Lately, I've been wondering and probably ambivalent generally, about whether or not I should or need to reivent myself. I could just be bored...I really enjoy being a tax attorney but have an attraction to science. I may be a bit old to go to medical school. Perhaps I could just take a course now and then.

Thoughts and/or insight?

What's wrong with who you are now and what you do now?

Intellectuals should plain avoid institutions and people who want to use them for their brains.

What ends up happening is you're drawn in to the abstractions and theories of the profession, and then they foist minutiae on you until your burnt out or altered to suit their scene. They drain you (basically) and fry your brain and immune system for their own ends. Sounds dramatic, but that's the reality, or at least my perception of it.

Essentially, what I'm saying is there should be some altruistic aim coupled with a thirst for information if you decide to go to medical school because you have to wade through shit before you have a modicum of autonomy. Man, that's biased...anyway, academia can be a cold place.

What I would do in your case is keep my career and limit my hours, granted you have the economic means to do so. Well, I guess my main question is what's motivating this reinvention or switch in careers?

The economy is probably affecting me(as well as boredom). I really enjoy my profession. It's intellectually stimulating but I really want more work right now. I'm also trying to launch into academia as an adjunct professor of tax law.

You are welcome to look around at no real danger to you. And I've never met an old horse that didn't train just as good as the young one-sometimes they're easier 'cause they have maturity on their side.
But honestly I'm suprized. You have talked about how much you lave being a tax attorney that I have been thinking about finding some more people to talk to about it. I've actually been meaning to catch you and ask you more. I've just been real busy with the good weather and all the horses needing ridden so I've been missing everybody. You're never too old to learn something new.

P.S. When you get the time PM me about the Tax Attorney profession. I really am interested.:)

Thanks. The economy has affected the legal profession; law firms have closed within the past two years or so and there've been numerous lay offs. I really do enjoy it.

Work halftime for a while or whatever and just visit whatever presentations you want to in a college of your choice. You won't get a degree, but that's not the point anyway, is it?
As soon as you get bored with doing that or need more money you can go back to being a full-time tax attorney.
