I was having a conversation with my brother about why we were better at different types of video games. I would appreciate it if anyone can describe what functions we are using when we engage this type of media.

Sins of a solar empire -

I played this game a year and a half ago. I don't remember it but my brother says that I could defeat 2 military factions on the hardest setting without A.I. assistance. He could only take on half a military faction with A.I. assistance for the other half.

Sonic the Hedgehog -

He is really good at this game genre. He says that he looks at the center of the screen and uses mussel memory to improve his reaction time. I can never get sonic to do anything because I lack the patience to improve my dexterity.

Halo -

I could almost always take my brother out because I could get to the rocket launcher/sniper rifle/grenades before he did. He said I cheated by looking at his side of the TV screen to avoid him and that I was using the weapons I chose as a crutch for my lack of direct confrontation ability's.

Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic - The Sith Lords -

I never play the dark side because I can't get the full storyline that way. I can convert all the characters to Jedi that are allowed to by the game. My brother didn't even know that was possible. But he can balance the skills of the charters required for a specific task or level.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent for the wii -

Unlike my brother I cannot instantly remember the location of all the objects in the environment. I must experiment with the environment and dialog multiple times to maximize finding a way to make the charter as skilled and ethical as possible along with large amounts of resources to utilize in the future.

Mushroom Men for the wii -

On the wii you can use your whole body almost. To that affect my dexterity is greatly improved. There were many ways to experiment in this video game. You could accomplish many tasks in more ways than one and thats what made my brother frustrated in the way I played it. I could stack blocks/objects to get to places my reflex skills would not allow me to otherwise.

The Conduit for the wii -

In this game I could move between enemies to take advantage of shooting positions that I would be safe in well completing the objective. When I wasn't able to get to a safe location because it was an open area I could not shoot them very often because I was to focused on not losing health points. So I had to know when to retreat or move forward based of the numbers and weapon they had.
My brother told me I wasted time doing it that way but that only because he has reflex skills.

Sounds to me like you're using Ni while your brother is using Se.

Sounds to me like you're using Ni while your brother is using Se.

If I am INFP then Ni is in my shadow functions and I am using it subconsciously.

What would indicate if a persons Ni is being used on the subconscious level?

I am unsure as to where Se is in my brothers hierarchy of functions.

Seems you have a very similar game play style I have, I don't know much about Ni, but since I don't know if I use Ni I would say it is more Ne you are using. And as for your brother, seems similar to my ISTP brother, so I am thinking Si.

Of course don't take my word for it, I really haven't grasped the concept full enough.

I'm sure Ska meant Socionics/Jung Ni. In this case it would be some mesh of MBTI Ti/Ne.

But I agree. I do the same thing. My cousin is ESTP and we always compete in FPSs. He has crazy reflex skills and is always one step ahead of me. I usually think ahead and plan out other's action but take too much time to act. I can dominate on other types of games though.

In the original Killzone we used to play maps for hours at a time and no matter how hard I played, his score was always higher >.<. It doesn't help that he's younger than me.

Definitely Ni. I love to stock up resources and then come out fully upgraded and optimized. I prefer skilling over PVP in MMOs.

I would have to say that I find it easy to defeat a reflex person, my brother is easily defeated, but if I am not paying attention he can destroy me. But usually my strategy is to well formulated for him to defeat me with reflexes alone. I am talking about FPS. And since he is unaccustomed to strategy he can't defeat me, and I find him copying my maneuvers, and of course he doesn't understand why I can counter them. He eventually gets pissed and walks away angry.

When playing RTS against him it is about the same, think I mentioned it somewhere else, but he just builds defense, mounted on itself, while I build specialized armies, maneuvering them all around and confuse the hell out of him and obtain victory before he even realizes I attacked, he got to the point to where if he happened to glimpse my little guys maneuvering he would just give up and walk away.

I seem to play opposite or at least do both. My reflexes are quite incredible and my tactics in FPS's are quite different than the average player, usually involves going the opposite way of everyone else on my team to flank.

I do the same. :p But still am the first one killed cause the opposing team had a similar thinker.

I usually sacrifice myself in FPSs.

Haha I could never do that, I am not the best player, far from it, but I am the one usually telling others to sacrifice their self for the good of the team, most the time it is to initiate a trap of some sort.

Edit: I usually either have no deaths or the most deaths. I feel this way, if I die, which if I place myself in situations to die, I will miss something and my team will suffer because I didn't notice and take advantage of something.

