I don't understand how adding an E instead of an I to NTP can result in a personality that is ABSOLUTELY NUTS! but is somehow does.
!!!

Please define what you mean by "absolutely nuts", I'm trying to write fiction with a ENTP character so any definition you could give would be much appreciated.

Well let's think about the differences for a second.

INTP
Dominant Introverted Thinking
Auxiliary Extraverted Intuition
Tertiary E/I Sensing
Inferior Extraverted Feeling

ENTP
Dominant Extraverted Intuition
Auxiliary Introverted Thinking
Tertiary E/I Feeling
Inferior Introverted Sensing

Our area of confidence is our ability to process information that we take in and make clear objective decisions. ENTPs use that same function, but as their area of creativity instead. Where we take some information and do massive amounts of analysis, they take massive amounts of information and do some analysis. It gives direction to their ideas. The observe more of the world, but I believe we realize more about what we observe.

Our auxiliary extraverted intuition is our area of creativity. We have to see the patterns to do our analysis and we enjoy finding patterns, but an ENTP sees all the patterns, not just in their area of interest. If you want ideas, they are the ones you want because they will see more of the unique perspectives than anyone else.

Extraverted feeling is our achilles heel, being something we have trouble controlling, that can control us, but ENTPs don't have that trouble. It isn't one of their primary strengths, but they're likely to find things like small talk to be a reasonable diversion.

Introverted Sensing is where it can get interesting for an ENTP. Just like how we can be the ultimate non-emotional people but fall prey to our feeling and lose control, ENTPs are masters of fighting the status quo, but find themselves suffering defeat at the hands of their inferior introverted sensing, that strongly desires that structure and authority.

I just put that together, so it might not all be right, but I think it draws the comparisons pretty well. One letter can make an awful lot of difference.

Please define what you mean by "absolutely nuts", I'm trying to write fiction with a ENTP character so any definition you could give would be much appreciated.

I have got to say something here Cognisant - even though this will probably give you all sorts of prejudices about me:(. My daughter is an ENTP as was my father. One word sums them both up - rebel. My daughter started to rebel at 13 - my dad ran away from home at 15. My daughter had tried everything there was to try by 15. That's it - she's done it all. I have collected her unconscious from hospital after she had consumed copious amounts of alcohol; I have been asked to come and pick her up from a shop where she was caught shop-lifting. She has been expelled from one school and nearly expelled from her current one. She has tried all sorts of drugs. Yes, she has had sex.

You may say that this is down to bad parenting - maybe, but my son is a dream. I tried to reason with her - useless - and ended up trying to control her self destructive behaviour by grounding her, off and on, for almost a year. I don't feel I have been a bad parent - she has always been rebellious since she was young. I can tell other stories of when she was 2 and 7 and 11. My father was exactly the same - in trouble constantly as a young man, a shop steward/trade unionist rebelling against the system. Totally selfish - actually - no thought for how it affects those around them. For them their greatest urge is to not be seen to be conventional or conformist in any way. This is an obsession which leads to unhappiness for them - sometimes they will do the opposite of what they know they should do simply through fear of being seen to conform.

My daughter has started to calm down now - the India trip did her a world of good. We're now good friends (I hate having to control anyone). Besides what's left to do? She's fiercely intelligent - awesomely so - and I'm sure she will do extremely well in life. I just don't envy her husband:eek:

Btw - I am not saying that all ENTP's are like this but a lot of the ones I know, have these deeply independent streaks of rebelliousness in them and, what I envy, have the ability to turn this rebelliousness into fun - for themselves and everyone around them who get caught up in the whirlwind.

My husband the ENTP was a rebel from hell when he was a kid. In the second grade he decided to run away from school. His grandpa was a one man crime wave and his dad followed in his footsteps but I have no idea what MBTI personality they were. Both were moonshiners who never got cought because they sold their stuff to the cops and the local judge. Each generation gradually got more civilized and my son who, like his dad, also seems to be an ENTP, is quite an independant rebel. We reward his responsibility with the thing he craves the most..independance.

Decaff I like your explanation about ENTP's. It explains a lot of things.

Here is an observation of ENTP behavior. Everyone seems to have a "govener" of sorts in their mind who is responsible for what comes out of thier mouths and of what they think. In NTP types this govener does have a lot of governing power. I believe we are all familiar on how free we are to jump from one twisted convoluted thought to another. The governer, for the most part, does not concern himself with things like this and is not usuall troubled by it either. He is not overly concerned about implications of said words on others feelings (or on society in general) and the sensing function does not easily pick up on any mestakes nor on weather said word was appropriate to begin with.
Now with that said their is only one letter left in the 4 letter code that could act as a govener's helper and that is the E or the I function. I's are naturally more quiet about what they say in public, the E's? Well that is another story. The only govener I have seen in an ENTP is a desire to not piss off too many people and thus isolate themselves and not be able to use their E function.

