Im just looking for idle chat about music, what kind of music do you listen to? Please share, im looking to expand my audio horizons.

I enjoy a wide range of music, classic rock, electronic, symphonic metal, epics, nearly anything with a violin/cello or guitar, and celtic music of any kind.

I hate pop, meaningless/disrespectful rap, and any shallow unimagintive electronic music that starts with a Bump ta bump ta bump ta.

Ill spare you from songs you're likely to have heard anytime recently, these are a little less mainstream.

Some of my favorites. this one is epic
https://youtu.be/6KKKGpAZHAA

This one is energetic and awesome
https://youtu.be/7eZIbmq5Jiw

I dont usually care for this kind of song, but this is somehow exceptionally imaginative and gives me bubbly energy.
https://youtu.be/nEt1bKGlCpM

Anything from the Glitch Mob just rocks, the calm transition of emotion is great, these guys got me into electronic music, tho i was reluctant at first.
https://youtu.be/4HX74UhgMFA
https://youtu.be/_iaisDkR8Qg

Lunica coil and Evanescence, are awesome. if you like them and haven't heard Nightwish 7 Days to the wolves, i fully recommend a listen
https://youtu.be/Ro0R_MxwwRs

Can't beat the classics
https://youtu.be/OI2COawqMJQ
https://youtu.be/cEj6b5ZS0tA

and just because i can, i like explosions, and League
https://youtu.be/T6EVstWcq-Q

Anyway thats my list, it barely scratches the surface and im sure i could have chosen better songs to represent what i like but, there ya have it. What's some of your favorites?

i purr to some EDM too, usually grittier tweakier stuff from before the strands of the club movement converged into a commercial colossus. acid techno, goa trance or early minimal psytrance is what i prefer. some newer IDM, gabbercore and dubstep tickles my fancy too.

listen how this all just glues together, thumping and mellow and soft and sharp. this is what i miss in mainstream electronic music today. the subtle art of EQ separation has become rigid gospel, eliminating dynamic interaction between musical elements. but however boring and predictable such sonic surgery is when applied as a standard format, i appreciate fringe elements that try and explore the grotesque limits of it..

here everything is super sharp like in modern EDM but that's the deal, that's the actual music. the angle is dystopian vision instead of disenchanted mass appeal. it speaks machine.

unless you've heard of autechre, i advise giving them a go too. not a personal favorite but immensely important. some of the music you mentioned has roots there and they are recognized as pioneers within all electronic music, much like boards of canada.

that above i guess is about my primary domain. here is my latest crush:

Dude clipper sounds like the inner workings of my brain, thanks for sharing it, i could meditate to this. It has just enough adhd factor to keep my mind on the music, i find in more routine sounding songs i just cant stay focused on the music, i anticipate it and it leaves room for my mind to wander.

Someone once hacked this forum and replaced the screen with an ASCII cat dancing to Daybreak. T'was epic.

I've been into Bird of Prey, Infected Mushroom, and Electrocado recently.

i usually avoid music focused on the vocalist because im rarely satisfied with lyrics(i find many song lyrics insincere)...but obviously, this is only a problem with songs in languages i understand.

i also enjoy a wide range of music...i listen to:

jazz
fusion jazz
ambient and shoegaze
symphonic metal
black metal
baroque
icelandic folk
enka
noise rock
industrial noise
sevdalinka
mathcore
rembetika
ethereal wave
dark wave
post-punk
old school industrial
neofolk
synthpop

i like unpredictability in music, so naturally i like a lot of what falls under the experimental genre
........

as of late im obsessed with lena chamamyan's bali maak, she has the most beautiful singing voice I've ever heard

I'm fairly limited in my musical scope, am somewhat retardedly behind the times, and am almost always stuck in a time warp. Like your self I am repelled by shallow music on all counts, and so most musical endeavors rarely make it throuh my filters. Music is a powerful tool for speaking to your subconcious, and I refuse to absorb spiritual poison.