My golden principle is for the team. If there is a way to kill an annoying member of the other team which results in my death I will do it 100% of the time. That's mainly because I rush and have zero patience. At the start of a round I will normally try my hardest not to die and if I get half way through the round without dying I become highly cautious. I have gotten some great K/D ratios this way but normally I come first with a lot deaths.

I play a lot of different genres, though my favorites are semi to full customizable fantasy/sci-fi action. I don't really play any of the games you listed. I HAD to try Halo and only ever played in verses. Do Not Like First person POV. (BTW in ffa I tend to hide until everyone else has killed each other, at least if I'm trying to win or get second... hate fps)

But are you trying to figure out your type based on how you play games? People use all the Jung functions, there's just usually a tendency to certain ones. Some people are very close to the middle as far as type.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if people use shadow functions and whatnot in games. It depends on the type of game you play and how you play it. Since I haven't played much of the games you listed (I cannot play Sonic either...) I would rather like to know if you play MMOs and what general class you play(caster? heals? tank? speed DPS? range? melee/tank?) I have a theory about that being telling as far as people's personality, maybe not "type" per se.

^@ Zero, on MMO I tend to play tank if possible, which I feel I am good at, in WoW I played tank before being tank was "cool." but after everyone and their grandmother was tank I went with melee/off-tank. Played a warrior(also tanked on a dk which was very fun, both end game) so not much I could do haha. I played healers liked them, but preferred to tank. Could never dps worth a shit. I just wasn't good at it. So what does that say about me?

I did not suspect to find a tank on here, but we'll see if my hypothesis is any good. I may be making too big of an association...

From my experience in Pugs, tanks often have to be the leaders. They tend to know the layout of dungeons or at the very least are observant of enemy patterns and plan the attack. They know where to be and where other people should be. This is not always the case, but when I was playing in pugs it was. Like I said, I don't have much experience with WoW, however I know the classes are way more flexible than the Korean MMOs I play.

Tanks are major defense, they get to go in first and take the pain. Usually they are suppose to keep aggro off the healer. I would expect a tank to be a strategic sort of person, a planner. I would suspect a tank is also someone who is good at figuring out what should be done next and doesn't mind having responsibility for a team.

Of course, in guilds this can be slightly different, since things can be planned before going in and people get accustom to how others play. Since a lot of people play melee/tank (also happens like that in other games), it's hard to really define a person. It could mean they are new to MMOs, but if they usually play melee/tank I suspect they are all about being at the center of the action, up close and personal. They don't necessarily want to plan or be responsible for the group. My STP bro plays melee/tank most.

I would probably think of a tank as being a TJ type. Most often EN/ES IMO. Of course in a game the first expression (I/E) is going to be deluded, because socializing via computer is very different and totally customizable in comparison to reality.

BTW I play casters or heals. I tend to default with caster, but if they're too easy I will play heals.

In halo 2 there's this large multiplayer map inside a city, I've forgotten the name of it, anyway I remember constantly leading people into ambushes or predicting which path they were taking through the map and ambushing them myself. For me it was always a game of tactics, not that I couldn't hold my own in a firefight (I would jump & duck constantly) it's just that more often than not having cover or the high ground (particularly if they had a rocket launcher) was the difference between victory and defeat.

Well I am ENTP, so the up in your face, I'll lead the way thing is sort of what I can do, but if someone wants to take the lead I don't care. But as soon as they mess up I step in and take over. I notice a lot of S types feel they are good leaders, but according to all I have read in MBTI ENTJs and INTJs are the only good leaders that like to be leaders, and ENTPs are supposed to be good leaders but like INTPs don't really want to be.

But yes that was back in the day before tanks became to easy. When it was hard I loved the challenge, I loved being the middle of attention, I was right there, had to protect the healer at all costs, I even would sacrifice myself to save the entire party. Which I think comes from my some what developed Fe.

Most the time when I had a party with a person that was like "I am leader," I knew that they would fail, why do S types think they are the best leaders? I am just good at explaining things to people vocally so in vent it made things easy for me to lead, and in my guild I would usually be the one leading our little 5mans before we all got to end game level quality.

Maybe I have just had bad experience with S types being leaders but so far I cannot say they even do fair, they suck. They see no possibilities, nothing clever or new, it is always something predictable, something they saw someone else do before. I was in a group with someone I know had to be an INTJ from how they did things and they were very good at leading. Also there was an INTP I played with all the time, some person from England, and they were good at leading but would always have me do the leading, so I will assume INTPs can lead, but you guys just don't want to.

