A thread recently on the difficulties of living with Ne prompts a post on various tips and tricks I use to keep focused, some of this has probably been previously published. For background I'm not as hyper-focused as it might seem from these postings. I go through fallow periods, and still have not infrequent times where I have to keep my nose in the dog-pile. So just take it that some degree of distraction is an endemic feature of being an INTP.
So, some things I've picked up over the years ...
So, some things I've picked up over the years ...
- Green or White Tea. Not coffee! I discovered the beverage from traveling in Japan, having removed all caffeine from my diet. Tea (green or white ideally) is the ideal drink for a Ne desiring focus, because yes it really does wake up you up and calm you down. A bit of caffeine (less than coffee usually, unless you try an exotic Gyokuro or the like) gives you focus, and L-theanine encourages Alpha-waves and mild focus. Plus it has numerous health benefits, what's not to like?
- Mild memory and focus supplementation I take "RayAndTerry" Memory support (Ray Kurzweil vitamin hocking company), which contains Ginko Bilboa. It really does improve focus and memory, and has other health benefits.
- Take physical care of yourself It goes without saying, no drugs, eat as healthy a diet as you can (e.g. vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, mushrooms and onions)
- Take emotional care of yourself Keep stress and distractions manageable.
- Mild multitasking Ne is the natural multitasker, Si is on the opposite side of the spectrum. I listen to classical music while I work, nearly all day. It's a great way to listen to the entire Canon, but it also seems to feed Ne's need for differentiation and excitement. I can't listen to anything with English words though, like books on tape or English vocal. That cuts into the programming or writing I'm doing. So if you have a focused task, try music (classical recommended), or perhaps background visuals, working in a crowded area/coffee shop, or the like.
- Get a boss. Seriously, I know we hate them, but it's a necessary relationship. Really have something you're accountable for, something you have to produce, on a daily basis. It trains that focus trait which doesn't always come easily.
- Give Ne its due I reserve the evening as a time for Ne. I surf, think, speculate and the like. Ne, being expansive will want to do a power grab and have more, but it seems that letting it have free run during a part of the day will help mitigate it.
- Practice Get in habits around these ideas, over time they'll come more naturally.
- Give Ne its time in everything you do OK I've got some programming task that just needs to be done. Is there anything about it I can research? This one works great, if I get bored, I just take the task I'm doing and open up a side Wikipedia window on some feature from it. Could be anything, in my example if I'm just making a GUI, I'll do a little research on MVC, or Lambda functions or the Lambda Calculus. Don't let yourself get too derailed, but putting a larger context around a focused task really helps.
