My music spectrum is insanely broad. My two favorites genres are indie type stuff on one side and brutal deathcore at the other. Truthfully, I like metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, indie, experimental/ progressive rock, post-rock, progressive/experimental metalcore/ deathcore, and generally any mixture of those.

Some bands I like (with my sucky genre-categorizing):

As Cities Burn (experimental indie, post-hardcore)
I Built the Cross (Technical deathcore)
mewithoutYou (post-rock, experimental indie)
Psalters (world, tribal, experimental)
House of Heroes (experimental indie)
Destroy the Runner (technical metalcore)
Colour Revolt (indie)
The Famine (technical metalcore)
Impending Doom (Grindcore/ Deathcore)
In the Midst of Lions (technical deathcore, experimental)
Killswitch Engage (technical metalcore)
Mychildren Mybride (technical metalcore)
On Solid Ground (deathcore)
Saosin (post-hardcore)
Stray From the Path (mathcore, hardcore)
Set Your Goals (pop-punk, hardcore)

Truly, I am open to most any music, except, for sure, country and rap. I hate that stuff. If anybody would like to suggest me any bands, though, that would be fantastic. Also, before you rage at any inaccuracy that may or not be in the list above genre-wise, my categorizing is not perfect, and sometimes, sucks. It is hard to categorize bands like mewithoutYou, Psalters, and As Cities Burn. My favorite stuff is almost always innovative, progressive, and technical.

EDIT: I also like classical as well, but never have the means or motivation to look for some. I suppose the classic (is that redundant) like Beethoven and Mozart would be good starting places.

:D You just touched on one of Anthile's pet peeves.

Speaking of liking just about anything, do you enjoy dark cabaret? I've been enjoying Jill Tracy a lot lately. She's a little high pitch and nasally but sets a deeply delicious cigars and cognac sort of mood. I also enjoy Voltaire (Devil's Bris). Fun stuff. Of course there's always Rasputina if you are in an angry girl band with a Viola kind of mood.

You've heard of Vesperian Sorrow yes?

It always feels like some sort of confessional but I actually don't mind rap. I would even go so far as to admit that I like a lot of rap. I'm not a fan of mass produced thug life rap but then I'm not really a fan of most mass produced versions of any kind of music. However, I'll enjoy it if it's a little creative. My favorite rapper is Jovanotti more recently known as Lorenzo. It's top 100 stuff from Italy but I enjoy it. I also enjoy folk and blues. There are a lot of people out there that would call a lot of folk and blue country. I don't enjoy whiney songs about people's dead dogs and sweaters but some country isn't bad.

Despite the fact that I listen to a lot of core, it remains that I do like a wide variety of music.

Besides that, I do want a ton more music that isn't core or even metal at all. I want some epic music... but god, I have no idea. Meh.

That second smily... lol. I am on the forum that practically invented that.

So yeah, if any of you guys can recommend me some music like the above, I will be forever indebted to you.

If it has some experimental/progressive aspects to it, you get bonus points.

I second the Mars Volta recommendation. :) Some others would be Isis, Pelican, Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet, OSI, Apocalyptica, Russian Circles, and Opeth. Sorry, I don't feel like posting youtube links, as I'd want to post several songs for each artist/band.