I have led a few times but never because I wanted to. It was always when no one else stood up. I don't think it's the natural state for a INTP to lead.

He is using Se (quick reflexes) and Ti (high value places on on personal competence) so he'd be ISTP (Ti-Se-Ni-Fe) or ESTP (Se-Ti-Fe-Ni) and you're using some kind of intuitive function, not clear whether Ni or Ne. Sounds more like Ne to me - knowing multiple ways something can be accomplished. My Ni usually points out to me one most efficient way, but it is not clear. Initially I see multiple paths but at the end I zero in on what I think is most efficient one.

What if you get caught up into what is your character background, regardless of the game genre?

I often get killed in FPS because i'm thinking that if my character is a well trained warrior, he'll look after covers before any movement. And when i find an enemy, i get kind of surprised, then scared, before shooting.

Hmm I guess it's probably not the best comparison, as there are only about six general categories to consider with MMOs.

In Fly For Fun there were four original classes that go to eight specialties. In Aion it was three that went to six. Aren't there like 12 in WoW?

I agree that ENTJs and ENTPs are usually the best leaders, though I've had a run in with an ENTP IRL that wasn't so good. I've known him for a long time though and we're still friends, I just don't want to work with or for him, ever. It's not because of his type though. He had issues...

Sensor are more prominent in the population thatn Intuitives, supposedly. If that's true, most of the conflict you'll have will be with Sensors, just by default of their majority. ESTJs are suppose to be rather difficult to deal with. I'm use to STPs, but I know I've probably had run-ins and been burned off by S types.

I guess I would have assumed a J type for tanks, just because of organizational aspect.

As far as leading, yes, INTPs can, at the very least I can. If I notice the situation has gotten out of hand, I'll start directing people or picking up the slack. I've played several different MMOs, but the one I played the through the furtherthest and longest was probably Aion.

On my assassin (rogue) my part in a groupd was to hit the enemy, fast. I wasn't suppose to do anything else, but I made a lot of cleric (main heals) friends, because the tanks and sub-tanks in that game would let aggro slip (and it did a lot) and ignore or not be able to help the healer. I would try to take aggro off healers, but unless I got crit it was useless, but at least I tried (they noticed that, especially when the Sorc was standing right next to them). The healer generated aggro only a tank or sorc or other healer could pull off.

When I played chanter (buff/heals) I lead groups a few times (small groups for small missions, not dungeons). I wouldn't usually lead, but by time I got around to playing my chanter a lot I knew all the short cuts and everything.

On my cleric I didn't like leading at all, but partly because it interferred with my job. It's hard to lead and heal, because being at back means I could see everyone. I did direct people a few times at certain dungeons, because of pats and that sort of thing. I had to play motivational speaker to a few tanks, because of assholes (probably Ses) complaining about the tank being a newb and not going fast enough (they were usually assassins). But in dungeons losing a tank meant I would be getting aggro, so... I had to keep them in the game even if the assassin was going to whine about being stupid and slow and not knowing what was going on. If I didn't play sin, I would've hated them with a passion.

To me leading isn't fun, because I have to be patient with people, I also like having a placement where I can be doing my own thing.

My bro is an ISTP and he played a tank and he plays a tank/melee now (DK). ST types probably like to be in the center of the action. My bro probably didn't lead, he plays with a group of friends and in guilds. He always plays with a small group of friends or his guild, while I hate committing to guilds (need to get over that) and like pugging for the challenge in dealing with stupid accidents. Tank/melees aren't too hard to learn or to adjust as far as I know. Before the DK my bro was playing a warrior. He always plays that sort of class and he won't try extremely diffferent play styles. He's the sort that once he knows what he likes he sticks with it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." And in his case it's sometimes, "even if it is broken it can wait for another month..."

I meant for MMOs, most other types of games don't usually allow for such fine tuning. And with MMOs, RPGs that is, I become more immersed in the game's story than the actual community.

Yea I know what you mean, the hesitation. Going against an Se dom you can see the Pi vs Pe. You might think they shoot without thinking, but it's some instant information recognition vs interpretation. Like trying to see if it's a friendly or not vs not giving a damn lol.

