What exactly does it mean to "make connections?" I keep hearing this phrase and I'm not sure I know it what it means. How do you know if you do it?

What does it mean for a person to be scientific? I mean this in terms of someone who isn't actively involved scientific work. This is to apply to someone's personal life.

For me, most connections are utilitarian. If I can identify a use for them/something they're good at, then they're worth interacting with. Emotional connections are few and far between, and are reserved for those who repeatedly demonstrate a willingness to do things that benefit me without me asking, or often, without me even expecting it.

*EDIT: Scientific? I can't help but associate that with actual scientists. Otherwise the next closest thing that comes to mind is Kellert's typology. http://www.csun.edu/~vcpsy00h/students/barbara.htm

A scientistic attitude towards people would be a primary interest in the attributes and functioning of people.

I think she's probably talking about Ne. I would have to say that in this context "making connections" refers to discovering unseen or previously nonexistent patterns in objective data.

like people connections or idea connections? pardon me but that's not clear to me. either way it seems you're talking about some kind of euphemistic jargon, amirite?

idea connections: it's about analogies and extrapolation.

people connections (networking): it's about... abandoning dignity? :o

Would it be fair to bridge the people vs information/idea gap with utilitarianism? 'cause that's how I work...

Just run around with your fists in front of you; you'll sure make a connection sooner or later.

EDIT: on a serious note I believe it to be being in the know. E.g. A job comes up but you already know or have a 'connection' with the employer you'll more than likely get the job.

Scientific is your regime, your life philosophy, you don't have to work actively in the research area to use the scientific method or logic.

Making connections? I would say that it is making soft and hard dependencies, in some situations people with soft dependencies on you might choose to help you, or you could always count on those with hard dependencies based on their ability of course.

Emotional connections would be desiring the person and not the outcome that this person is able to create, or the outcome somehow involves this person as a partial or total goal.

Let me attempt to clarify. I''m using "making connections" as seeing an underlying connection between systems, ideas, etc. But what does this actually mean? Analogies? Seeing similarities? I also watch Doctor Who and it is mentioned in throughout the newer series as a sign of "being clever." I keep coming across it when I read articles about INTP, INTJ, IQ, giftedness, etc. Sometimes I say X is similar to Y and the person with whom I am speaking doesn't get it.

I ask about being scientific because a friend of mine described herself as being "very scientific," to which I really wanted to call BS. Wikipedia and believing the first website you read is not scientific. It's one of those things I recognize the absence of, but have no clear definition for it.

Just simply seeing things in their relation to each other.
It's sometimes difficult to communicate why X and Y share common qualities.
Plato's analogy of the cave can tell you a story about being unable to replicate an idea that is very clear in your head in another person.
If you read it under that premise.
If you read it under the premise of mainstream academia, you'll get the usual result.

Let me attempt to clarify. I''m using "making connections" as seeing an underlying connection between systems, ideas, etc. But what does this actually mean?

Example:
As someone who makes connections, clarification was not needed. We are on an INTP forum. You mentioned science, which has little to do with relationships on more intimate level anyways. Many personality tests talk about making connections in reference to "False Relations" and many discussions on Ne talk about it. We are on an INTP forum and you said this phrase was used a lot on this forum. Making connections is an Ne thing and there are a lot of Ne people here. Should I point out more connections?

* False Relations - Meant to describe the process of finding many relations to an object idea or concept but many may not be practical or they have not been validated or may not be true. ie. "INTP might all be good at computers and math. Let met test this..."

There is no giftedness, only your sense of self-worth. Everything is connected, it is very difficult not to see the most obvious systems. However agents are just as important as systems here.

You don't need to clearly define your understanding of your friend in one term, why would you? People wrongly attribute many things, for example being scientific, I think making one thread to encompass all of these will require less work. If you judge your friend is bs, maybe she is maybe not, it would be bs to call bs bs without un-bs amount of evidence and leads. Then, why would it matter? BS sources of information usually provide bits that can be used.

Isn't loose association, associated with artistic logic?

Like OrcaNerd (lol:)) talking about comparing x to y and not being understood

It can be but if the connections are so off the wall or in left field the person may just look loony!

I clarified since some thought I meant interpersonal connections.

I was merely conveying what I was reading that used the term. The subject of giftedness is what made me question if I really understood the concept of making connections, since I think I do and cannot imagine not doing so. These articles always make it sound like it’s some rare genius phenomenon.

Also, I didn't intend to sum up my friend, with whom I lived for 2.5 years, in a single word. It is simply one aspect of her very large personality. This probably comes across as more defensive than I mean for it.

None taken, I assure you! Is artistic logic a nice way of saying "actually not that logical at all?" Sort of like creative spelling used to describe those who cannot spell. LOL

I noticed :)

I just took the opportunity to use a fresh example of what it means to "make connections". I suppose I did it in a way that could be viewed as elevating myself above those who did not understand what you were asking. Such a thing would be childish and arragont on my part. Granted I do have of some of such traits in me but I am not so dim witted that I would not realize such actions would only put me in a negative light instead of elevating me.

No I actually mean artistic logic like-

Have you ever been improvising and creating something, or even just planning a creation and fully making connections that aren't even there (that you can't explain, and don't want to, but feel). It's like just projecting -(This means this!) what you want on the sounds, and it feels true and so right.
? If you haven't you might not know what I'm talking about.
Does anyone here know this state?

That's what I mean by artistic logic. Maybe it is the ultimate fusion of intuition and abstraction. The result is fluidity... Or at least the feeling or fluidity, or flow, or feeling it.

I was wondering if the consensus was loose association and the act of creating art were considered related.

Someone once told me I suffered from loose association. May unlikely have been a pyschologist. I was very young. Can't remember the context but I didn't understand how they possibly thought that was a bad thing.

See the last section on this page: https://classes.lt.unt.edu/Summer_MA_2013/CECS_5420_080/jdp0069/assign2/levels.html

The description there of synoptical reading does justice to, I think, a fairly high level of "making connections."

Thanks! I like that description.

I do this quite often. I can't share these ideas with anyone because most of my friends are sensors and just tell me I am wrong or ask for a clear step-by-step explanation and then tell me I am wrong because I cannot spell it out for them. I like to paint and so does my husband's grandmother. She is far more talented than I and does realism. I suck, so I attempt realism and produce childish impressionism, but my subjects are abstract, such as a brain prism. She asks me to explain them and I can't do much better than, "I dunno, it just seemed like a neat idea."