This being said can I relate a funny story. Cog. perhaps this may help with your fiction.
There are some people who have an opposite reaction to certain medications. My husband (lets give him the name Oat) had an opposite reaction to a muscle relaxer that he was given for an injured shoulder. This drug must have been one of those that build up dose by dose in your system because over the period of 3 days I noticed his reaction getting progressively worse. Now, on the bottle, it said that a possible side effect to the drug was drowsiness. Oat's reaction was obnoxiousness and hyperactivity. By the 3rd day he had developed this weird stream of consciousness thing. Whatever was going on his mind (which for an NTP type can be just about anything) came out his mouth. In other words the govener was on vacation. Also his normal conversational voice went up by several decibles so that whatever convoluted (and sometimes rude) thought not just came out his mouth, it came out loud!

Well it turns out that a friend of ours and co-worker of Oat's had been noticing this behavior change over the past 3 days. Being an old Texan he decided not to say anything but to watch the reactions of others to Oat's behavior. For him it was like a humorous floor show.

Well, on the 3rd day we 3 were sitting in a restaurant that was known to be a very liberal restaurant. It was right by a very liberal university and all sorts of interesting and weird people frequented it (it was a great place for those who like to people watch). It was also a place where women who chose to liberate themselves from their bra's would go. Now this is a very bad place for an ENTP to be, but for an ENTP with the governer on vacation it was really bad.

Anyway this particurally well endowed and bra liberated woman walked into the restaurant and Oat just couldn't resist the comment. He yelled across the restaurant "would it kill a tree to put on a bra! (he is not fond of liberals, even those who don't wear brra's) Well that got the attention of just about everyone in the restaurant and our friend looked straight at me to see my reaction. I looked at OAT and said "that's it you're cut off, no more muscle realaxers for you!" for I had made the connection between his drugs and his behavior by then. Oat innocently said "What? what did i do?"

He had no idea that he had actually said those things. He said "well I thought those things but I didn't know they came out of my mouth". Well then we decided to leave before we pissed someone off enough to slash our tires or something. I drove him home.

This is the danger for all NTP types when the governer goes on vacation.

Umm, E and I are not functions. INTPs have a dominant Ti (introverted thinking) function and a secondary Ne (extraverted intuition) function. ENTPs have dominant Ne with secondary Ti.

Sorry, there called dimensions acording to the book I read. Sometimes I get going on a tirade and use the wrong word. Like John belushi in the movie Animal House when he said "quit? quit? Did we quit when the German's invaded Perl harbor? It apears that I didn't screw you up by using the wrong word, so I suppose it's okay.

It's not just that you chose the wrong word, though. You treated it as a function in the rest of the sentence, too. E or I cannot act as a "helper".

This is the way I see it. (Decaf, if I'm wrong, please correct me.) Ti is a judgment function, and acts as what you described as a governor (not its only job, but one of them). Ne is a perception function, and does not act as a governor. INTPs have dominant Ti. ENTPs have dominant Ne, and Ti is only their secondary function. That is why the average INTP tends to show more self-restraint than the average ENTP.

I made a non scientific observation that E's are more likely to open their mouth then I's. And by governer I was refering more to one's conscience. I don't believe that your 4 letter code dictates everything you do. I believe that things like past history and social consequences will influence decisions. I was trying to imply that E's have more motivation to not do the things that might cause social isolation (that is piss people off). And that is how being an extrovert can influence the conscience (or governer). Ntp's think a certain way but I believe the social consequences for whatever comes out of their mouths is viewed differently by the Intp's and Entp's. That is that social isolation would be more detrimental to an E then an I. I also understand that they don't think exactly the same, adding either the E and The I to the 3 letter code does change things a lot. What I was saying is that in general The Intp has not cornered the market when pissing people off. ENTP's do a fairly good job of it too. In my experience this comes from being too objective and logical and by not holding their toungue as much as they ought to. I am used to being on non MBTI forums where when I say "the governer" in that context they automatically know that I am talking about the conscience not the Ti judgment function. And as I said before other things like past history and the conscience can influence decisions. I don't believe your 4 letter code is your conscience. It is somehow a part of it but things like religion can also effect your conscience (or your governer). It looks like you are talking apples while I am talking oranges so to speak. Perhaps I should have defined what I ment by the governer. I did think about it at the time but I chose to leave it out. Now that I see how you think on this forum I will try to define things better. I was mearly trying to add more factors that influence behavior then just the 4 letter code.
