lying helpless on the floor, until eventually the dog's berserk rage came to an end and it was kind enough to carry her back to a medical bed.
I was hoping that a new colonist would arrive and be able to patch up the doctor, but deep down I knew that was never going to happen. The doctor was bleeding out fast, and I knew she wasn't long for this world. Seconds before she died, a notification popped up.
"Deadly and Doc have formed a bond."

And that is why you need to play this game.

I have this terrible habit of taking too many prisoners and trying to make colonists out of all of them, until I end up with too many mouths to feed, most of which don't have any useful skills.

It's a world on the galactic rim, not anything to do with a rim job.

*googles rim job because I'm not sure what that is*

OH KAY now I know :phear:

The number one way I lose colonies is friendly fire, the algorithm that works out who gets hit seems to favor whoever is closest with complete disregard for who the shooter is shooting at.

I just lost a colony with two riflemen and a sniper (none of whom hit a damn thing, at varying ranges) who were annihilated by their allies when they tried to retreat into the base, because the enemy was behind them, and those same allies were then annihilated themselves when the enemy rushed through the choke point with hardly a scratch.

I don't think friendly fire shouldn't happen, if I tell one guy to fire at a raider in melee combat with another colonist I'm intentionally gambling that colonist's life, if I fucked up then I fucked up; I shouldn't have to juggle commands to get my guys to hold their fire and their position to prevent them randomly slaughtering each other or rushing into the kill zone to clean up a blood stain.

Since the alpha 15 update friendly fire hasn't been an issue, sweet vindication.

I lost my latest colony to a scheme in which I tried to make a Thrumbo and Mechanoid hive fight each other, they teamed up instead, it was a magnificent disaster.

Why is this game 2d though?

It's a dwarf fortress clone and it trades a whole dimension for simplified UI and pixel graphics.

I kind of gave up after my steel walls caught fire which was amusing but then I realised the whole map will burn down.

Wood floors don't burn anymore, which messed up some of my plans.

I didn't know steel walls were flammable, I only use wood at first then everything's made of stone, making walls out of steel seems like a waste of a valuable commodity.

It's still in alpha, maybe layered maps will come later.

Pretty neat game but a lot of rough edges that keep getting my colonists killed.
So mechanoids only hate you and all your owned animals, but not Thrumbos?
Could be entertaining if mechanoids just attempt to murder everything in sight, and more consistent. Then all we'd need is an explanation for raiders to risk their lives other than to maybe kidnap a colonist or something.

This game is one of my favorites ever. Was playing obsessively for the past couple months.
