Hey, everyone. =]

My name's Alex Ford, but all my friends have called me Fordy for as long as I can remember. It's 4D for short, if you like.

Well, where do I start?

A few weeks ago at college - where, by the way, I'm studying: Drama and Theatre Studies, English Language, Law and Business Studies... that tells you a lot about me, I guess - we took a shortened version of the Myers Briggs (did I spell it right?) MBTI test. Apparently I was an ISTP, which seemed quite right at the time. But then, out of sheer boredom really, I took a few full tests online. Turned out I was actually an INTP - was unsure of this at first, but after reading that description - http://www.intp.org/intprofile.html - I was sure my results were right. It's freaky, that description was like reading all about myself. Every single aspect of it was right (apart from the whole liking classical music thing... :p).

Then I somehow ended up here, and ended up looking around for a few days. I was in awe... Each thread is like how I think to myself, except its all being written down for me, and some people come up with ideas I'd never even thought of. So of course, I felt obliged to join up. There are some great people here from what I've seen, and it'd be nice to post with some of you.

See you around.

(Oh, and I'll get round to getting an Avatar and Signature sooner or later)

I find myself constantly discovering posts that even put into words impressions that I had only thought about subconsciously. It's a great feeling to be understood, finally, isn't it?

Welcome! :D

Especial welcome to another Brit ;). We are severely outnumbered here - though there is a contingent from Northern Ireland. Now about these North Americans.....*Nia whispers something to Fordy and makes him swear not to reveal what was said* :phear::D

We love you to even though you are mean to us! Just because you have fancy accents doesn't mean the insults don't still hurt! :D

But you have to admit that being insulted in that funny...er, I mean fancy accent does take the sting off just a bit.

Do any other Americans here adore English, Irish, Scottish, and Australian accents? There is something about them that is just awesome to me. Even if they say something stupid it sounds very intelligent to me.

Does it work the opposite to them. Even if I say something intelligent, do I sound stupid to them?

Two of my closest friends come from Mississippi and Raleigh, N Carolina. They have extremely strong southern drawls which reminds me of sun, hospitality, graciousness and a wonderfully slow way of life. I see verandahs, Cary Grant, being swept off my feet by tall, handsome, patrician estate-owners...hmm, I better shut up now. Seriously, an American accent is the embodiment of Harrison Ford-like 'cool' as long as your name isn't George Bush or Donald Rumsfeld.

And everything everyone says on this forum sounds bloody intelligent to me - but there again, I filter it through my english accent. You all sound English to me :D

Texans don't usually have that real strong southern drawl like you here out of Tennesee, Kentuckey, etc. Tommy Lee Jones' voice is the consummate Texas accent, but I live in the city so it isn't as strong. Nia, I read your posts with an English accent in my mind. I told Cog that I hear Crocodile Dundee's voice when I read his posts. it's interesting to see how other might percieve our appearance and voices on the forum.

I wish I could do that. I'm rubbish at accents and acting - I mean totally! My 13 year old son is a brilliant actor and can put on any accent he wishes. I will now ask him to read out all the posts in the relevant accents - what films star Tommy Lee Jones?:D

Some Suggestions:

"No Country for Old Men" - One of my all time favorites
"The Fugitive"
"Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" - Very underrated - directed by him and filmed on his ranch here in texas
"Space Cowboys"
"Natural Born Killers"
"JFk"
"Black Moon Rising"

Bollocks! Bollocks! Perhaps one could provide the etymology of this expression which one has never encountered before - having such a refained sensibility.

Pray, what is a "British wanker" is this associated with the rather vulgar practice of onanism?

*Nia reflects to herself - this is what comes of mixing with 'sweeps'*

For the record, I am serious about liking these accents. Even if its gutter talk, I like hearing them for some reason. Accents period are nice on the ears for me. My wife has a beautiful Spanish accent and I love it!

You know, funny, i always thought British speak English and Americans speak accident, uhm, accent. :D:p

I have to citate something here, but i guess this will cost me my vice-presidency with Noidiots...:(

A Message from John Cleese

To: The citizens of the United States of America:

In light of your failure to nominate competent candidates for President
of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the
revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical Duties
over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas, which
she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a governor for
America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of
you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following
rules are introduced with immediate effect:

You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.

1. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will
be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and
'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without
skipping half the letters, and the suffix -ize will be replaced by the
suffix -ise.

Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable
levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises
such as 'like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form
of communication.

There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on Your
behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of
the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize. You will relearn
your original national anthem, God Save The Queen.

4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns,
lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and
therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent.

Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to
sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then
you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything
more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you
wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

7. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for
your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we
mean. Holden Monaro's are also approved.

8. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will
start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you
will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of
conversion tables.
Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British
sense of humour.

9. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have Been
calling gasoline) - roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French
fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato
chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in
animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

11. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not Actually
beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to
as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be
referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable as they are
pound for pound the greatest sporting Nation on earth and it can only be
due to the beer. They are also part of British Commonwealth - see what
it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen
Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

12. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors As
good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to
Play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English
dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to
having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

13. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of
proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, In
time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American
football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds
or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). Don't Try
Rugby - the South Africans and Kiwis will thrash you, like they
regularly thrash us.

14. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to
host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played
outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a
world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn
cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the
sting out of their deliveries.

15. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

16. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's
Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all
monies due (backdated to 1776).

17. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, never mugs,
with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries in season.

God save the Queen.

LOL :D About that casting of english actors as baddies....that is REALLY annoying

Omg - do you think they will be insulted :phear:

I just love John Cleese especially in Fawlty Towers. Talking of accents, I love them too, especially in A Fish Called Wanda staring Cleese - it's that magnetic Russian accent that reduces the Jamie Lee Curtis to jelly.

So, when do we start reshape the world? Do we have to wait for little annoyances like elections and such?

Welcome Fordy. Are you enjoying this thread as much as we are?

So what's the plan for world domination? Or are we going to wing it?

NoI(diots) i'd propose asking Asimov for help. In his Foundation trilogy, oh wait, it was some other authors who wrote prequels to that. In this there are devices, hidden in orbit which 'calm' the aggressive thoughts of the people. Thusly they loose their tendency to rebellion, doubt and 'difficulty in handling'. I think that would be a good starting point... ;)

Ogion

EDIT: Hey, since when do you think about our (NoI and mine) plans? Well, you may get to be our advisors...

I guess as INTP's its just enough to know that we could overtake the world if we wanted to. We could get the ball rolling, take over, like, a quarter of it and then just lose interest and go back to discussing politics and religion.

Well I was thinking about this...calming the aggressive thoughts of the people by setting up a cult and then being a repository of total power and domination. Despite my sweet facade, behind it all I do have this tendency towards megalomania....

Are you sure you're not thinking about Card's Homecoming series rather than Foundation? I know the 'overmind' in the Homecoming books had that effect. I don't remember it in the foundtion trilogy (Bear, Benford and Brin. The 3Bs)

Yes, i'm sure it was in the Foundation trilogy prequels (by the authors you mentioned). You know there were these robots with their zero-th law of robotics? "Protect humankind" (well, that's the meaning at least). So they started this giant 'conspiracy', i you want to call it that way. One thing for example was this 'harmonizer' with which to keep the populations calm and 'boring' (that thing actually supressed creativity, innovation and revolutions in sciences as well). But it brought stability...

Ogion

EDIT: What's Card's homecoming? Perhaps we do mean the same thing? I mean the books which play before the Foundation and which explain a ton of things about the Foundation-Universe, history, civilization and stuff)

I'm referring to this series. In it, there was a sattelite called an overmind that diverted human thoughts from the ideas and technologies that that led to the collapse of civilization on Earth. I think because it was such an important aspect of the storyline, that's why I remembered it. I just don't remember that in the Foundation trilogy we're talking about. Those books weren't all that memorable to me though.

So, Fordy, you there?

(Five pages, I'm impressed.
Gotta say that Nia's posts started making more sense to me when I inserted the brit accent. It's something about the emphasis, I think.
And texans? In my closest encounter with a texan I was guessing every third word. Funny encounter, on the other hand. He looked like... well, like a skinhead, but we talked about Pride and Prejudice.)

Oh, I'm here alright. I'm here for good. *Evil laugh*

But yeh... How did this thread go from introduction to British accents to world domination?
Not that I'm complaining about getting 5 pages in half a day.

But yeh:
1- I'm from Lancashire, and some people around here do have really broad accents, and occasionally it pops up in my speech. (Lancashire accents being that of farmers obsessed with fish n chips, pork pies and driving combine harvesters)
London accents are all people think we do. But hey, I'm an actor, I can do Lancashire, Cockney, Scouse, Birmingham, London, Geordie, Yorkshire, etc etc. Theres a whole range of annoying accents in this country yet only 1 is recognised by Americans! Pah!

2- I'd take over the world with you guys, but I'm a procrastinator. I'll do it next year... Maybe.

And 3 - Thanks for the welcomes. :p
