Short and to the point OP; a simple question.

Why does my brain kill itself?

I've been labeled as "Vitamin - D deficient". If I skip taking my medicine (tablets loaded with fat-soluble Vitamin D) for even a very short while, I am crippled by agonizingly painful headaches and near-blindness. These symptoms are also coupled with sluggishness - being tired all the time.

How does this happen? What makes this work?

Vitamin D is an interesting one. Those who study it - make it their life's work, think that we need a lot more than we are all getting. Especially in the developed world where we spend most of our time indoors. I take D supplements to about 500% of my RDA.

The story of D is still being discovered, it's implicated in the Calcium cycle and many other aspects of our physiology. Specifically to answer your question I don't know, you might check to see what Dr Fuhrman says as he takes a special interest in D.

It makes sense as an evolutionary aspect why Vitamin D would play such an essential (albeit somewhat mysterious) role in our lives. Organisms that originated in sun-rich environments (ie Africa) tend to have many adaptive traits to both beat the sun and make use of its energy.

For instance, take bi-pedalism; standing upright means less of the body is exposed - especially useful when you have no fur to protect from the powerful rays.

Who is Dr. Fuhrman?

Perhaps.

Search.

I believe sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D as well, perhaps less in those with a deficiency. I don't know much about it, maybe I'll look up Dr. F

Yes, it does.

My assumed problem is that my body does not do this nearly as efficiently as it should.

Based on other things you've said elsewhere I believe you have TLE (temporal lobe epilepsy). Being vitamin D deficent and having headaches is commonly associated with it. http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health-conditions/neurological-conditions/epilepsy/

Ah, my apologies. I was assuming he was a member here :)

My mistake

I don't really know why but that's pretty much the funniest thing I've ever heard on this forum. I really actually laughed out loud.

That's an ironic harbinger of intelligence for me - when someone says, I don't know. It's just nice to hear in a world replete with overbearing marketing claims and deceitful politicians (probably no difference). :^^:

Thank you. I know what I know (subject to revision), and I know what I don't know, and I don't make any bones about it.

Edit: Nice, this is my 2,000 post.

To OP: yes I understand that people produce, synthesize and absorb D differently, which is one reason Dr. F recommends a larger dose. He says similar things about Omega-3's and Omega-6's.

I don't notice any particular effects from taking the D. It's part of a particular formulation that Dr F produces. Insurance really. The only time I noticed a deficiency in my life was after many years of following a high starch based vegan diet. I became nervous and irritable. After switching to a 'nutrarian' diet - vegan but including a wider range of plant foods including nuts it balanced out.

I'm more interested in why it works than what it is.

I can see that. But really, this is a matter of why it isn't working (the brain - it's having "electric storms", of which there are 40 different known causes).

As to the Vitamin D thing, I feel your pain. I'm seriously off when I haven't had enough light, which INO is almost always. I've spent winters baking in a tanning booth for the light, not the tan. All the light bulbs in my house have been changed to full spectrum or 'blue' light bulbs. I take D3 and hang out near windows. I'd live in glass house if at all possible.
