I have been pondering... (And I'm sure preaching to the choir when I use that phrase) the differences between my peer/ age group and that of my younger sister. My group is that of the late 80s/ early 90s, and she is of the late 90s. But, in just the few short years between my generation and hers, I've noticed that there is a distinct difference in the world.

It seems there is a cut-off point in the mid 90s, after which kids seem far more cut off from the world that came before them, from tradition and unique personal culture, if that makes any sense. It seems in that short time, kids have lost contact with the last few centuries of human development. Perhaps it's the electronic age we have entered, but it seems to me that there has been a fundamental shift in thinking between the children of the early 90s and those of the late 90s.

Is it just me? Discussion.

It's comparable to the 60s, I suppose.

People say the same thing every generation, it's just that perhaps this time there is a slightly wider gap than usual.

That is what I was thinking.

Perhaps it is from the rise of a more integrated and pushy worldwide culture. Really, a rather new form of culture, methinks.

An example. I transferred in to th university I attended, and I was chatting with a senior there i the honors college. Currently, the honors college lounge is occupied by folks who act just as idiotic as anyone else in any other part of the school. But a few years ago, it was dominated by debates, on philosophy, or theology, or politics. Far less intellectual than it used to be.

Meh. The more it changes, the more it stays the same. Give them a little time to grow up before passing judgment on their generation.

Eh, just feeling a bit cynical and paranoid...

It's my own generation I see the difference in, I have always been in a higher age-group for various reasons, and everyone is just... different, even when ages correlate... Oh well, just being myself. I'll shut up now and let this thread be buried and hopefully die a quick death. :rip:

That's what I was thinking. It seems to be a dramatic change. Time will tell if it was a good one of course. I tend to be extremely traditional in many ways, so to me it seems like a devolution. But we shall all see.

I also really don't like the gravitation away from the intellectual.

I don't think that's actually what's happening. At least, not on a personal or cultural level.

Higher education may be getting less intellectual, but I think that's probably a symptom of the education inflation that's been going on for years now.

Knowledge is more easily available. And I presume culture is more easily discarded. Brainwashing becomes more challenging for parents, Culture is brainwashing. But I do not think there is much need to worry. Cultural imprinting I would consider to still be in the 95% range. So the 'loss' of culture is very small. And is replaced with new values that will become culture in time. So nothing changes, one just perceives that things are changing. I think it's part of the life cycle. What creates time. The perceptions.

But then again. I'm living in my room in the basement, so this may not be how I imagine.
