You guys seem quite knowledgeable in post-rock/ progressive metal, its something i've been interested in more lately and was wondering whether you could suggest any good bands?

I'll just let you know what I have and what I like/dislike to narrow it down a bit.

Dream Theater- Really good, but I lean towards their more mellow pieces. Love Portnoy and Myung but I have to admit I don't like the singers voice much as its a bit too metal sterotypical for me.

Isis- Got Panopticon recently and am really enjoying it, I think that is about the limit of how heavy I would like a band to be however.

Porcupine Tree- Am pretty well versed in their stuff and would love to hear any bands similar to them.

Mastodon- I have all their albums but I prefer their last two albums, i'm not a big fan of really heavy stuff, and i've enjoyed the last few albums more as they've dropped the growling vocal style. Just so you know I don't personally like growling vocals.

Tool- Pretty much faultless. Love Maynard's voice, any similar bands would be great, but i'm not sure if anyone of the genre can hold a candle to them.

Mars Volta- I havn't really gotten into them much, don't know why though, will have to give them another listen soon.

That's pretty much all i have for progressive metal/ post-rock. I like a lot of alternative rock, grunge and have a pretty hefty progressive rock collection, so I figure this is a good area to expand into. So please enlighten me! :p

P.S. I'm personally not a fan of Devin Townsend's work, I don't think any amount of persuasion would change that ;)

There are a lot of people here who listen to WAAAY more underground music than me, so forgive me if you've heard of these already. :)

Progressive bands: Ayreon, Deadsoul Tribe, Karnivool

Possible progressive bands: Orphaned Land, Protest the Hero

Post-rock bands: Russian Circles, God is an Astronaut, Red Sparowes, 65daysofstatic, Billy Mahonie, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Sigur Ros

Possible post-rock bands: Don Caballero, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness

In case you didn't notice, I like post-rock. And yes I used Wikipedia to list these so if I get some genre/band mix-ups...suck it. :p

P.S. I'm personally not a fan of Devin Townsend's work, I don't think any amount of persuasion would change that ;)
 Rats. Well, can't win them all I suppose. :smoker:

Well, Mr. "a lot of people here listen to wayy more underground music than me" listed most of the bands that came to mind.. I'd also add to that list The Album Leaf. They just released a new album too, and it's quite enjoyable. However, it's not very hardcore, it's actually quite laid back. My friend described it as, "the most laid back post-rock I've ever listened to. And that's not a bad thing, it's actually quite good." Sigur Ros isn't really post-rock IMO, it's dream pop. But whatever genre you want to put it in, it's fucking awesome. Love those guys. God is an Astronaut is also great, same with Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. Those are the bands I've listened to considered 'post-rock'. Happy listening.

Why, of course. Here is your path to enlightenment:

Talk Talk: Talk Talk began to make synth pop in the 80's. Commercially successful but never critically acclaimed. But that was not never what Talk Talk really wanted and so in 1988 they recorded Spirit of Eden, which was a complete departure from their old style. It entered high into the charts but completely flew out in the next week. The first Post Rock album was too much for the mainstream audience. However, Talk Talk had also trouble with EMI, their label.
After Spirit of Eden, Talk Talk only recorded the album Laughing Stock, which was basically more of the same. Soon after, they disbanded.
Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are usually considered to be the first Post Rock albums of music history. Not just that, they are also really good. They both frequently appear in top 100 lists. Did I meantion that they also feature beuatiful cover art?

laughing_stock.jpg

Slint: I just recently discovered Slint (kudos to Vegard). They are also very often named besides Talk Talk as inventors of Post Rock. While never as critically acclaimed as Talk Talk, they were highly influential to the whole genre. When I first listened to them, it reminded me of The Velvet Underground and oddly enough, I'm not the only one who draws that comparison. Not only regarding the sound but also the career. The Velvet Underground often joked, their music sells so badly that everyone who bought an album must have started his own band. The essential album here is Spiderland.

File:Spiderland_advert.JPG

Godspeed You! Black Emperor GY!BE produced only three regular albums but all of them are masterfully crafted and absolutely essential for the genre. The sound is extremely atmospheric and the very long songs do the rest to completely enthrall the listener and lure him into a spiderweb of sound of which he will not escape so easily.

Liftyrskinnyfists.jpg

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band with Choir Ah, the GY!BE successor band. Sort of. The biggest difference is that A Silver Mount Zion is more song-orientated. Oh and they use vocals too. Additionally, it's generally very depressive and dark music.

Horses_in_the_Sky_album_cover.jpg

Mogwai: Our favourite Scottish band! Together with GY!BE the genre-defining band and probably the first act people would answer if you asked them about Post Rock. There is not too much to say about this band, except they are really, really good. Also, they amde the fantastic soundtrack for the fantastic movie The Fountain!

Mr_beast_cover.jpg

Yndi Halda: Where GY!BE is darkness, Yndi Halda is light. The basic sound is very similar; epic and enthralling but the mood is almost the polar opposite - positive and uplifiting. They only released one EP to this date... a 65 minute long EP, so don't be fooled. I love this band.

51tcga4mwfl_ss500_.jpg

The Evpatoria Report: As the name suggest, a Swiss band. They belong also to the more epic category, producing mainly overlong tracks. I'm afraid there is not too much to say. They do nothing groundbreaking but they are very good at that.

Evpatoriareport.golevka.jpg

This Will Destroy You: A relatively new Post Rock band that dives more into ambient climes than other bands. While clearly influenced by the genre classics, it's unique enough to stand on its own feet. Absolutely recommended.

