Pretty much as the title says, I will be starting university or college as they say in the US at the end of this summer. (Don't ask what course I'm doing).
What was university like for you guys? Did you enjoy it or not? What things would you do differently if you could go back in time?
I'd pretty much like to get your experiences of colleges/university. :)

One thing I definitely would have done differently:

Give much less shit about grades and give much more shits about actually learning and understanding the stuff they are trying to teach you.

A lot of times you can predict pretty well what an exam will ask, for example. Forget that. Every little thing you merely memorize for the exam, as opposed to learn the thing in a robust way, will come back to bite you in the ass in the future.

Good grades should definitely be a goal, but it should not be the reason for learning something.

Not to hijack, but I'm interested in this thread as well. I start next week. Electronics + Computer Engineering Technology. Associates to start with and branches off into engineering or CS for 4 year.

I'm excited that my first year has coding courses in both semesters, plus the extra sweet fact that I'll be getting paid to go (Post 911 GI Bill + grants), and won't need to work some shit job. Year 2 has internships, so I'm going to bust my ass learning to code and hopefully be able to get an internship (then job) in the field, even if just web dev to get started or something. Keeping my mind open on the electronics side as well. Not as interesting to me though...but maybe I'll like it more, who knows.

And, this question for OP:
What are you studying?

I went to a private college somewhere in the woods.

The things I learned:

1) Weed doesn't mix well with rum and Bob Marley
2) Don't throw up in the sink
3) Potatoes can be served in many different ways

1. Really? I don't know about the rum part, but weed is just about the only thing I've found that makes Bob Marley acceptable.
2. Yes, I agree. Always use the toilet or a neighbor's bushes.
3. This but substitute potatoes for ramen. (Egg, hot dog chunks and chili powder are surprisingly good in ramen.)

All in all though, I really dislike college. Some tips for you, don't take grades seriously, try and make friends but don't expect them to be your best friends ever (a lot of the people you meet at college are liable to be "fake-ass bitches" as they say).

People will tell you to go to office hours or tutoring session or talk to counselors which I personally never saw a use for but then again the fact that I never did these things might be part of the reason I quit after two years.

Being high+drunk while listening to Bob Marley was probably one of the top 3 unpleasant sensory experiences I've ever had in my life. srs

ehhh I've always been against ramen because it pretty much ruins your health with all that sodium. yeah it sort of is weird, since I'm technically asian and all

1. I would have majored in CIS.
2. I would have finished school.
3. I would have gone to the community college in my home town for the first few years.

1. A bit of a chore actually.
2. Only some parts of it. The Physical Education courses that I enrolled in were nice. Majors were hell but some bits were fun. Finally, my humanities subjects were actually fun since I get to do weird stuff and visit different locales.
3. I would have befriended more people first or at least join an org.

I was "homesick" for four years, which I now realize was "sick from separation of familiar people".

A lot of college is networking with people who may or may not turn out to be good to know in the future. That's not the easiest row of corn to hoe for an INTP.

If you need amusement try to hang out with people who are smarter and more successful than you. Sometimes it rubs off. Even if it doesn't it's amusing.

Watch out for the alcohol. It can be chronically overindulged by a bored INTP. (Raises hand.)

Always use protection.

Always use mental protection (not everyone you pair up with is oriented toward long-term relationships - events you may consider landmark or monumental in terms of a relationship may be a casual weekend hookup for others).

Concentrate on good grades the first semester. It will keep your mind from being bored, it will stave off uneasiness, you're probably already good at it and being good at something in the midst of change is good. Depending on the size of the school, it may ease your future in terms of getting grades. If you're blasting top marks right off the "go" sign, and it's a small school, academia takes notice. Higher grades come easier that way than if you start off as a mediocrity. Human nature.

I think that's all. It's all I remember, anyway. (It was the sixties.)

College is for science. Or perhaps it originally was. It's to go there and study nature with like minded people and is a gathering place where funds and devotion make that study possible. Nowadays you can study anything though (English, sports, basket weaving; etc). This is probably by design. Generally, you don't really have to go to college unless you want to do something where you need to. So, it depends. A lot of people have heard that certain if not most programs are only instituted so as to train the next generations of teachers in that field.

I got to read a decent amount of... Stuff. But not nearly the amount I wanted or needed, due to my pace. University libraries are usually decked out and have extensive networks where you can access stuff that would generally be hard to obtain elsewhere. So if you don't want to dish out x amount of cash for whichever book you may be able to find it there, to browse or even decide to buy later if it turns out to look alright. It comes with tuition.

If there's a gym you should use it at least a couple days out the week - maybe. Can help with blood flow (in the brain). The ladies might start to see how active you are and how much physical activity you can withstand but that's the lame part and not why you should go. It isn't my goal to be a gym bro who is into steroids or lifting. Parents started taking us to the gym when I was around fifteen... Hadn't really been since and it started to feel like I was getting fat, so I went. Apparently I'm slightly bigger now but couldn't manage to weigh more than 140 lbs. Had some joint issues so I wanted to grease them up as well. Anyway, they say getting that blood flow can help with studying or is helpful before exams, so could be worth checking out.

The number one piece of advice I see people give is... Get as much pussy as possible, while you can. College might be the best time for that. Usually the girls are more desperate than the guys. There isn't much to it, really. You'll probably just end up inadvertently trolling people.

None of my friends went to the same school so I had to make new ones. Make sure you're in the right major or else your classmates will think you're retarded. In general, there may be some key males who you can say hi to, briefly or not. As someone else said, most of the people could possibly be "fake as bitches", as they say. Depends on how you play your cards, if you can agree with them... Most people are still sort of trying to be as popular as possible.

There are sensors everywhere. They will generally get priority, in addition to some N-females, when it comes to most things. There may be foreign exchange students. You may or may not get along surprisingly well with them.

A lot of the science majors are retarded and are only majoring in a science because of the prestige or potential high paying career. Most of them are not really curious about "science" and have never done it in their spare time.

If you are INTP you will probably see other INTPs there. Doesn't mean that much. That is all

Senior in college, im an intj but here are some general things
1. college is what you make out of it, and dont listen to any of those stereotypes, learn from your own experience.
2. MAKE FRIENDS, there is always somebody for someone. If you go plan a career that is socially focused ie, marketing any business really, connections>experience> school(gpa)
3. Do what you like, or you will hate the academic part of school. Just make sure you get a degree that makes money in the end.

It's hard to second guess since we are shaped by the events in their original form. My only wish would have been to study CS instead of Physics, but then I would have missed out on understanding Physics. Most engineers have a half love affair with it, which tells me there's something missing from their engineering education perhaps.

I wish I would have gotten this advice during my first run at college:

I would sum it up (most of it anyway) as this: take the educational experience more seriously than you take yourself.
