If you believe in an ideal that doesn't make you become the ideal. It just makes you a slave to the ideal. Once the ideal is dead, you no longer have a purpose. If there is no purpose then why believe in the ideal? All things die with time. If time is not constant then time may get to the point where something dead can be brought back to life. If time can bring something from death to life then the ideal may be brought back as well. If the ideal is brought back to life the to your belief can be brought back to life. If your belief can be brought back to life then there is purpose in believing in the ideal.

All hypothetical of course.

For the sake of argument assume the following statement to be true:

Life has no true purpose, and ends with death. Nothing follows death, and death is merely the termination of your consciousness; which has ended because your brain has ceased to function.

Life is nothing special, and there is no such thing as death. We are just sacks of chemicals undergoing a rare chemical reaction. Life can't be defined as consciousness because then I die every time I go to sleep. Life and death are only minor shades of nuance in the swirling vortex of planet earth. Life and death are one, so there is no point distinguishing the two from each other. We were never alive. How can something that was never alive die?

And so if service is what brings one happiness, then it should be done for one's own sake. But anything "selfless" would by definition not be beneficial to the self, as one would gain nothing. It would in fact be damaging to the self, and seems a false ideal.

So yes I kind of agree with you. :)