@ Zero, last part very funny. I had a character of every class in wow. If a certain type was broke, I had something else to play, which is why I eventually went from my warrior to a DK. Also had a shaman(healer) and I was sort of bad, not good for a healer to run in front of the pug and pull aggro. I did die a lot, until my guild finally got me used to standing in the back. When I lead things it was far from organized, was more of an adventure, I never liked having Js lead, sort of killed the fun. Say for instance, Uldaman back in original wow, I had a hunter then, hated it, but my friend had a warrior, I loved it, and so I played his warrior quite a bit. I lead through that dungeon and it was great, I had no clue what I was doing, we were there for about 5 hours and no one cared, it was really fun. Also you didn't get any loot for that place back then haha.

The greatest adventure was when I made my first warrior and lead a group through Van Cleef (although I do like Shadow Fang Keep the best) for the first time I had ever been there. I had somehow skipped dungeons until lvl 30, Scarlet Monastery was the first I had ran, probably would never had discovered it if I wasn't asked to run it with some people.

Also I noticed when I wasn't tanking I would find myself as you mentioned, motivating the tank, and always by the end the tank had become really good, I would just comment of things they did that I felt was good, and whispered tips I had learned the hard way. I really believe in free share of knowledge.

Also do NTPs tend to be motivational speakers?

On the MMO subject, I've enjoyed playing with Healer classes (Specially in FlyFF) and archer classes.

The first allowed me to be useful to the group. I often called a friend, which started a party, and made her call more people to the group. I was often giving help in some caves and boss fights. I used to periodically give buffs to my party members, usually before they ask for them. Actually I even gave useless buffs, just to show that i was there. Healing was always on-time, and people always praised me as a party member. I just loathed when random people asked me for buffs/heal.

The latter allowed me to play by myself. I went exploring, and could often deal with threats in my path. In the game i played (Maplestory, for the records) archers weren't very popular as party members, as they gave no bonuses. So i often went on a quest spree, or some trips through the continent. Whenever i got into a party quest, i was always helpful by knowing what to do beforehand.

The only problem with MMOs is that when i play, I always call some friends to join. And when they do, i get into some sort of competitive mode, as I don't allow them to overlevel me, leaving me behind. That got me into serious trouble with a friend before, when I got into a bad whining mode telling that she left me behind in the game, and it was now meaningless as no one was fun to play around. Fucking 2x experience cards.

I played a Shaman to like level 26 that's probably as far as I ever got in WoW. If I do pick it up again for a little while, I'll probably play troll priest. I guess I shouldn't say my bro doesn't play other classes. He's been playing WoW for years, so I'm pretty sure he's played everything, but his main is always "warrior."

And yeah, not a motivational speaker. I couldn't stand up in front of people and seriously motivate them about real life. I would probably go on a tangent and leave people with chronic depression or activist, if I had a speaking talent... In a game it's pretty different... Besides it was something that needed to be done. As long as the tank wasn't totally clueless or idiotic they could be helped.

After trying Heals in Aion, I gotta go back to every game and see how I like them in other MMOs. It was fun, because you're needed and it's also fun when your group screws up a little...

In Flyff it was always nice if people would heal or buff... My main was a mage, but also played the yo-yo class... can't remember what it's actually called. I never got to the second/third class with either of them. For as funny and kiddy as Flyff looks, it's actually a fun F2P. I've tried the others offered by gpat, but I didn't like them. I also tried PW. The only other F2P I like I would say is Aika, but that game can get pretty boring after a while (tyg for the prans...). For some reason I can't play it anymore anyway. After taking a break I totally forgot how to play warlock. I started a cleric on Aika, but I haven't even run the first instance with her yet.

Yeah I was wondering, but no I wasn't kidding, I was actually told I should be a motivational speaker after I went on one of my rants in real life...

Edit: Apologies I have lead the topic off course, and it belongs else where, think EyeSeeCold made a thread this would go in but I need to find it.

FlyFF :D Me and my cousin tricked a clan leader into opening the clan bank and we stole everything lol.

I used to play one of the other games that debuted in like 07 from gpotato, I think Corum. I was in the highscores for awhile for combat level. It was kind of cool to start when it debuted, but I had to go through all the debugging and lags.

I guess they say taking advantage of stupid people isn't really wrong. There's always a good reason not to trust people.

Well at first he did it so we could get clan clothes (cape I think?). I got mine and my cousin messaged me and told me he stole some stuff. He then made a plan to get him to open it up again on account of not getting the clan clothes and we just took everything.

I'm normally not an opportunist but I was in the right mood.

I've trained on people before, but since I learned to play in guilds and groups, I don't do that anymore. Once you actually need a group to do shit that stuff becomes annoying when other people do it.

If I were opportunistic my mom would probably disown me. She hates opportunistic people.
