An idea I was fiddling around with in another thread was the idea of testing for specific functions- Ti/Te vs simply T- and simply throwing them in the order of preference. I mean, if you look at socionics.us, it's mixing theory, but they have the differences between Te and Ti clearly delineated (and all the rest too). Some of the socionics shorthand is hard to put into more practical terms- I mean, what do you do with "external static of fields" (Ti) v. "external dynamics of objects" (Te)?- but once you can, they can make the differences between, say, and INTP and INTJ very clear with looking at only one or two functions because the differences between the I/E manifestations of a functions are rather large. Also, if it's done by function, then you can toss aside the theoretical function selection and see what sort of functions truly tend to cluster, and recreate theory from there.

((Links: http://www.socionics.us/theory/information.shtml
http://intjforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17 [the first four stickied threads flesh out the conceptions and differences between E/I forms, although most of them don't come to a clear cut definition]))

However, that aside, I'd still like a closer look at Step II before tossing theory away. ^^ The samples I looked at for a detailed description of MBTI Step II results seemed to describe a more personal pattern nicely, although rather briefly, and indeed continued on to state what sorts of things one should take into consideration in different situations based on the results for each facet, rather than simply the preference.