I enjoy few artists, but the one's I do, I generally love throughout the years:

Evanescence, classsical beginnings & undertones, gothic metal, hard rock, nu metal, real instrumentals and talented vocals, independent of the mainstream.
Linkin Park, nu metal, hard rock, independant of the mainstream.n talented across all boards.
Lauryn Hill, real hip-hop, raw talent, still battling the forces of evil
Eminem, same as above. (Before he got killed & Cloned/Brainwashed-take your pick).
All of the above have recognised the spiritual battles for peoples minds via the music industry, and attempted to raise awareness on some level. (Misse a few off the list but blehh)

With that taken into account, I have a wide rock selection, bassline, drum and bass, old school reggae & hip-hop, strictly based on criteria of talent and message, if there is one.

Everytime I tune into the charts, all I see is Thelemite, OTO, devil worship, sex magic, wannabe gansters singing about how much they sold their souls for.... I've asked my friends why it is they enjoy that sort of music and aspire to be them, when in fact their favorite artists are singing about lifesyles they will *never* experience... Everyone I've asked shrugged their shoulders. Mindless eejits.

Really now? Are we going to affix something arbitrary like music taste to intelligence? Plus listing eminem doesn't exactly help sustain your position(imo ofc :))

The kind of music that someone listens to and relates with can show insights to how the inner subconscious works. Theres a study done on that somewhere, ill post it when i find it again.

As far as eminem goes tho, some of his music is thoughtless and shallow, but some others are very deep and meaningful if you pay attention to the words. I consider eminem one of the few rappers i enjoy, as his music doesn't induce instant headaches and sudden loss in my faith in humanity.

Can't be bothered doing any more currently, will spam more later.

Please do! i loved nearly every song you posted. Thanks a ton

Evanescence,
Linkin Park

Behind the times? Nah, I mean I used to listen to these guys in.... middle school.

Okay so maybe you're pretty behind the times :D

.

My musical interests range across a broad kaleidoscope which somehow all gets boiled down into the label "indie rock" (it's amazing how many different sounds are "indie")

My most recent obsessions involve a fair amount of experimental neo-psychedelia and also some garage/punk stuff.

Goat. Wikipedia describes them as "Experimental rock, hard rock, fusion, afrobeat, worldbeat, acid rock"
https://youtu.be/RKZBYkw0YwY

Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Wikipedia: "Indie rock, psychedelic pop, psychedelic rock, R&B, garage rock, Lo-fi music"
https://youtu.be/EIg8hbFrpUU

Foxygen. "Psychedelic pop, garage rock, gospel, Baroque pop"
https://youtu.be/w3yTsz90FvU

Fidlar. "Skate punk, garage punk, garage rock, surf rock, indie rock"
https://youtu.be/BYbJmQj5VkE?t=50

The King Khan & BBQ Show. "Garage rock, Garage punk, Rock and roll" These guys oddly enough put off a vibe that always reminds me of Chuck Berry for some reason. Some of that classic Rock and roll guitar work, I think.
https://youtu.be/ellItasoK2s

together PANGEA. Wikipedia doesn't have a handy genre list, but they're some of your standard indie/punk rock.
https://youtu.be/995IchHBm2Q

Mac DeMarco. My friend just turned me on to him. Wikipedia says "DeMarco has mentioned Shuggie Otis, Steely Dan, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Jonathan Richman as favourite artists. His guitar-based compositions have moved from glam-inspired works to what reviewers describe as “off-kilter pop”. DeMarco has labelled his style as “jizz jazz.” "

How are you today
I hope there isn't a link limit or anything…
Anyway, a couple of videos summing up my music tastes. All are very different, except possible the two by explosions in the sky so don't skip it purely for different music purposes.
Reign of Kindo - Favorite band as of now. All there music is similar, but very different also. They mimic several genres but at the same time the music is nothing like it.

Explosions In The Sky - One of key bands that describes the genre of post-rock.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzIK5FaC38w
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqChTn4PNuA
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Pianist. Songs are interesting and relaxing respectively. Hadn't heard anything like it prior.

