I just finished dan browns inferno, and I have to tell you that it took freaking long. Nowadays I seem to have a problem with reading books- they just don't hold my attention. I don't know why, tho I'm hoping I'm only going trough a phase where books that I previously loved now seem boring. Maybe I just need books from another genre. Thus I wanted to know if you could recommend me different books so maybe I could find myself again. There is only one thing I ask, keep it light. I am still in shock from the stuff I had to read for uni, and my little brain is exhausted.:storks:

A book can be engaging from page to page but people who can write like that are few and far between, kind of like well directed movies, in the movie Kill Bill (the second one I think) there's a scene where she gets buried, then it goes to her being trained in martial arts, then the scene after she has already escaped but it isn't explained how, I think it's in the next scene that we go back to how she punched her way out (it's a camp action movie). This is done to inform the audience but also keep them distracted so they can't put plot points together fast enough to predict what will happen next, and that's really hard to do.

I enjoy books by Matthew Reilly for this quality, the characters are mostly military so their personalities aren't deep, some speculative science fiction is there but not enough to wow for long, the real appeal of his writing style is how events never stop happening, it's go go go from the first page to the last, which sounds simple but keeping up momentum like that is incredibly difficult.

I'm a fan of Heinlein, with Starship Troopers being my favorite book of all time. I've gotta tell you, though, I kind of fell out of reading. I just... can't seem to get into books, any more. I think my decline started when I read the full Amber collection. The original five books were alright, but then the other five happened, and then I just got tired of reading. I also don't have much time to read, though, so having to stop after every page get's irritating. Also, nothing I read seems original enough, and I have a hard time identifying with characters who seem to exist exclusively to fill some role the plot calls for. I dunno.

Now that Sci-Fi has been recommended, I suppose I'll add to that with Ender's Game. If you decide you want something more complex, Dune or Foundation. If you want short stories, try "Tales from the Spaceport Bar." There are some very good stories in it, but I don't know if it is still in print.

Just a small word of warning for Hayyel, Dune isn't light at all.

For fantasy, I'd possibly suggest The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. It's engaging, witty and doesn't get bogged down in pages of description (like say, Lord of the Rings).

That's why I said she should read it if she's in the mood for something complex. It's not exactly dark, but it is heavy.

The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov is enjoyable and only has 288 pages.

I prefer to read novellas or short stories if my brain is too exhausted. If you're up for some mild horror (they were much scarier during the 1900's), you could read the works of Lovecraft. They're mostly public domain so you could read them over the net.

Have you read On the Road, that was a very fast read for me there was only one point where it was a drag.

There was a book i found in a bargain bin called Death's Arms by Jeter that was sci fi and a very quick read.

Any of the first series of Dragon Lance are light and fun. fluff books but they may get you back in the swing of it.

If you just accept was is happening is super strange The crying of lot 49 is good.
Conspiracy of Dunces is weird and fun like that.

I know how you feel, I used to be an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy, but recently I've just gotten bored with it. I have a huge pile of books I want to get through, and an even bigger pile of books I don't have yet, but when I try to just sit down and read I lose interest within a chapter or two. The Picture of Dorian Gray kept my interest long enough to finish it, so I may just be at a phase where I'm burned out on the genre, you could have the same thing.

I have this site bookmarked but I keep forgetting about it.

As for recommendations:
Snow Crash
The Black Company; Still one of my top series, even if the latter titles get a bit absurd.
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Picture of Dorian Gray

Top Bottom
