Intelligence testing is a matter that has been subjected to countless debates since Alfred Binet created IQ tests to identify children with mental deficits.

What do you think? Do IQ tests not serve their true purpose, have they became a glorified practice, for people to practice doing mindful yet irrelevant tasks to create the illusion of mental superiority? Do IQ tests have even a fragment of accuracy if you practice doing the subtests? Tell others about your experiences related to these tests and your experiences relating to intelligence in general

OMG I just fucking wrote a like 2 paragraphs and accidentally deleted it....FUCK

Ok, i'll just summarize what I said.

There has already been 3 threads started about IQ's. Most members get annoyed by this but I think it is ok. It let's new members get more easily involved in the forum and feel more comfortable. I hate when I come to a new forum, start a new topic, and then have an old member yell at me for not using the "search" function.

IQ tests are supposed to test your overall "potential". But I have found that they ask knowledge based questions too, which really do not test potential. Most INTP's don't like the test because time is factored into your score. The pressure makes us not perform to our full potential. I think my IQ is 122.

The tests online are also all bullshit. Don't bother taking them. The only online one even close to being "hard" is the one on the mensa website.

Fuck I totally forgot everything I had said earlier....sigh...

Edit: Oh and there are a lot of things it doesn't test too. Like Social intelligence. Wikipedia has a really good article on intelligence. It is interesting.

IQ tests are good for finding out what professions people should be good at, how are different aspects of logic put in use, it should not be considered as "my d*** is bigger than yours contest". People can train their aspects of logic, whether they are visual or spacial or whatever people want to improve.
People with greater IQ's are not by default superior and should not be seen as ones. It does not say anything what an individual is, therefore his/her actions should be seen as some of his/her outcome of his/her IQ. But not that because of his/her IQ, he/she must become to be (X).
IQ is only a fragment of a person. It does not show persons worldview, is he/she "good" or "bad", religious, atheist, what is his/her political spectrum.
Considering all aspects of what a person is, ones great IQ may still end up be seen unseen or a person with a great IQ may still be seen as a dumbf*** just because of his/her actions.

Another thing:

Even though it is stated that famous people like Albert Einstein, the Presidents, etc have high IQ's, it is all just speculation as they have never taken nor shown public their IQ scores. So we can't even really tell if a high IQ score makes someone great. I think only one president has ever released his IQ score. I forgot who it was though. I also read somewhere that Democratic Presidents have had, on average, higher IQ's then Republican Presidents lol.

A well constructed IQ test will have elements of mathematical, verbal, spatial, and logical abilities embedded in the questions. A crappy test would be all math or all vocab, for instance. IQ tests are pretty solid indicators of abstract thinking ability and ability to acquire novel data - i.e., learn in the future - but an IQ of 145 is not "better" than an IQ of 134 per se. Things like drive and interest definitely factor into the mix.

The majority of the question at the IQ test were about math.. and I hate it! Hahaha! when encounter math I'll just skip it. & I think IQ is just based on how fast can you figure out things bcoz it has a time limit w/c means you were under pressure and couldn't think more, we always analyze things in a broader manner so its inconvenient for us or maybe just me to have a IQ test.

I am confident that Einstein had a high IQ. He revolutionized physics and that is no easy task. Also they kept his brain in a jar and, as i understand, the structures associated with spatial reasoning and math are enlarged in Einstein's brain.

Right, Einstein was no mental slouch. However, doesn't it seem like those areas being enlarged may have something to do with the field of work he was in (i.e., physics), and not his individual genius per se?
