If we were to find similarities with other animals, would ants be the closest?

Not biologically, but socially speaking. Ants work together and are able to construct structures with huge organization. I don't think any other animals are capable of doing this. Why are most animals solitary? Birds on the other hand are able to travel in large numbers, but they aren't able to use tools. Wolves hunt and travel in packs, but they rarely do this in big numbers.

This leads me to think about another thing. What's the point in having a currency? If humans are animals, when did we start using this system of 'you-owe-me's up to the point where it now defines power? If animals were sentient and able to reason, they would be really weirded out on how we would trade paper bits for food. Some paper gives you more food, and so on.

The practice of exchanging bits of paper for goods becomes more understandable when one considers that money is not an asset but, well.. currency. The reason humans need currency is that we live in societies with a very large variety of skills, talents and goals. If for example my skill is making music while your skill is making furniture, and we didn't have currency, we couldn't make business if I wanted to buy furniture but you didn't need my music (this is called Barter Economy). Whereas with currency, I can give you money for furniture and you can spend that money on whatever you need. This system allows for an efficient economy. Our situation is different from, say, ant colonies which have a very limited number of talents and objectives. They just need builders to make their hive.

I cannot think of any other species on earth that uses currency as opposed to engaging in barter trade.
