Wouldn't probably call myself artist yet, but the only thing I am rather good at is painting / drawing / photographs / installations / etc.

Anybody else into rather visual/plastic arts ? It seems not as far as I have seen.

I am far better at words and music.

However, I really do like the visual arts. I tend to do better with shape, form, and the suggestive rather than the detailed. I want to suggest mood and ambiance, and I like evocative visual art the best rather than things like impressionism, etc.

I really like photography, where you are exploring the external world and seeing the inherent picture within what already exists (and you just have to envision, locate, and capture it).

My artistic bents/hobbies/skills/interests include:

Playing violin
Playing piano
Playing mandolin
Music composition
Fiction and non-fiction writing
Painting (murals, acrylics, watercolors)
Drawing (mainly architectural sketches, some abstract)
Sculpture (lots of temporary art, like Andy Goldsworthy; I like stone especially)
Stage acting (haven't in a long time, but it was fun and extremely stressful)
Spoken word (I think reading fiction out loud to people is actually quite fun)

I'm an artist/writer/musician.

I could easily say art is my saving grace as an INTP. It brings out my better qualities. It satisfies my need to dream, think, speculate, and look inward. Also, though the art I make is more based on concepts than emotion, art still helps me get better at identifying and thinking about more complex emotions. It brings out my Se as well, in that I have to be very detail oriented with my art, and in touch with myself in order to make music.

And I've also delved into sculpture and photography.

I love visual arts. According to multiple intelligences I am best at Visual/Spatial (see my sig), which is quite accurate I think. I study architecture, draw all the time, lust after cameras, have an obsession with industrial design, and despite its superficiality have a guilty pleasure for fashion design.

I guess arts are part of the family. My dad used to be a photography enthusiast, my mom does pottery and drawing, my older brother (I suspect he's ENTP) does poetry, photography, electronic music, and is in film school, and my older sister is studying industrial design. In fact, my small circle of friends is also made up mostly of artist-ty people. My best friend since primary school's an ENFJ and is also studying architecture, an ex-girlfiend (yes, fiend :)) and other 5 of my friends are industrial designers....

I'm also keen on cinematography and I defend videogames as an art form. I once delved into oil painting but just wasn't patient enough for the medium, needing to wait for stuff to dry (my mom thinks my paintings are pretty and wants to hang them, I think they're hideous and cringe at the thought of it). I once tried computer animation, but it was too time consuming...

Sculpture. Haven't tried it yet, but I want to. I need to find a place that sells decent sculptor's clay.

My focus is pretty much what Jennywocky said, I seek suggestion, ambience and moodyness, more than detail. But I suck at words. I once tried to write a sci fi novel, but never got that far. Eventually it turned into a graphic novel, and after that I just put it on permanent stand-by.
And I suck even more at music. (No I don't wanna sing and no I don't really want to dance with you).

In fact I enjoy music that evokes spaces/shapes and/or is highly layered/structured. I say its architectural. Goethe once said that architecture is frozen music...

I love oil painting. I can't say I'm exceedingly good, but I like it just the same.

I have an office job but my true self is also an artist: I love to draw, paint, sculpt, bend, fold, mutilate, etc.

I also play the piano and love dance. Music and beautiful art/literature can bring a lot of emotion out in me and I find that the act of creating something by hand helps me express what I can't seem to talk about and it forces me to accept imperfection (my perfectionist tendencies can be paralyzing sometimes).

I appreciate visual arts, but am unwilling to learn to create them. I have ideas popping into my head constantly but it would be way too much work to transfer the image from my mind to paper.

I'd rather focus on musical skill sets than visual. I can currently play a lot of instruments. I hate playing other people's music (I don't get why people do this) and am reluctant to write anything down. So I've stayed away from 'formal' musicianship.

Digital photo manipulation, digital graphics w/some web design, a little photography, guitar, bass, drawing are among the arts which I can involve myself with in varying degrees.
But words are what I prefer to paint and sculpt with. To create an atmosphere, an immediate momentary world, a subtle event within another's imagination by choosing the right words and phrases with rhythm and flow, this is my passion and my art.

My hopes and dreams of being an artist were shot down at point blank range - at an early age, by my elders - apparently for economic instability reasons. However art has always been one of my favorite hobbies.

