Hi. I'm a few months in college now and I need you're advice, because I noticed, that I don't really like logic, math, science. I feel strong craving to art in last time. Restarted playing guitar, drawing, playing more games, meet more people, thinking about write sci-fi book and about wandering close nature.

What's wrong with my Ti? It was working quite good for my whole life, since I was deconstructing every toy what I was, because I was curious how it works, then always was bored in school because everything was too easy, then became ultra-loner for three years, and now something is changing... I have extremely strong drive to create something, very, very strong.

So math, algebra, logic, algorythm, programming, chess, and more activities which require a lot of thinking don't interest me. Also learning, I mean reading science books, what was interesting a few months ago, now is horrid.

I'm also sad about my currently life, and want something different. I don't know what and why, but I want change (but I had a lot of changes latly! ).

Maybe it's something with my age (20) ?

Nothing's wrong with your Ti, you sound like a normal INTP.

From what I see there are two kinds of INTP's, Humanities (Ne) dominant and Science (Ti) dominant. Examples

Ne Focused INTP's

  • Larry David
  • Jim Parsons
  • Paul Wolfowitz
  • John Baldessari (probable INTP)
  • David Keirsey (the father)
  • A.J. Drenth

Notice however that these Humanities INTP's are still very analytical people - so Ti is there but just more hidden.

Ti Focused INTP's
  • Albert Einstein
  • Immanual Kant
  • William James
  • Carl Jung (OK there's debate as to what he was but I believe INTP)
  • David Keirsey (the son)

Mixed: Me (let me know if you have any other examples)

I think INTP's will tend to fall more into the humanities when they're young, because science is more factual (Se) based rather than theory at that age. It takes some maturity and education before they can get to the theory.

This plays out with the four INTP's I know. My one friend from Hungary fell into science engineering and never left. My other friend went into the humanities (got a classical education. My son and I are mixed - I started out in the humanities (music) and feeling that my "thinking needed work" (this was before I knew MBTI) I went into science, so I've played both sides of that street. My son wants to go into science/engineering, but frankly he likes humanities much more now.

Looking at our functional stack the answer is clear, Ti focused INTP's are predominantly in their dominant, and humanities work more through their aux. That's certainly the case from comparing myself back then and now. I actually developed Ti from becoming a Physicist and working as an engineer.

Now, AJ Drenth claims that INTP's are generally happiest when they can live in the space between Ti and Ne. That's true for me, I work during the day while doing Ti (programming) and listening to classical music (Ne/Fe) almost the entire day. I can't really do one without the other for long periods of time.

At any rate, you can "be" (develop) anybody you want to be. Ideally you do this before you're 18, but I'm still developing at 48 and expect to never really stop that process.

The final thought is that "interest" in INTP's is highly fickle. Don't trust it, it changes. I'd guess that if you're not interested in STEM then actually your Ne isn't opening enough to explore them. Remember Ti stays hidden, it's off thinking, it needs Ne to be open to things and feed it.

Sometimes you dabble into algorithms and stuff when you are just tryna be artsy.

I had one of those quarter-life crisis... you should follow your heart or you'll suffer from some sort of mild depression at least.

Don't box yourself in too. You usually just spill all over the place and come about where you need to be eventually.

What do you consider as the distinction between science and humanities? You mention Immanuel Kant, he was a philosopher more than anything. Usually philosophy is in the realm of humanities.

Science to me consists of the natural sciences (physics, biology), formal(math, comp sci) and social(economics). Humanities is everything else art, history, philosophy, psychology ect..

Nowadays, but Philosophy was science before science. Philosophers were the first "natural scientists". At any rate I take the two buckets broadly, I am really classifying as "Ti focused" versus "Ne focused". Clearly Kant was a Ti focused philosopher. I changed the post to make that clearer.

OK makes sense. I guess a Ti focused INTP would concern itself with establishing principles and structure, while a Ne focused would look at it more holistically establishing critiques or broad explanations. Compare A.J. Drenth to William James. Both interested in psychology, but James was all about establishing theories(Ti) while Drenth focuses more on it's elaboration(Ne).

Except that Ne is about taking in information, not elaborating it AFAIK. I get your point though.

I'm using the buckets in a very general sense, just as some INTP's are very analytical, hardheaded, decisive and narrowly focused (T), and others more fuzzy, open ended and open to a variety of ideas (N).

I must be Ne-focused INTP then. I must say, that last time I was trying to be more similar to ENTPs. So developing functions is not only possible, but it is also very fast process.

I have already well developed Fe, because my mother is Fe-dominant, and for my whole life she was developing my Fe. It's still good thing to develop Ti and Ne.

But, is there any sense of developing Si?

EDIT: I already have read Architect's topic "Triggering INTP flow". It's now reasonable to take care about Si.

Take a look at the last post. After sleeping on it I've got some insight. I don't know that you need to develop Si so much as use it. Specifically, use it's ability to focus on particular physical information. That seems to set up a loop to feed Ne and Ti such that your top three functions are getting fed.

I postulate that this has very little to do with the cognitive functions and more to do with you simply not taking a liking to the hard sciences.

This to me sounds like a bunch of attribution bias. Don't underestimate your situation. Think about why you did all these things back then. Was it because you wanted to prove something to yourself? Was it that the education system had ingrained this idea of academic restriction into your head? Well, whatever the case, you are in college now and you have regained the freedom you were given at birth, but now as a trained man you ask, "Is it okay if I dislike these things that I've been told to enjoy?"

The shackles have been broken off so why are you trying to put them back on? It's because you're accustomed to doing so.

Pursue your interests and your desired lifestyle. Don't let the shackles from the past bog you down.

Somehow you think exactly what I thought. I already grouped 2 kinds of INTP like above and apperantly it may devine more, up to 4, 8 types. INTP inception?

On-topic: sound quite normal INTP to me. INTP is the most creative type in MBTI I believe since we can analyze in many abstract model way. The Ni dominant function types are very creative too(INFJ, INTJ). But their creative is different from INTP. They tend to through-out understanding the core of things, the original, while INTP tend to find a unique way, discover something new and unique from their creative talent.

This is actually my exact situation, I'm 20 as well, and on top of all of the creativity and nature stuff, I am far more interested in psychology and the science behind the way the mind works in terms of behaviours and such than any 'proper science' like physics and chemistry.
