I know a few here on the forums are serving. I am almost recruited, (about two weeks till I start) and I was wondering how fellow INTP's deal with life in the army and can you give any tips.

I'll probably have to join the army exactly one year and 2 days from now. I'm not much of a disciplined person and I wouldn't hurt a fly even if it asked me to do so. On the hand I have no troubles following orders so I guess my time serving will be something like "I don't like this place and this people, I'll do what they tell - 'cause I have to - and get out of here as soon as possible."

I(guess) am with SpaceYeti but I wouldn't know. I was discharged(?) Because I'm underweight. I could imagine that the 'system' is tough on INTPs but I think there's a great opportunity to meet people that you enjoy being with.

Why Army... ??? Go Air Force... Seriously. It's a much better ride.
Airmen are valued more for their ability and acquired skills, the majority of whom are working on multi million dollar aircraft making sure they don't crash or are harmed in any way. Ultimately, this mission and responsibility leads the USAF to treat you better.

As far as I understood, he is being drafted. When you're drafted you get drafted into the army. At least from where I'm around. Since the Navy and Air Force is so small that they are never in need and if you want a spot, you need to apply. And not everyone enjoys flying, hehe. I can't stand it, it terrifies me.

The Air Force of Australia is probably similar to the USAF in structure... there are plenty of combat related positions in the AF... The USAF has security forces which is pretty much our ground troops for protecting people and assets... they also get to play with lots of heavy weapons short of artillery and tanks.
Does the Austrialian Air Force have special forces... USAF has some...

Do you guys want to kill people - or why would you want to join the army then?

I don't want to kill people, but I realize certain people cannot/will not allow you to live peacefully. I joined the Air National Guard (reserves) because I agree with the premise of the armed forces (I'm not a pacifist) and it's something I've wanted to do since high school.
It is giving part of yourself for the defense of the nation... The problem comes when you're ordered to do something you don't agree with or think is wrong. War is a messy business, but ultimately, the question comes down to will you sit idly by and allow everyone else to fight for your society, family, community, or will you be willing to fight for it? I believe in the United States and I am willing to fight for it. At the level of fighting, right and wrong go out the window and it becomes survival oriented... your team vs. their team... and you need your team to win or you all die... including your family, and community. In the military, you're not responsible for policy... but you put your faith in those above you and fulfill your obligation, complete your mission, and go home and have a home to go to.

The only problem I have with this is that the wars the US are invloved in are aggressive, imperialistic. A few people who have power want more power, and they just simply rationalize reasons for the general public to support their plans. Like the whole africa issue right now (etc).
Its not like USA was attacked and you as a free citizens want to protect your freedom. That would be a different story.
USA is not what it used to be...

Speaking in my personal capacity, as all of this is on INTP forum, I can speak from my own point of view...
I agree that the US is in some shitty wars right now and we need to make some policy shifts which are in the works as we speak. Obama will begin the draw down in Afghanistan this summer and Iraq is pretty much already over...
I think there are some pretty interesting reasons for us going into Iraq, the largest of which was to take control of the world's now proven largest oil reserves. No doubt Saddam was a douche...
In the end, America needs to promote Democracy organically (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen, Syria, etc.)-- not through force.
