I think of myself primarily as an artist, so I thought my introductory post may as well be in the Visual Art section. I'm focusing on photography, but I do occasional pencil drawings for myself to look back upon to remind myself that I am legitimate whenever an instance comes about when someone says photography is easy/not an art/just pointing and shooting.

I am nineteen years old. I began drawing when I was seventeen and stopped when I was eighteen. Not bad for two years, eh?

Here comes the photographic part.

I haven't gone shooting in months, because no money or transportation, but I can't wait to start again. This coming September I'm moving from Michigan to South Carolina to spend six months shooting across the country, 24/7. I cannot wait.

I recently began studying in depth into my personality type because I wanted to figure out more about myself, that way I could connect characteristics of my personality with characteristics of certain subjects and lighting and what they symbolize to create pieces that more fully represent who I am, and how I feel.

I am not going to college, but I would like to eventually.. just not yet. Maybe in my thirties I'll go back and earn my PhD in the arts.

I love engaging in conversations about art and art theory.

Thanks for looking!

Wow, you have some really good stuff man.

I really liked the cityscape one, probably because it reminded of this picture from Shorpy.

I'd like to see more :)

At nineteen, those pictures are quite amazing.
I must say, you have highly developed compositional skill.
Great colour balance too.
But I think the part that surprised me the most was when you said you were trying to study your personality to create a composition that reflects who you are.
People who train in the area of arts often have hard time even trying to figure out where to start in terms of developing one's style. Often, people online just replicate certain styles they find online, like the whole fake HDR images which are extremely popular these days. But at age nineteen, to have realized the merit of being an artist is to express yourself, is a strong indication of natural talent.

I do not think one needs to have formal education to be an artist. In architecture (field I am familiar with), some of the greatest architects of all time did not even go to school. In fact, I think sometimes institutions like colleges may hamper one's ability to grow and search for who you are, because you are trained by professors who inevitably have certain styles and preferences.

excellent photos. i hate when people say photography isn't an art too. it's just one of those things where some people just don't get it, i suppose.

I'm impressed with how you play with light. Dramatic. Not only speed-lights I can see.

I think this is one of the secrets to truly artistic photography. Prior I've mostly just tried to manipulate naturally occuring light. With artificial lightning one can really bring in another dimension. Real Ti snacks. Fun too.

Great work.
