Intro

Hello, I've been lurking this site for about 6 months now and I thought it was about time to make an account. I am a first year university student in Ontario, Canada in the department of Computer Science.

I was introduced to the MBTI typology in a Psychology class, and thought it would be interesting to take. I generally enjoy such tests because they are usually way off base, but after researching INTP characteristics I have to admit the test was quite accurate.

Things I enjoy:
-Reading
-Playing guitar/harmonica/piano (learning piano on my own, not that good yet) as well as music
-Physical activities such as: swimming, biking, basketball, volleyball, as well as any other sport/activity I feel an inclination to do at any given time
-I play way to many video games
-I enjoy my math homework far more than is typical of people my age, particularly linear algebra, I find it fun and very applicable to programming and everyday life

I hope this is a sufficient introduction for you all. I look forward to being a part of this forum.

Hello and welcome, not necessarily in that order.

I can't say I find math homework anything other than tedious and boring (usually), but I do agree about linear algebra. That stuff really is interesting and one of the more applicable areas of math I've encountered. I really wish I'd learned how to solve systems of equations using matrices and row operations at a vastly earlier age, instead of that stupid "solve for one variable, plug into another equation" method (I think it's called Gaussian elimination, technically).

Anyway, if you haven't checked it out already you'd probably like abstract algebra a lot too. Maybe not as applicable in everyday life but it really does tie a lot of math concepts together in a more fundamental way. Probably one of the more interesting branches of the subject I've encountered (IMHO).

UWO right now just because I live about 15 minutes away from campus and so it was the cheaper option (plus i get cable, high speed internet, and people make my food). I'm looking to transfer to Waterloo next year though.

Yeah I'm definitely going to take courses for abstract algebra in later years, although I'm not too psyched about memorizing all the proofs lol.

Well I just see it as keeping my options open. You can be a programmer without a degree but you won't get to do any of the fun stuff. :P It's more or less a means to an end, and I enjoy my CS courses as well as my math courses so I don't mind working hard to achieve in those things. On the other hand I took two history courses this year and failed both. I just find essays so pointless.

They were talking about Carl Jung, who proposed the original idea for MBTI typology.

I started because my grandfather played and I spent quite a bit of time with those grandparents before they died. I inherited all his harmonicas which was nice of him. I'm not that great but I do ok.
