For some odd reason, I have a craving to start receiving magazines to read from time to time. So, I was wondering if anyone had recommendations. Any ideas and reasoning are welcome. Topics of interest are as follows:

  • Science & Technology
  • Psychology
  • Gaming of all sorts (board, card, video, theory)
  • History
  • Guitar/Music
  • Programming/Software Design/Web Design/Game Design
  • Philosophy
  • Spirituality from an open viewpoint (not biased towards a particular organized religion)

For science I recommend either Science or Nature. I've had subscriptions to both in the past and preferred Nature, not really sure why though. They also have a lot of smaller mags for sub-disciplines, although some require credentials as a grad student or researcher. I know I couldn't get a copy of Nature Physics, but was able to get one to Nature Chemistry.

For game design there's Game Developer Magazine, which is run by the same people that do the Gamasutra website. The most interesting part is their "post-mortem" section which is written by the developers of a recent game and has a format of "5 things we did right, 5 things we did wrong." (plus other commentary)

For general game stuff you can get a sub to Game Informer if you sign up for the membership at Gamestop ($15), which will usually pay for itself in discounts if you buy enough used games there. (Edit: Game Informer kind of sucks actually, it's mostly just advertising to hype pre-orders, although some of the editorials are interesting. But since it's pretty much free, why not get a copy)

Popular Science and Popular Mechanics are good magazines, though I let my subscription to the latter lapse. Smithsonian and National Geographic are obviously excellent choices as well. So is Science, as Melllvar suggested. A friend of mine is one of their news editors.

I find Skeptic magazine to be a pretty good read, it's probably the only magazine I've been able to read cover-to-cover.

If I could afford it I'd be subscribed to New Scientist. It may just be an Australian-UK publication, but I found it far better than the US versions of science magazines.

Cultural bias :D

The Journal of Irreproducible Results? It is hysterically funny, at least.

I second Science, but I've never had a subscription to Nature so I can't compare them like Mellivar. I have always found Astronomy to be beautiful, so if your interests in science tend to the aesthetic, try that one.

I agree with SQ_Minion about Smithsonian being great. I like it better than National Geographic, though mainly because they take up less room.

My husband really likes Guitar Player, though as a drummer I haven't read it myself.

Great thread.
