I thought it would be great if there was a general purpose thread where people could recommend genres, artists, albums, or songs and hopefully state why they like or recommend them.

I've occasionally made favorites from the "What songs are you listening to?" thread, and some other threads, but those aren't necessarily people's suggestions.

East of the mountains.
For enjoying music with vocals without putting importance on the lyrics, Ladytron. Especially the Witching Hour album.

Also, for enjoying pop music with vocals in a language you don't understand, Yelle. I guess that's only valid if you don't understand French.

These are both examples of why I always say that the lyrics are less important than the sound of the human voice, usually, at least.

I guess I recommend Ladytron more than Yelle, but I do recommend finding some 'foreign' pop music that you enjoy.

Teebs & Jackhigh - The Tropics EP

It's experimental/electronic music with a fluffy hypnotic feel mostly similar to Flying Lotus(especially on Los Angeles). The songs are fairly short, easy to sample.

That place somewhere.
Ayreon... The vocals can be a little bit campy at times but it's still amazing Sci-fi/space metal.
Very unique sound;
Each song sounds different;
Tells a very unique and interesting story;
Incorporates both space and history;
Content is intellectually appealing;
Even during slow parts the lyrics hold my attention;
Perfect music for telescoping;
Conceived primarily by one amazing guy in the Netherlands.

An Example:
(I recommend you listen to the whole thing before judging.)

Also this is my first post, so hi!

Funk/Jazz artists:

Fred Wesley - and pretty much anything Fred Wesley collaborates on. Guy has a 6th sense for groove, as far as I'm concerned he's the under-appreciated king of Funk/Soul. Also the stuff he does as, "Fred Wesley and the New JB's"

Case in point...

Marcus Miller (bass)
Tony Williams (drums)
Jaco Pastorius (bass)
Billy Cobham (drums)
Jean-Luc Ponty (elec. violin)
Elvin Jones (drums)
Poogie Bell (mostly a 'sideman' drummer, has his own group too)
Peter Erskine (drums)
Patches Stewart (trumpet)
George Duke (keys)
The Apples (band) - they're kind of a different take on Funk, I think they blend the new and old really well.
John McLaughlin (guitar)
Miles Davis (trumpet)

Honourable mentions for musicians who are younger and have more recently come onto the scene, who are just killing it:

Louis Cato (drums)
Alex Han (saxophone)
Adam Agati (guitar)

I could list hundreds of musicians really in this category...these are just the ones off the top of my head. I guess this is a relatively broad range, if you look up these guys and then start to take note of all the related acts in between...you'll discover tons of other amazing musicians.

Rock/Metal bands/musicians:

Morgan Agren (drums)
Meshuggah
Clutch
Primus
Tool
Opeth
Soen

To who? I mean i have been asked about Dream Theater by two folks in a conversation and I recommended one record for the big Rush fan and another for the big Iron Maiden fan.

I have a bunch of proto metal bands i think highly of but that takes a very particular person for me to give a recommendation. I have a friend that likes nearly the same music I like but I never recommend Metal to him as our tastes differ on points only someone really into Metal would notice. Power vs Progressive metal never seemed so far appart.

If you like soft quiet music I can generally say Sandy Denny is fantastic as is Nick Drake.

But recommending Voivod, whom i love, isn't going to happen. No one ever likes them when i suggest them. Safer to say hey Holy Grail or Tytan are good metal bands.

Well the original intent was to allow people to recommend awesome music they think should be heard, but I suppose people can also ask for and receive specific suggestions here too.

But recommending Voivod, whom i love, isn't going to happen. No one ever likes them when i suggest them. Safer to say hey Holy Grail or Tytan are good metal bands.
Yeah not everything is going to be a hit, though it helps potential fans to say why you like a band or to describe their sound/style.

I can't speak highly enough about the one man, musical therapy band known as holy sons.
Emil Amos writes, records, produces and plays everything on each record. The only exception is when he may bring a friend on to play a violin part or something.

I think that holy sons will appeal to a lot of people on this forum.

His lyrics are just amazing, in this persons opinion. Even if you don't place too much importance on lyrics you will more than likely find something in there you like as the music can very often be a tad "out there" and there is enough just in the execution in and of itself that's interesting.

Every record is tied to each other with common themes though listening to them individually, they are harmonically quite different, as well as the techniques that he used to create/record each record are different.

If you find ANY of his music even remotely interesting I highly suggest listening or reading some interviews with him. He's really a philosopher at heart I would say, and always seems to have some new insight into music, entertainment (or like thereof) or just life in general.

I'm not big on labels so it's best to let the man speak for himself about each of his records and then that can help you decide which you would like to check out.

Here's his site, just click on records and he gives a few paragraphs about each one.

Www.holysons.com

He has also, very kindly, uploaded most of his records to

holysons.bandcamp.com

Oh, another thing, he plays in a few other bands that are pretty amazing too, though holysons is my favorite. He also plays in:

Grails (desert psych instrumental eastern influenced progressive rock)
Om (made up of a former Sleep band member on bass with Emil on drums. Very heavy and meditative, as the name might suggest)
Lilacs and Champagne (from their labels website. As the producing-team behind’Grails, Alex Hall and Emil Amos have hybridized and warped various culture’s versions of psych music over the past decade. With their new project Lilacs and Champagne, they’ve created another umbrella under which to tweak hip-hop, tape-collage and the darkest creases of 70′s film-soundtracks with their lysergic and perverse style of head-music.)

Enjoy!

Edit: he also makes these very cool lo-fi videos from time to time for holy sons and the various other bands he plays in.
