Jiuzhang is the first photonic quantum computer to achieve quantum supremacy. It doesn't use superconducting materials, like some others.

"On 3 December 2020, USTC announced in Science that Jiuzhang successfully performed Gaussian boson sampling in 200 seconds, with a maximum of 76 detected photons. The USTC group estimated that it would take 2.5 billion years for the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer to perform the same calculation."

This is highly distressing, what has been created? How will this impact humanity?

By the sounds of it, a much faster computer.

How will this impact humanity?

Depends on how it is used. Potentially, it might be used to break many forms of currently-used encryption within seconds, to spy on humans. Or, it might be used to solve complex problems that humanity currently suffers from, to further humanity.

If used improperly, it will bring us at least one step closer to the coming Butlerian Jihad, when the people will rise up and wipe out all Artifical Intelligence and thinking machines.
