Just curious guys, but I am INTP and a friend of mine is as well. Something I have noticed is that we tend to pretend to be one way but there is a completely different dimension to us within ourselves....the INTP. I wasn't sure if this was an INTP. I know that INTP's are supposed to be monotone, quiet thinkers, but is it possible to think and show that yourself as someone you are not?

An example so this will not look like I am referring to being two faced. Both are my true personalities...they just don't take place at the same time. Sometimes, I am either energetic, happy, and a goofball, or I am completely quiet. I adjust depending on who I am around. The strange part is, I maintain my internal monologue/thought both times. I still analyze everyone in the room, I still have about 100 other ideas going through my head. Because of this, I often confuse people because they assume I am an idiot (granted, I can act like one sometimes). If they were to see me in front of a computer, or talking about business plans to one of my colleagues, they would think me to be a different person.

I understand exactly what you mean. Some people have gone as far as to call me bipolar, (which is inaccurate) but it all depends on what I am doing at the time and who I am around.

EEEAAAARRRGGHHHH GODZZIIIIIRRRRRRAAA!!1!

I'm fairly certain acting differently around different people is quite normal. It may be more pronounced in INTPs however, because (and this is purely speculation) INTP's generally judge friends on individual merit, not entire groups. This means that although you may have friends, they don't all hang with you at once, and therefore you have not had to develop a consistent manner which appeases all parties simultaneously.

I'm on the fly here so don't go hatin' on ma grama or whatev, from what I can see the theory is solid though possibly unfounded. Thoughts?

You may be an introvert, but able to act like an extrovert, while still expending energy in your interactions.

Introvert has more to do with how much of your inner thoughts you share & how you pick the people you do want to share them with ... you may seem extrovert without being one. Sometimes life seems a bit of a stage you have to learn to be able to take.
I am able to do the chit chat thing if I have to. I am able to adapt in interaction and leaping out of flow if I see it is wasted. But I hate to and loose energy in an instant.

In interaction with some people I get an immense amount of energy. When I discover shared ground.

+ I agree with Dr. Freeman

Yeah, I have the same. I think it might be a protection mechanism of the INTP.
I hide myself behind a cynical, sarcastic observing person making mean comments all the time usually. When I'm with my best friends I become all goofy and annoying, and when I'm with a girl I like I become the most ridiculously soft and caring guy ever.

I think I also started a related thread about this a while ago, it's an interesting phenomenon. I can't seem to turn this off because it makes me feel way too vulnerable. It's annoying though because I constantly have the feeling nobody really knows me. I met an INTJ girl a while ago, who thinks I'm very 'mysterious' and it frustrates her even though I'm trying to be as open as I can be. Apparently a lot of the things I say come as a surprise to her. (This is not the girl I like by the way... Although she is a nice girl.)

Generally, I show him the energetic, happy, and sarcastic personality. I usually throw ideas at him as he is one of the few that can usually understand. I don't usually care about his opinion on the matter, but he listens anyway. Occasionally, he will find an inconsistency I missed and I can correct it. I'm not very thorough as my Ne needs some work. I back everything with logic, but often do not consider all possibilities....I then miss an obvious one and screw up. The exact reason I am decent, but not GOOD at chess.

Stupid mistakes...how i hate thee.

NOTE: After rereading this, I sound extremely ADD on this post...

That's interesting, I too find myself showing an energetic/happier personality to certain friends I connect with intellectually.
