I remember watching this interview. I remember thinking he could very well be an INTP who has seen the importance of Se type work.

That guy interviewing him just has no idea, I can't believe how oblivious he is to what Crawford is saying. This is why I don't like to voice my opinions, because I get dumbasses like that whose heads they just go straight over.
You must not be familiar with Colbert. On his show he puts on an act, basically acting like a "dumb Republican". He pretty much satires the dumbness on the political right. Of course, there's plenty on the left too. So yeah, he acts like he has no clue but I think he's actually a smart guy, judging from interviews I've seen of him.

It's more than just Se work though! I haven't read the book but I imagine from the interview that the whole point of it is that the fixing of the bikes is not merely manual work but also knowledge work: it requires continual judgement and revision, even more so than writing abstracts for academic journals which was essentially mindless. There are a lot of implications for this, I imagine which he covers in the book.

Interesting on Colbert, I still have reservations though, his misunderstanding sounded suspiciously genuine.

It takes a little getting used to, but I have the utmost respect for Stephen Colbert. Here's rarely seen interview out of character to get a feel for who he really is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvLS4Jv6Tpw

I think the reason why Stephen seemed lackluster during the interview is because he is a comedian and while he was interested in what Matthew was saying, he struggled to find ways of making jokes for the audience.

-edit- I hope I'm not ruining it for you... its really something of a treat to grow into his character. Most of the interviews he does on camera are in character.

-edit part deux- ok, the point of this thread is to post links of INTP sightings if you know of any. Anything to share?

You know, i'm not really a sports-person, but i do agree that physical work/activity is quite important and also is a good thing, in that it is healthy and also it actually gives you time to think. At least with me it often seems that whne i am physically active, my mind is much more active too.

You're right. Perhaps it could be seen as ISTP work. Of course, that doesn't make him an ISTP, just an INTP who has developed Se enough to use it a great deal.

I hate how the audience laughs after Sheldon says "Here's the problem with teleportation."

...Is that supposed to be a joke? That is ridiculous. The problems with teleportation is not a far removed subject from those I would use in casual conversation. Stupid S audience

That particular show always has me confused about whether to laugh or to be intrigued about their ideas... :)

This is perhaps the most obvious INTP I've ever seen in front of a camera. Straight from Stephen Colbert's Nation, I give you, Matthew B. Crawford

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/231844/june-24-2009/matthew-crawford

This guy seems way cool. Boy do I sure love people like me! :D

I ripped out the walls in my bathroom and re-tiled it, btw, among other trade-related jobs. There is a lot of problem-solving sort of thinking which I enjoy. My INTP bro spends lots o' time fine-tuning his cars so he will get optimal mpg and he builds large fish tanks in which he tries to recreate natural aquatic environments. None of these are just for sensory fun, I would say.

I'm going to have to read this book.

I'm leaning towards the latter. I love tv sitcom characters- they are so well developed and non-stereotypical!

But I could handle hanging out with sheldon. My guess is I'd be the guy who made the adjustments to the algorithm.

I can see myself in his position, i kinda' think along the same lines. Colberts replies really represented the audiences view, and probably most of the US.

Back in college all my classmates started applying for reality shows. "You're not applying?", "you don't like realities?" Ugh. :(

I love the cast of Lost and I often wonder what the MBTIs of the characters are and I'm pretty unsure about most of them. I wonder if any of them are INTP? Faraday seems reasonable... Miles? Richard?

Neil from the Up Series? You guys would love him. He's the only one whose fashion was consistently good throughout his life.

Maybe even Juliet?

And I don't like The Mighty Boosh. Darkplace and IT Crowd are my favorites from those guys.

I got invited for another TV appearance recently. I did not exactly turn it down, but I wanted the bottom line sorted, i.e. dosh. Maybe, you should do it for intrinsic reasons, but then it means for virtually nought and a lot of work is involved (i.e. choosing clean clothes and travelling).

Given that TV is just there to keep SJs occupied by our NFJ overlords: make anyone that doesn't think like the masses a one dimensional character in order to make it easier to generalise and revile as 'the other'. That logical thinking, authority ignoring individual sure is dangerous to the establishment. As such, It's hardly surprising that you rarely see any 'good' portrayals of NTPs. Most of them usually come off as the awkward geek or the arrogant intellectual, rarely allowing for deeper complexity (although I guess it's hard to display on TV the thinking explosions and brain farts going on in someones head).

But then, our lovely SJ brethren dislike venturing into deep waters in case they get eaten, the shallow pools near the beach are much safer. [/generalising rant]

As to Crawford, does seem like a definite INTP, I was actually getting a bit pissed off at the shit spewing from Stephens mouth; catering to the SJs rather than letting the dude get half a sentence out of his mouth.

That first "The Big Bang Theory" link makes me ponder... >.>

Does anyone here watch Dollhouse or Fringe, btw?

I'm curious what type others would think Topher Brink (Dollhouse) and Walter Bishop (Fringe) to be. I tried looking for some good scenes or collections of their quotes but there wasn't anything too useful as far as scenes, and the quotes aren't too amusing out of context.

On second thought, I'm not sure he is an INTP. An introverted thinker but when combined with an interest in motorcycle repair/ mechanical systems, does that not suggest ISTP ?

Yeah, after reading some of the material it seems evident that he's an ISTP. I was so busy looking for someone who talked like an introverted thinker that I didn't fully consider how they were applying their focus. The contents of the book reveal that fact.

This chap seems to be following in the footsteps of Robert Pirsig who wote "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (and who may also be an INTP). Are there any other INTP fans of Robert Pirsig out there?

That is a fabulous book! I do see the similarity as well.

I have to say I love the concept. I enjoy working with my hands. I garden, knit, crochet, sew, woodwork..did dollhouses for a while. There is something that quiets the mind when you work with your hands.

Well, Walter is without a doubt an NT. Why else would he have had to be institutionalized when he clearly is just smart and NOT crazy? Those scary smart people!!!!!!

I've been working on motorcycles and cars since I was 8. The man is dead on. None of my friends come even close to the skills I have in diagnosing mechanical problems. Before I was 8 I dabbled in lego technic. (lol)

Lego's can be quite complex: http://acarol.woz.org/
