Netflix only.

Anybody watching this? Cheap entertainment, I'm watching it to unwind. Instead of developing the characters and story it just seems to be unravelling as time goes on however.

Hadn't heard of it but since imdb recommends it for those who like Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and Hannibal it is now on my to watch list, thanks.

Just started watching last night. My entj friend thought it was great. Reviews were unexpectedly positive.

Hadn't heard of it but since imdb recommends it for those who like Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and Hannibal it is now on my to watch list, thanks.

Well, there are three of the best shows IMO that I've ever seen.

They're going for a shock/twist approach. Expect to see lots of female body parts, some quite explicit. On the positive side the characters are believable and they don't overplay the humor as is often done.

Explicit female body parts are on the negative side?

Naked pictures of females are easy to come by today, adding them gratuitously to a movie or show doesn't add much. If it was done seductively then that would be something, but these are prison women so it's pretty raw. Which supports the plot I suppose.

I watched the first half of the pilot last light and was witness to a hotter lesbian make-out scene than straight, and yes, there were boobs.

But it didn't really bother me or seem out of place. I think HBO's "Dream On" was far more gratuitous; in fact, that show pretty much had a two-pronged approach to success: (1) sexual innuendo and (2) lots of boobs, some from celebrity actors.

I liked the kind of offhand humor. The prison guards were amusing, just in the things they said and their attitudes; one example of humor is this woman who is going in for 15 months and leaving her fiance behind, so there's lots of drama when she gets taken into the system from her end, and they're just completely indifferent and business-as-usual, including discussion in trivial detail how to pronounce/spell last names and complaining because they weren't informed of a new inmate.

Interesting.

...That is: “Arrested Development” did better in its first week than “House of Cards” did in its first week, both in terms of viewer numbers and hours viewed. That isn’t a huge surprise, because “House of Cards” was a new show, and “Arrested Development” was a reboot of a series with a big fan base.

But “Orange Is the New Black,” which debuted earlier this month, did better than any other show Netflix has released.

And that is surprising.

While “Orange Is the New Black” got glowing reviews, many of which argued that the women’s prison dramedy may be Netflix’s best series to date*, it got very little hype. Especially compared to “House of Cards” and “Arrested Development,” which featured tons of famous names and lots of high-profile marketing.

But unless you know the name of the actor best-known for having sex with a pie, you probably won’t recognize anyone in “Orange Is the New Black.” People are either watching it because Netflix suggests it (Netflix says more than 75 percent of viewing comes via its recommendation algorithms) or because people they know are suggesting it...

To quote Meatloaf: 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Guess which 2?

The promo images remind me of the sort used for wacky sitcoms. Those preconceived notions set in.

But I hear good things. As always, wait and see.

Prisoner Cell Block H + Annoying 'ROMCOM' Scenes = Totally worth it for the Kate Mulgrew bits.

I finished it. Intense in spots and plenty of gratuitous nudity. I don't understand the development of one of the characters, but the rest are good. On Mulgrew I thought her character was a bit weak at the start but gets better. Or maybe I just get used to Capn Janeway acting like a Russian. Good story development too, I'm looking forward to season two, but not on the edge of my chair.

Got really sick yesterday and started watching. I like it. Maybe the first female-driven ensemble show that isn't centered either on chasing after men and status or bad comedy written explicitly to prove that Girls Do Guy Stuff Too. Dialogue is believable and often creative without trying too hard. The strongest part about it is that the pace is virtually flawless and I never felt my attention drift off (it's increasingly challenging for me to focus on tv/movies these days too).

I loved this show. I found the show because of the Netflix top banner at the time of the launch... Watched the entire season in a single day binge. Was it better than House of Cards? I won't go there, but it was good in its own right. I did like it better than the Arrested Development season. Loved arrested development when it first ran. Found the Netflix reboot lacking.

I recently started this show with my wife and we both enjoy it so far, even though the "origin story" - her being a former drug mule - is a little weird in my opinion. Otherwise it is a show, you can watch to relax, because you don't really have to think about what's happening or analyse.

damn tight drama; lovable characters with sufficient complexity that never comes at the expense of pace and elegance; great mix of continuity and surprise.

now i gotta admit don't know how much of this is derivative tv engineering and how much is real creativity. i don't watch a lot of series.

I started the second season through Netflix. It seemed too obvious to me, I think I'm done with the show.

I like how piper toughened up in the second season and how the focus was less about her, especially with how annoying I found her in the first season. All in all I really like it, very good actors and character development albeit a bit over the top at times.

Second season is shaping up to really suck. You can tell the show knows it's a hit, so the acting and writing is slapdash and obvious. Not sure I can stick it out.

I think its the creator having free reins following the success of the first season.

If you follow the trajectory of Weeds, Jenji Kohan's first success on pay TV, she goes through lulls in trying to keep so many character arcs going at once that as a whole it suffers. Over time when you look at how she plans a series out these ebbs and flows even out til they hit a climax and then descend to a slow petering out before cancelation.

We haven't reached OitNB climax yet and it is llikely to begin at the end of this season. Get ready for Jenji juju this summer!
