Does anyone have or thinks they have a superego?

In the sense that they can notice its habitation within themselves and notice decisions that don't reflect their normal manner of behavior?

I understand this could be a bit Freudian but I am rather talking about some personality characteristics that are less preferred and less used but seem to increasingly interrupt normal flow of interests and way of life.

Sort of like Hulk and Green Goblin.

That's all I am going to say because I know there will be variants if people do experience this.

It's just that I had dreams and I remembered I had this fantasy/insight of an alternate dark personality.

I think it should be fairly common given that it's common in movies.

i have of course also seen the shadow in dreams. that's what dreams do. it's rare though to have that very direct experience of: wow, this is the main guy, behind all the other masks that he usually shows up with.

it's like the difference of getting a voice mail from your enemy and having him come fly through the window, feet forward, armed with a machine gun. and you know, this isn't just a dream, because this is actually you. this guy is the other half of what defines your life, during waking state consciousness. you can't escape him by waking up, because he will only succeed in possessing your body, when you do. meeting him is a chance of negotiating boundaries, not seeing him means his secret reign remains unchallenged.

the concept of super ego may be closely related, but it's so much of an analytical concept, that i wouldn't use it when exploring the experience of the shadow. shadow is a more experiential concept. super ego can be used, when reflecting analytically. you will have an assumption of what it's about. this is certain to prevent you from meeting the shadow face on. you may perhaps print out one of his voice mails, when using conceptual analysis.

just stumbled upon this, should probably read it. i hate long articles, especially with clumsy fonts. perhaps someone can read it for me ;)

Things get dramatically more complicated when you've been in a relationship with the same person for a few decades. I can tell when my wife's animus or shadow is looking for a fight with me. (By which, I mean, I know that it's not "her" that's being pissy, or whatever, with me.) And, she's gotten pretty good at knowing when to disengage when my anima is itching for a cat fight or my shadow climbs out of his cave.

So, yeah, I know what you're talking about. If you pay attention, you'll get to know those "characters" and maybe, if you're lucky, you'll even develop a relationship with them.

It's less a second self than a second attitude. Whichever is dominant seems to correlate reliably with my level of arousal.

I think you are spot on for what I am experiencing or noticing. Seems like Jung has tread and understood this idea well enough to distinguish some types.

I could not complete that article but I managed to find that wiki link.

But there seems to be no guide on it.

I guess it's Fight Club-ish?

Article is interesting, got about half way through. Don't really know what to make of it as of yet, although it seems that the concepts proposed within it are accurate based on my own personal observations and thoughts on the matter.

Shit. I would like to take my superego out back behind the chemical sheds and shoot it repeatedly until it dies Dies DIES!!!

It is a Nazi.
It is a dictator.
It is a control-freak.
It is one of the most disparaging things I have to deal with daily.

And a sign of its success and control is that I even feel a bit guilty for saying as much.

But honestly, I wish the damned thing did not exist.

I understand this could be a bit Freudian but I am rather talking about some personality characteristics that are less preferred and less used but seem to increasingly interrupt normal flow of interests and way of life.

Oh. You mean the Shadow.

Yes, I have one of those too, but she's far more palatable.

The Superego is never happy.
The Shadow just wants to say, "Hey, what about this?" and does something freaky and slightly uncomfortable, but always amusing and giving me an alternate perspective.

I think my Shadow has been increasingly more powerful and has overpowered ego and superego, if that makes sense.

I don't think it even makes suggestions anymore. I think it's Id + Shadow or something.

I mean I have aspirations and desires that don't make sense and are absolutely ridiculous. I don't know why I have them.