Local Natives - Idk.

Lost Ocean - Yummy.

This Day and Age - Also yummy.

@INTPWolf, wow OVERWERK is great. Needed that. as I mainly like high energy EDM. I also like non-african/ghetto sounding female singing pop, dance, house, new age, classical.

My all time favorite two songs that stood the test of time, so nothing more current. Strong emotion changers for me, if I actually need that.

https://youtu.be/V3MStWmq7Rs

And one that desperatly needs a complete remix, re-imagination, something to update it. Until then it souns best really loud.

Explosions in the Sky is nice. I tend to listen to instrumental music just to relax. Tbh anything that resonates is good music. I like trying to figure out what a song is about, deciphering music videos is a hobby of mine.

But anyway if you want music you can "mellow out" or 'purr to' or whatever, here's a couple out of the top of my head:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEaJOQ0shj0 and..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wep_U0QOhOs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pru3xkeLY0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBqF0Dt2de0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WNzVqK48Mg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=how-NwlHK3Y
I couldn't find the particular cover I was looking for, but this one's good too. ^ The original's below. The original YOLO >.> (and one of my, if not the, most favorite song)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztccvaZ9_7k

Er damn, there's a crap ton more I'd like to share tbh. I grew up mostly listening to more grungyish-mellow-instrumental types of music. Radiohead, Sufjan Steven, Nujabes, the Strokes, Weezer. I think I was sort of into Coldplay and Maroon 5 as well and and some other non-mainstreams, like Bloc Party
and Los Campesinos and Saves the Day. If anyone's interested in experimental indie they should check out Of Montreal. More mellow bands are like Beirut and Death Cab for Cutie. As far as pure instrumentals, Sufjan is good, and I'd recommend a Japanese duet band called Depapepe. Mogawi and Explosions in the Sky are great too. Then there's the Neutral Milk Hotel, the Decemberists, Vampire Weekend, and Animal Collective, though they're all a bit more voice-indie-centricish. Somewhat more niche-indie groups are Discovery and Apples in Stereos and this Korean indie group called Glen Check.
From here I'd venture into Kpop and Jpop but I'll stop here. The fun thing about music is that it isn't only the music that you have to appreciate. The cultural milieu in which the music is born is fun to understand as well. Cultural attitudes of certain peoples, their views, their expression of emotion, wording symbolisms.. once the context in where the song is born is understood, the more the alive the song becomes. The lyrics are super important as well; the allusions, alliterations, imagery.. and so on.

Anyway I think that's good enough memory dumping for now. I haven't gotten into new music though, I'm going through classical phase at the moment. I don't necessarily have a preference now either, I try to listen as much as possible. Once I've gotten older I started to appreciate R&B, rap, hip pop and jazz, as well as general pop. They're all just different styles to express the same variety of emotions, after all.

holy christ I went on an Ne rampage didn't I :phear:...:D

btw OP, there is a music section on the forum o:

I have simple tastes. I like things from different genres, and nothing is counted out entirely. What makes me purr depends on what I want at the moment.

Right now, this does the trick
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4ElZ0Qu7lI

Most of the time, I either want something aimless and slightly cacophonic (like modern classical, anti-folk, and the stuff Salmoneus gave us), or I want something with a strong percussion backbone and a reasonable level of energy (found just about every genre, but it has to "catch" me). Occasionally, I want a wall of sound in any combination of the other two (like the song above, Death Cab, King Crimson, Zappa, etc.)

I know that these groupings make no sense to anyone else. The names Julia and Lauren sound the same to me. They belong together.

My musical tastes have broadened considerably since my youth, when I was only into metal, hard rock, grunge, etc. Really, the only genre I haven't given a fair shake is rap music, but I listen to pretty much a little bit of everything: rock, hard rock, metal, jazz, classical, opera, country, pop, electronic, and a few others. I often arrange playlists that have such a variety of genres that do not go together that it seems futile to list anything more specific here.
