Overloaded Intuition

I guess this is more of a question for decaf... although personal experiences help answer it too.

have any of you just felt like your intuition was overloaded trying to take in information? Is it even possible? I overstepped myself this year, I think, expecting my mind to be able to take in more information than it was capable of in my classes. It was all fine for 4 or 5 weeks, but then it suddenly just... stopped working. It's like I could understand stuff fine, and I didn't think I was stressed, but everything new just stopped working itself in and I practically lost the ability to make connections. Then I dropped the class that was giving me the most raw, disconnected information (bio), so I only had the more conceptual physics and math classes left, and within about 2 more weeks my brain was just back to normal again. The thing is, bio wasn't time consuming... and I only really thought about it during the hour I was there, three times a week. It really shouldn't have had any effect on anything... but when it was gone I got undeniably better at all my other classes, which are very Ne-centered.

so is it possible to just "overload" your information-gathering function so that it ceases to work as well?

Behind you, kicking you in the ass
The human brain was once described to me as akin to an electrical system. Overload a circuit and blow the fuse. I know that sounds overly simplistic but I think it does answer your basic question about overloading your information gathering. I think what would be interesting to examine is why your bio class seemed to be the factor that caused your "overload".

Did you enjoy your bio class? It didn't sound like you were paying it much attention.

This is a phenomenon I came into contact even before I started studying type theory. I think in some ways its what convinced me that the theory had something to it.

Anyone can do any job for 3 months. HR personnel know this all too well. They may not do it great, but they can do it. So how do you make sure you're hiring people to fill positions that they'll still be filling years from now. Unfortunately with the evolution of society and a few bad modifications to the job acquisition process we don't care anymore. Jobs have been changed to require only the most general training if at all possible and then employees are cycled through as the need for that job fluctuates. So obviously the 3 month rule doesn't really mean 3 months, but it gives an idea of the time frame it happens in. Biology in this case was your badly fitting job.

To use type theory it can be described as having poor management. Your dominant function wants to do the bulk of the work, and then delegate accordingly. When it doesn't really have a vital job to do it delegates everything... but eventually it gets tired of waiting in the wings and tries to jump in. Enter the bad manager. While in this state you can be very decisive and feel comfortable, but eventually you'll start to realize that your decisions aren't very good. There's also the aspect of intense use of non-dominant functions is tiring, but this is why I believe even periodic use only non-dominant functions can be equally disastrous.

How to solve the problem? I'm working on it :D Oh, and this is all only relevant to IPs as far as I've thought this out.

I like to read a lot, mostly educational books about psychology, religion or science. The information can be overloading at times. I have dealt with it by forcing balance in my life. I work out 4 times a week for one hour at a time. I try to schedule in social time where I rip myself away from my introverted lifestyle and try to be social. I also try to give myself plenty of space out time so that I can process things, either the information in my current book or other stuff. Also every 3rd book I read I try to read a not so technical book. One that appeals to emotions more. I don't know why but if I occasionally read a book that appeals to emotions I can handle the technical stuff better

I will read a biography or a less technical self help book or something else interesting. Recently I read a really strange book about a woman who supposedly spent 4 months on a walkabout with a group of Aborigines. The book was supposedly non fiction but I think the book store must have made a mistake and put it in the wrong section. Regardless of this it was a good read.

If you are able to, try to schedule in a less technical class next term, get your butt to the gym, get your butt out and try to be a little social and also give yourself some "processing time". Oh Shit. Now I sound like somebody's mother. Sorry.

I am not sure that my Ne or Ni can be overloaded. It's when I'm forced to use Se and remember facts/details that I'm overloaded. Easily.

:D, thanks anyway grey... there're worse things to sound like than somebody's mother.

that sounds very possible, decaf. I'm kind of thinking it wasn't so much the material or anything as it was I just can't get away from people completely in a big city like this. Even in my room there's a rommate--every time the weekend rolled around during these weeks, my brain was screaming out for a solid 5 or 6 ours (at least) alone. The only time I felt good was when my roommate went away for the weekend and I got a full weekend to myself. And still, by the next weekend I was aching to get away again.

I think this would be what you'd describe as the Ti lead just not getting its chance to work in a vital role. Bio is nothing but taking in information, at least in the class I was in--actually piecing things together and making connections wasn't required in the slightest... and I wasn't getting time alone to just throw on music and analyze things like I could over the summer. I was just curious as to whether or not it was possible to overload a function... but you could easily make the case that i was just leaving out the dominant one too much as well.

Also, what function is responsible for taking in facts? Or does that depend on the personality? I just assumed it was Ne, because I thought that was our information-gathering one... but after seeing Waterstiller I realized I actually have no idea whether that's true or not.

I think the best function for taking in information is extraverted perceiving. The people most prone to making decisions without enough information probably have extraverted perceiving as their inferior. That's just a thought based on the fact that our inferior is extraverted judging, and what do we have a problem with?
