I was curious to see what kind of patterns would emerge if we did a poll about our best friends types. I'm talking about your group of really close friends, or your one best friend.
My prediction is there will be very few J's, almost no SJ's, probably a lot of NT's, and probably also a majority of E's.

My four best friends are: ENTP, INTP, INFJ, ESFP

Another thing that might influence people's friends is drugs, these are almost all people I became friends with through weed (that's what the ESFP is doing there, obviously)

Alphabetical order would have been appreciated. >.> I have a hard enough time finding things in a group. ENTP, and INFP. Well, those types are my best guesses.

I think INTJ would make a good friend, but a good real friend I have is ENFP and it seems to work.

I don't tend to go much for extraverted types in general. I enjoy their company at times, especially if they are types who have lots of ideas, but they can be somewhat intimidating. I have four best friends, I'd say,

an INFP
an INFJ with whom I have really interesting conversations
an INTP I only recently realized probably is one
an INTJ I forgot to check off the box for.

ESTJ- 2 of my friends who I get into big arguments with, otherwise pretty cool when we're hanging out. I usually just ignore them (never anything to talk about), we are more like allies in a room full of strangers if shit goes down. Always get a long well with their gf's lol

ISTP/J- 2 of them. One has been my best friend for some time, I think we bonded on introversion and he was patient with my N. Got me into motocross and mountain biking. Our lives seem to be diverging but we are still the best of friends. We generally exchange advice.

The other is probably my unofficial enemy at times, but once in awhile we have a strong bonding experience.

+1 for getting a long with their gf's as well, I've had a few advances after their relationship ended. I would never, it's just disrespectful really.

ENFP- Probably understands me those most out of anyone I know, former classmate turned friend. I was the unintentional class clown and he thought I was a baller.

ISTJ's, ESTJ's, and SF's generally think I'm not all there. Oh well :p

one of my best friends is an INTJ, and my other friends are of IxxP's of sorts. it's difficult to get along with people unless we have something that means a lot to me in common.

The person to whom I am closest is my INTJ father; does that count?...maybe...

Actually, my very best friend is an INTP. His name is Me.

My best friends seem to include most the following types:

- INTP
- INFP
- INFJ
- ISFJ

It's not that I don't have friends of other types (I think I pretty much have at least one decent-level friendship from any type in the list), but the above are the types I bond most quickly, easily, and deeply with.

I'm pretty bad with typing other people, but of my friends that I can tell their types:

ENTP: He's exactly like me, but he's more prone to do everything that I would merely think "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if..."

ESTJ: I'm not sure how much I'd like this guy, if we just met on the street, or if there wasn't any history between us. He's pretty loudmouthed, he'll interrupt me constantly, especially when talking with a mutual friend, and he thinks his story is more interesting, he's politically opposed to me (though fortunately, he's much more apathetic about it, compared to me), he's socially more inept than me (which I didn't think was possible), and he's not exactly the type of guy you'd want to go to for your problems. But we've been friends for ages, and we've got a ton of common interests.

INTJ: He's pretty quiet, and we don't have a ton of common interests, but if we get a topic we both enjoy we can talk for hours. He's recently picked up personality typing, and we've been talking about our theories, and such.

IXFP: She's much more easy going, and she's easiest to talk to about my problems, and we've got a lot of common interests. I don't talk with her a ton, mostly because that ESTJ friend I mentioned before dominates the conversation, but if we're alone, she's probably one of the best friends I have, just to talk to.

only 4% ESFP? That's surprising, I get along with them great, my ex-girlfriend was (probably still is) and ESFP I think, and I have two friends who are ESFP. Their not stupid like SFJ's, and their really fun people. I find their great for philosophical discussions, their not as precise as we are, but they don't put up with bullshit ideas, and we always reach the same conclusions at the end, even if we got there in different ways.

Another interesting thing is that we seem to have a strong preference for Introverts. A lot of INTPs say they get along better with Extroverts. I think the difference is that although we find it easier to start friendships with E's, they never get to be as deep as the friendships with other I's.

I've actually made three of my closest friends take the test, and although that's not the most accurate way to determine types, they all got INFP!

Obvious observation: The top 4 share at least 3 letters with INTP and are all N, but ISTJ is right there, not in N territory yet still far above all other S's.

My current theory as to why ISTJs appear overrepresented, from personal experience: They become loyal to us quickly and recognize our badassery. They recognize, for example, that I learn something that they've been studying for all week in about 5 minutes, and simply declare their allegiance to the Pness.

Allegiance to the Pness lol. Sounds like a phallic cult.

Never had any ISTJs within my circle I think. I usually attract INTx, INFx and ESFx. A couple ENFPs.

My best friends have been ISFJ, INFP, and ISTP.
Next would be ESFP. Then two ESTPs.

With INFPs it's mostly small talk, but still kinda cool.
With ESFPs there's a lot of banter or relating to each other, trading help.
ISFJ and ISTP are similar in that things mostly go unspoken, pretty laidback, can get awkward and boring I guess.
ESTPs take the lead in interaction but they're like robots so it's easier to do something together than just sit and talk.

Srsly, I have 4 of them (possibly more underrepresented since we can only vote once), all undergrads, all my field techs. It's like a small army of worker bees, especially if you can get them to compete against eachother for your acknowledgement/praise/reward (normally beer or food, but usually one of them winds up paying for it, which makes it doubly awesome).

Other than that just an ISFP (my sister, random artsy stuff and veterinary science conversation i.e. stuffing a prolapsed uterus back into a dairy cow) and an INFP (not my sister ;), a lot of humanitarian/sociology stuff, citizen science).

ISFP is a lot more random and private than the INFP, who actually has some goals in mind during conversation.

My most intimate friends test as INFP, INTJ, ENTJ, ENFP, and ESTP. Among my larger circle of friends, SP's and N's are overrepresented with a few SFJ's and an ESTJ or two thrown in. I don't really gravitate towards people for the most part; I just meet people and then form connections or not. The closest friends I mentioned are those whom I know and love and can completely be myself with (which includes talking about weird shit that pops into our respective minds), and we just clique and do random stuff for the sake of it and are just in general on the same page and whatnot. Among my other friends, it's usually bonding and knowing each other through shared interests (outdoorsing, gaming, raving, etc.), talking (whether it be about feelings or nerding out) and liking one another's company in general. Still, etiquette is in the back of my mind, and there are awkward moments. xP

Another pattern I've picked out on is that INFJ's tend to gravitate towards me (INTP thing?), like they assume I'm somehow interesting or something just because I'm quirky and relatively smart, or whatever they think (which I feel is misguided but flattering nonetheless). But it takes me a long time to warm up to INFJ's, so my only INFJ friends are those who've endured a long past of much awkwardness (or shallow charisma) with me.

As of now I've been doing a lot more self/world exploration, but during one time that I look back on with fondness and curiosity, my best friends were ISTP and ENTP.

I've noticed the same, I wonder if it is an INTP thing.

I'd have to agree with you there. E's usually will come up to me and talk my ear off about anything, because I'll usually listen/seem interested. This can be enjoyable for a while depending on the situation -- often it dissolves like a gummy bear in molten potassium chlorate.
