I just got a new laptop and now I'm so bored of the internet. I downloaded a shit load of programs (most of which I don't use, but only d/l because they are programs that are impressive to have).

Can you guys recommend some things for me to do?

Go to sourceforge and learn how to program.
Get a nonfiction book about a skill that would only be relevant in a post-apocalyptic setting (like small scale water purification or treating radiation poisoning)
Sign up for an online class at the local community college

hmm... it would help if you could give the time frame this boredom is likely to last

Learn about and install linux :)

(recommended first done on an old computer).

Seriously? The internet is pretty boring to me, too. The only sites that I check regularly are this one, xkcd, and occasionally the enfpforum. Oh, and email, if it's during the school year.

I actually violently hate personal computers, internally. It's not like I can blame them for my lack off willpower, but going through old emulators/roms is like a black hole for absorbing my time. I wouldn't miss these things if I didn't have them (and I don't miss them, when I don't have them), but I still somehow end up wasting tremendous amounts of time playing them, when they're available. And at the end I don't feel like I've gained anything.... I just look back and think "where did all my time go, and why the hell did I feel the need to play through destiny of an emperor again?" Playing around on computers just makes me feel empty inside.

However, getting to know how linux works is actually a lot of fun, mentally stimulating, etc... if you're into that kind of stuff. Probably not a bad skill to have if you're looking to get a job somewhere either.

I just got Win7. It would be a waste to install Linux on my brand new beautiful laptop!

Crytonia, You play with Emulators? Awesome. I have a small collection of SNES roms.

I have this other addictive game I have yet to work. It's called dungeon crawl stone soup. I think everyone here would like it. Old RPG element. Good to get the nongraphic version. Highly logical game.

I used to be bored with the Internet but now it has become more interesting. Since, I am a nerd I love to get raw data sets, crunch the numbers in order to verify results. It entails learning a new subject each time I come across something interesting. My maths and programming skills have vastly improved but so has my electricity bill. Having 6 computers crunch data 24/7 for 2 weeks is nasty. Do not try this with windows. Linux crashes far less. I just find problem solving interesting.

The internet also supplies a almost endless library of books and its free. XD

I hate to say this but after everything you do your going to feel like shit and that you have wasted your time. It is a shame that socializing frustrates me in

@ProxyAmenRa

This past semester I discovered that this kind of stuff is interesting to me. We had to make a very simple FEA simulation that would find a temperature of 2100 nodes. I think its the fact that you are using math to find something usefel in the real world.

6 computers? What are you solving?

@Toad

Read some books. Learn a new skill. Make something with said new skill. Make it an art project. Enjoy it. Love it. Make it your baby.

I'm going to make a smelting furnace. It's insanely entertaining for me. I scour the internet for all kind of info. I think about the system non-stop. I can't wait to actually start running numbers and making drawings.

This example just shows that anything will do.

Read a book, play games (not online), watch some good movies, write, paint, draw, listen to music, daydream...that sort of stuff...or go outside and take a walk.

And yeah, emulators are great. Most I play are games I own for console but it's nice not having to worry about game files getting erased and such.

Why not just dump it then? If it`s boring find something else that`s more interesting. Create something, read something, learn something. There are many things you can do beside sitting in front of that thing.

:confused: Me, I`m bored too. I`d rather read a book or learn a language than browsing the internet... somehow I always end up spending hours in front of it. Don`t ask me what I`m doing, because basically the answer is nothing.

Starting today my SMART goal is: Reduce the time spend in front of the computer (for pleasure) to a maximum of 3 hours and a half by the start of P3.... can`t be tested.
