Do you have a mentor? How did you get one? I would like one.

Don't know. Would (and still) have appreciated one too. I think lacking one its very hard for you to know how much your knowledge and ability measures up in reality. You fall into the trap of despair or overconfidence (which can then lead to despair). I've gone through that cycle several times.

I don't know that the people who would best be mentors know how to do it themselves. My ex tried to convince me to do Big Brother, and I admit that its becoming increasingly likely I will at some point. Someone has to break the cycle of forced individualism.

Beware of False Mentors!

My college had "advisors" that were supposed to serve as Mentors. Mine sucked and because I took his advice I chose the wrong course of action. I think that good mentors are probably rare, but certainly worth searching for, no matter what stage of life one is at. I always saw a Mentor as being a Master Craftsman of some sort willing to take on a "green' apprentice...

EDIT: afterthought - there is an interesting social role known as "Internship" I think that internship offers the opportunity to develop under the supervision and guidance of a Mentor, at least, in the better instances. So seek for someone competent that is looking for an Intern...

I don't have one, but I would've liked one in someway. Someone who could help me develop my critical mind and tell me how enjoyable knowledge is. I didn't figure that out before I was like 20, school almost ruined it for me. S/he wouldn't have to be a mentor per se. Just someone who would challenge my way of thinking every now and then. It doesn't take much. Perhaps it would have helped me to decide who I want to be. I don't have a role model, and figuring out what I want to be is hard. Sometimes I want to be a selfish cynic, other times I want to be more mature (?) than that. My only mentors are my thoughts. They are terrible mentors.

I wouldn't expect much from a commercial internship. In far more than half the instances I'm aware of coming out of my Masters program it was a farce. The stated purpose was mentor-ish, but the reality is that companies don't have to hire an intern after the pre-determined period expires. Its too tempting as a hiring mechanism to keep HR departments from exploiting it, and the truth is that you often won't know the difference until you actually start.

As a means of getting work experience its great, but for the most part it is not mentorship.

Im old and a INTP. Would love to mentor another INTP.

Have had two, and I learned more from them than I care to explain.

Know why?

They were COMPLETLEY DIFFERENT than me.

We always assume its going to be this person JUST like us, albiet older. Its not. Its a person that trancends your gifts.

I will either mentor as many as I can, or spell out how to find a suitible mentor.

Life can be understood. Its better felt, and then understood.

^I definitely agree with you, bluesquid. The people who have really shown me things in my life, really led me to revelations and made me a better person, did so by being very different from me in particular ways.

I am resurrecting this archaic thread because in many great fantasy novels, the main characters have wise old mentors, and I really like the whole idea.

Now I just need to find myself a wise old mentor...

Do you want to be a main character on the INTPf?
Is that what your message means?

I wouldn't make a very good INTPf main character: something about the fact that I am not on INTPf often enough...

I don't keep track of how often you log in.
My mistake for not knowing.

That's quite all right. If you keep replying I'm going to become a great main character indeed...

How do the main characters get mentors in your books?

Not by looking for one, that's for sure.

I've had one or two during year 7 - 12, usually teachers who challenged the curriculum or valued critical thought. I'd still consider them friends some 7 years later.

The school I'm in right now (which is probably the same thing as what most of you call college) Do not have a mentor program. One of the teachers offered me to be his mentor though. I guess he sensed that I really respected him, and thought he was cool. I don't use cool, as in "wow that toy is cool" But to express that I think he's very relaxed, not very 'tight' and very open minded.

And like your mentor(s) Hado, he values critical thought and my thesis+antithesis = synthesis approach, to right about everything. So I accepted his offer, and I don't regret it. We have some very interesting conversations.

wow. I think it is so extreme important to have a menthor, and a role model. and it is also very great to have a master-mind group (like it is described in the book think and grow rich) and to surround yourself with likeminded induviduals. best all of them. but I have only a role model. l m looking foreward to find the others.

is anyone from swizerland too? maybe we can help another to find for another the successmodels, or at least like mindet people.

ps: has anyone readed think and grow rich from napoleon hill?

greetz from switzerland