I wish I had continued it...
...someday, perhaps...

That's an excellent description. I don't know how to properly phrase my question, but I suppose I'm wondering how people here have developed such an art. Perhaps someone could start an appropriate thread? (I'm not eloquent enough to have such responsibility)

Are you referring to an art of words?

Yes. I think my interest is specifically in how to cultivate my every-day (every-post) use of language. It lacks flow and style. I'm too inhibited, stunted, aimless, and disorganized. The same can be said of lyrics I've written.

Just off the top of my head (because it's approaching 5:00 a.m. here), my main tools are a thesaurus and a three volume dictionary with etymologies, also some older dictionaries from the late 19th century. When writing, I search for words whose definitions match as close as possible what I am attempting to convey, as well as how the word sounds. Some of imagery is selecting a word because its sound evokes certain thoughts or a mood, such as the difference between the phrase of the night and the word nocturnal or the words drool and salivate.

I also read poetry voraciously, silently and out loud, though imho there is not very much of what is written currently that I would actually consider poetry. I prefer the Romantics, the Pre-Raphealites, the Symbolists, some of Shakespeare, Spenser (I love 'The Faerie Queene') and other poets of that general era. As I am writing, I will read out loud, listening to its rhythm and cadence, basically how it sounds. I tend to pace when I write, so the pronounciation of the word is different than when seated.

On a more personal note, writing verse is the one area of my life where I can not procrastinate. I have interrupted conversations, paused while in resturaunts and stood scribbling in the middle of a sidewalk downtown.
When the Muse whispers... well, you know.:)

Let me sleep on the thread suggestion.

That's hardly an issue anymore. Thanks to the internet, you have a huge audience to advertise to. Also, graphic designers are in high demand and well paid. And it incorporates art and computers, something all INTPs can appreciate. And you can have another job while you get your art career up on its feet.

And please, don't say someday. Someday eventually translates to never. Just go and register for some art classes, visit some galleries. There are not enough openly artistic people in this world.

When I was young (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), my parents wouldn't allow me to take any art or music courses threough junior high and high school because they saw no worth in them. These things weren't practical. The only way I got to read any poetry was through my English classes and poetry I would bring home from the library among other more practical books or novels.

Since I left home at 16, besides immersing myself in my first love, Poetry, I have taught myself guitar, bass, learned to paint (though I'm not really good at it), expanded my drawing abilities and then computers came along.
I taught myself digital graphics and photo maipulation through the Open Source programs Inkscape, Gimp2 and ArtRage. These are free to download and rival almost anything Adobe Graphics Suite has to offer.
I then taught myself CSS3 and XHTML coding script so that I could build websites for some of my friends.

Don't wait for "someday", it is already here.

I guess I should stay away from the "someday" mindset - especially as an INTP :phear:

I guess I could take as many art classes as I can while working on my bachelor's (in either psychology, philosophy, or medicine). I can continue art as my hobby!

My ultimate goal is to be a wise old polymath with a long gray beard :D - knowing psychology/mathematics/medicine/natural medicine/botany/art/music/hydrotherapy/massage therapy/engineering/architecture - and anything else that interest me!

I have a long way to go...
and thanks for the support :D, 'tis very much appreciated!

I sing, however I am no singer, I don't believe I could ever truly be a singer. I started at the age of 7 with Indian classical music and American choral music. Now I continue the classical music and am attempting to learn western music theory. I do however harbor a desire to sing in a rock/alternative band some day. Although the tranquil tones of classic music are beautiful, sometimes I just would like to scream my heart out since normal speech is not my strength.

Some day must be today... My grandma and my mom both dreamed of being singers, however they got married and had kids and had no time at all to practice. In addition my grandma's husband was a tyrant and never let her pursue her goals. Eventually my grandma forgot about the dream and lost it in the dreary every day. She now refuses to even sing at home and admits it is her greatest regret. My mom has a slightly happier story, she also lost focus but now because of my urging has started to practice more and just won her first competition. If you keep putting it off to someday you will loose yourself. Your uncultured talent will become a source of regret. The question is do you want to let your talent and desire go uncultivated if you were to die tomorrow?

