Some FPS games with maps that mirror each other seem to do this a lot in certain 1vs1 situations.

Which paths your opponents will take could be predicted by his/her mindset or play-style.

Certain opponents will think that you will take the same path, and in this case you are able to flank them and the whole "reading" his mind game begins.

Survival games like DayZ where you are capable of fooling people into thinking you are an ignorant survivor by setting off certain things.

Your every move should have a purpose, you don't simply move to see things, because the opponent may have already secured that position.

If you defend you have the attackers advantage and you should attack your advancing enemies in most cases.

If you attack you should do this positionally as if you were defending every position.

If you move to the window, it is because it has an advantageous position or view.
You always move from a position worse to the one equal or better in all standards.

And the last thing, your every action should generate at least one threat that is stronger or equally strong to what the enemy can do.

If you can generate two threats at a time you force a guess on your opponent and you win time, if your opponent cannot then respond with something stronger you choose the best option.

In FPS games skill/accuracy is the most important factor, tactics comes next. If you don't allow your opponent to flank you or get on your back and your skill is superior, you will win.

Tactics/knowledge of the map may be useful if your skill is not perfect at the moment, or you have some doubts.

I don't play fps now, but I always liked how there is this measurable ability to aim well that you either have or not, there is a clear difference in skill visible after a few rounds, tactics are for support/compromises in 1vs1 imo.

Sounds a lot like game theory to me.

It's his strategy ....... any similarities to theoretical optimized strategies is purely, beneficial.

It sounds a lot like what I would do but I was never one to articulate properly what goes through my mind.

its more like what choice he makes and how you react to his choices. After all there is only a certain limit to the choices he can make. The more you play the game the more you are familiar with the choices your enemy can make.

This is why I love FPS games with large maps and sniping, I never go looking for my opponent instead I make my opponent come looking for me, or I waggle my ass at them, duck behind cover and no-scope them when they rush up to "catch me by surprise".

Lol the number of fuckers who thought they'd catch me by surprise.

And throwing rocks to distract people in Farcry 2 multiplayer, that worked, how the fuck did that shit actually work, even a goddamn monkey wouldn't be that stupid, one genius even stopped at the edge of the clearing (still in full veiw) looked around as if suspecting a trap and snuck up to inspect the rock.

I shot him in the balls because he sure as hell didn't have any brains.

Hmm, I was considering it from a more competitive aspect.

Usually multiplayer FPS are team sports, so there are several situations when your team dies and you are left alone to assault or defend against two remaining (hopefully injured) opponents.

So it is not that common to assume you are having a sniper rifle, there is one or two dedicated snipers in a team, depending on a game, team size, objective, weapon restrictions, etc.

In most cases from the games I have played, you either have a rifle, a handgun and a few explosives/grenades.