This_Will_Destroy_You_album.jpg

The Ascent of Everest: A unique brand of Post Rock. Not really sure why. This band invokes lots of imagery in my mind. Maybe it's the resonating feeling of ethereal loneliness? Listen and you'll find it out.

aoe.jpg

Caspian: Caspian is another Post Rock band that leans more towards the experimental side. Probably a bit more quiet and mellow than the other bands in the list.

Caspian+-+The+Four+Trees.jpg

Mono: A Japanese band and yet another genre heavyweight that is highly recommended. You see, I'm about to run out of things to say about Post Rock bands and I wouldn't mention them here if they weren't good.

Monohymntotheimmortalwind.jpg

World's End Girlfriend: Mono's little brother. Also Japanese but more experimental and more influenced by classical music and electronica than any other band on this list.

weg.jpg

Pelican: Blah blah blah blahblah Pelican. Blahblah Post Rock. Blah experimental blahblah blah Chicago. Sometimes more metal than rock but good all the time.

Pelican_%E2%80%93_What_We_All_Come_to_Need.jpg

Long Distance Calling: Alright, I'm getting tired of this. I love LDC. Their last album made it on my best albums of 2009 list. They combine elements from Prog Metal with Post Rock to something entirely unique (but which is not Post Metal, that is something different). Also, they're German.

I don't have much to add in terms of post-rock besides what Anthile already suggested, just one band: City of Caterpillar. It's post-rock/screamo, but a good kind of screamo.

YouTube- City Of Caterpillar - And You're Wondering How...

Now, as for prog and prog-metal, I've got far too many suggestions to name. But here are some:

Agalloch - Doesn't sound like any other band ever. A fusion of several types of metal, folk, post-rock and ambient. Give it a shot.

In the Woods - Similar to Agalloch if anything is, but their album Omnio is probably better than anything Agalloch ever did.

Voivod - Jazzy psychedelic thrash metal. Start with Nothingface or Dimension Hatröss.

Progressive bands: Ayreon

Ayreon is one of my absolute favorites, also check out the composer's (Arjen Lucassen) other projects. Ayreon is his best I think, but he's put out other good material as well (Star One is my favorite next to Ayreon).

Opeth is a good progressive metal band, mostly progressive death metal, but they also have some sort of Pink Floydian trippy music.

Also Dream Theater's singer was in a project called FrameShift for an album, that's a good one to check out. They later had Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) join.

Also Symphony X I enjoy for more thrash and power metal influenced prog. I also recomend checking out Protest the Hero (also I now notice the person I quoted all ready mentioned), pretty heavy prog metal (also falls into the mathcore genre, apparently their earlier stuff is hardcore punk though).

Also Queensryche I do quite enjoy (though they've had some crap albums ). I recommend Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime.

There's so much good prog metal, but finding it all can sure take a lot of hunting around.

Not sure if the OP would like a lot of my recommendations, but I'm sure some of the other posters here will.

Nostalgic shoegaze/"black metal." Leans heavily on the shoegaze side, though. Niege's other projects are good, from what I've heard of them, and he should have a new album coming out sometime this month.

Anthile, holy shit good list. Laughing Stock is so beautiful. Now I must check out Ascent of Everest.

Wow thanks for all the suggestions! I've wanted to listen to Sigur Ros for a while so I will definitely get one of theres, but will look up the bands you've posted.

My Dad's got a lot of QueensRyche's albums Aracaris, I don't know why they're progressive metal there's probably loads of bands you could call progressive if they are. But I agree they've only got a few decent albums ;)

I recommend Neurosis, more specifically the albums "The Sun That Never Sets" and "Eye of Every Storm". It's amazing post-rock/sludge metal with a lot of different influences.
Jesu and The Angelic Process are also strongly recommended if you're into shoegazey-type metal.
As far as post-rock goes, Explosions in the sky, God is an Astronaut, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and A Place To Bury Strangers are my current favourites.

I love Camel & Rush but I think they're more progressive rock :p

My university's music department has a particular focus on progressive rock, so the library has pretty much every main progressive rock album you can think of, and of course my laptop has infinite access :D

They are definitely progressive metal, at least a lot of people define them as such anyhow, but they were one of the earlier progressive metal bands, so perhaps a bit different from what maybe you think of now when you hear the term?

As far as Rush which someone else mentioned, I hear arguments over whether they fall into progressive metal, or progressive rock or neither all the time, but again, I think these sort of debates just have to do with people's concepts of these things evolving over time, and in different directions. Now a days it can be hard to even get people to agree on what qualifies as metal.

First there's Hella (although they're more prog rock). Hella features one of my absolute favorite drummers, Zach Hill who has collaborated with Omar Rodriguez of The Mars Volta

I don't think anybody has said Opeth yet, but if you like Porcupine Tree then you'll love Opeth

The Protomen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_protomen it's pretty cool how he uses different voices and accents for the characters.

Well Between the buried and me is a pretty good prog-metalcore band (seeing them April 17th).

Then another favorite band of mine is MESHUGGAH (I admit to not liking them at first but for some reason I kept coming back)

So just lemme know which bands were hit and miss for you (because there's so many more)!

Anthile, I think I love you. My face lit up at GY!BE, climaxed at Ynidi Halda and dropped off at the Ascent of Everest because I own all those albums in between. I have to reaffirm checking out Yndi Halda, just listening to their songs make me feel happy. Very very few things in this world can do that for me.
