Multiple personality types?

I recently retook the MBTI to see if I would get an answer other than INTP. Just as I had suspected nothing had changed. But it got me thinking: people often hide behind a "mask" of sorts while they're with other people (I know I do), so what personality do I have when I'm with other people? I put myself in the mindset I'm in while around a group of people and retook the test. It turns out I was right about hiding behind a mask: the result I got after retaking the test was not INTP but instead ENFP. I read up on the profile and it seemed to match my outgoing self pretty well. Does this happen to you guys? What personality do you have while in public, or do you stay INTP?

This has been on my mind aswell. I am an INTP (when alone) but when I am with others I often exhibit ENFP traits. I even feel like I am other personality types such as INFP or ENTP depending on the friend that I am with.
Does anyone know why this is?

My only theory is that I mirror certain opposite traits of people subconsciously to either relate to them, or compliment their weaknesses. For example, i have an INTJ friend who is quite rude and unconcerned with others. Because of his personality, I am similar to an ENFP around him to make up for his shyness and rudeness.

You basement
Everyone plays several roles. You just dont notice because they are consistent with their roles around you or in certain places.

I understand this feeling. I went a good while thinking I was INTJ (like 7-10 years ago) because I was answering according to how I behaved most of the time, rather than my behavior when unburdened.

If I were to test today, say, for how I have to be at work, I'd get ... oh ffs ... someone give TMB a cookie, I got ENFJ.

Anyway, we are who we are, not the hats we have to wear.

It's all relovertheplaceative.

Prior to finding INTPf I would score relatively consistently INFJ.

After spending some time lurking then interacting on INTPf I started to score INTP.

Took a couple weeks off work. Been spending less time poring over INTPf and more time left to my own devices and whatever is going on in my mind. Retested tonight and scored INFJ.

I'm seeming an INTP when I'm around a lot of people, but when I'm around my friends I get extraverted to them only.

This could be. I do it IRL. I've been in type denial for a few weeks from hanging out here. ;)

I'm curious why people understand this in terms of acting like another type vs using the specific cognitive functions of their type. For example, it can be said that Fe is concerned with achieving and maintaining external harmony, in which case the following is certainly Fe in action:
I am similar to an ENFP around him to make up for his shyness and rudeness.

I'm seeming an INTP when I'm around a lot of people, but when I'm around my friends I get extraverted to them only.

I become extroverted when I'm around people where I can actually express my strongly N self in some way. Like I can talk about Art or Programming or Politics or something of actual consequence to me. Around bulk masses of people, I am introverted, because what they say doesn't have a lot of importance and is boring to me. I'm not inherently interested in their chit-chat, although I can play the game of social graces to an extent. Only so long though; if nothing emerges that I can actually lock onto and find interesting, I'm going to seek to escape.

I have at times tried to entertain the exercise of initiating and leading a conversation towards directions I personally would like it to go. Such as talking about things that interest me. Problem is that in the real world, crickets usually chirp. Attempted over and over again for thousands of times, this becomes disheartening. So I become gunshy and stop trying. I am often likely to look for subtle cues about a person, indicators that they will or won't respond "the boring" way to things. This makes me a lot less investigative than I used to be when I was younger.

But hey I am older now, and how much do I have to keep beating my head against people's human limitations? I go back and forth about this. Sometimes I merely think, yep, I've got people sussed, people who exhibit cue X are boring. Other times I think you don't really know that, you haven't adequately tested that, you're just using it as a defense mechanism against having your energy wasted as usual.

Particularly comes up when trying to talk to random women that I'm sexually attracted to. Like, oh god, here we go again. World would be a lot easier if we didn't have to try to make mental links in order to fuck. You may say that reality actually exists out there somewhere, but it certainly hasn't been true in my experience. Whatever cues they're looking for to save energy, I don't seem to have been providing them.

Wonder if I need to attend a convention of rationals, like an atheist convention or something.