Yes! I echo all sentiments and encouragement here, as another gettin' there oldie! There are many many many talented people who are/were doctors/scientists and something else...Chekhov, Bulgakov, Solzhenitsyn, Sakharov, Ethan Canin.(OK, obviously I'm a little more familiar with Russian dudes than others, forgive me. I'm a Slavophile.) You can do it all. You just need to have patience and dedication, and don't be afraid to fail. I think that's one of the INTP pieces of Kryptonite, no? Tell those naysayers in your noggin to shut the f up. I just started making jewelry (all my own designs, no patterns, sometimes I sketch it out, all one-of-a-kind--I never duplicate anything) a few years ago and I have made at least $2000 selling just to people at work. Although that money just supports my addiction to natural stone beads...

Cool! That sounds like the best job ever, if you could make a job out of it.

I can sing (I'm in a choir), I play trumpet, I write fiction and I draw a lot. Paint is too messy for my room, but I do it in class and like it a lot. I like sculpture a lot too.

I'm going to college next year and I plan to study animation. Which means I need to do a portfolio, which means I should probably get up off my butt and actually finish some of those half-done sketches I've done. I never finish anything... I'm always off to the next new idea! Gah. A few paintings probably wouldn't go amiss either.

Wouldn't probably call myself artist yet, but the only thing I am rather good at is painting / drawing / photographs / installations / etc.

Anybody else into rather visual/plastic arts ? It seems not as far as I have seen.

I earned a BA in Art from CSULB. I chose that degree without considering any personality test. I chose to be an art major because I was always good at drawing. When I was young realism fascinated me. What also fascinated me was getting better at drawing.

There is a lot to learn within the realm of art, but sometimes I am much like Rene Magritte when it comes to what I want to paint or draw. Once I solve the artistic problem I have trouble finishing a piece of art because that is boring and laborsome to me. I guess I tend to be more interested in solving the logical problems within it more than I like to commit it to a canvas or whatever.

While I enjoy art it is a tough career choice.

I started taking these personality tests because I would like to be able to settle down in a job I enjoy without feeling like I want to blow my brains out.

I have had some interesting jobs and my resume looks like I have done all sorts of things.

I had fun designing "jigs" for a printing company. I basically figured out how a mold could hold various objects in place for pad printing. The more peculiar the object the more interesting the puzzle. I basically formulated puzzle pieces for my jig in Adobe Illustrator then cut them out of acryclic with a automated laser. I then joined them with some type of acrylic bonding agent.

In the meantime I figured out how to fix their lasers because they were too cheap to call in a techie.

I thought this job was fascinating but it paid me 12 dollars / hour. That is not enough money for me in Southern California. So I just bailed on that company.

Anyways I have an art blog I just started.

Hi,

Pretty new here, but what the heck. Up until now I taught myself piano, electric guitar, electric bass and above all I have always been drawing and painting. Though if I'm honest to myself, I mainly like to analyze 'what works' and what doesn't in terms of visual and musical stimulants.

I have a masters degree in Arts and Heritage, which is mostly dedicated to art philosophy and museum/research. Now I'm kind of doubting on taking the step into a professional art career.
Te problem is however that 1. You get bored very quickly with certain assignments (when working for clients) 2. The pay is vey bad, especially when compared to my former jobs in museums. 3. I always feel somewhat of a cheater when performing. It's very hard to put my brain into 'feel-mode' and just play without trying to analyze and scrutinize what I do. And I'm always thinking of 10 things at the same time. I do have the skills, but I always doubt myself.

I have artist and non-artist friends who really like the work I do and encourage me, but as always the home situation demands a more steady pay.

ummm.. classically trained in percussion/ composing when I was growing up, choir 'til my voice broke (n yes, girl's voices can break.. it isn't pleasant but neither is a high soprano  ) ... was a freelance fantasy/ horror writer for a bit, was sculpting for a bit as well.. now settled into drawing/ painting as a means...

I think it was mentioned a few times, 'bout it being an outlet....? Have to agree.. the world is a dull place without somewhere to scribble on :D

I'm pretty good at writing, though I lack the discipline to write a proper book at this time. I used to play music back a decade and a half ago in school, though I never had any talent for composition. I'm good at drawing mechanical things, but awful at drawing living things. Lately, I've been learning leathercraft, and rather enjoying it.
