So I went to a Burner potluck in Seattle. For people who've been to burning man, or want to go.... I'm in the latter. It was pretty cool! I was worried about being teased for bringing a neon-green waldorf salad, but they were chill. There were many times when I felt there was a large contigent of introverts there too.
I had a lot of interesting conversations....
-talked to someone about holistic tibetan buddhist medicine
-talked to a union plumber about politics in seattle. He's becoming a police officer, since he lost his job- and I asked him how he's not going to become an asshole. He says that he has a friend who's working the hiring process- and she's trying to stack the deck with more cool, chill people like the person I talked to.
-talked to tons of people about what I do, why I came to Seattle, and gave a synopsis of what kind of research I'm doing
-talked to someone about art projects for burning man. An idea he had heard: set up clocks on street corners. Except have them be wrong. And not just wrong, have them go in different directions and at different speeds. And then I talked to him about sails.
(btw I have Hypomania right now... a speeding rush of ideas providing an excitement and a 'high', no way to sleep. I'm hoping that writing down all these ideas will help me calm down.)
you see, my dad sails a 17 foot boat. He doesn't just sail it, he races it. Which means he needs to have his sails in good condition. After a few years the sails stretch out, so he buys new ones every few years.
I think I could use the sails for shading and making a pretty cool campsite.
And it gets better.
I was also thinking about flying the sails as part of the campsite. Maybe have the white sails for sun-protection, but have a colorful spinnaker flying for pride and moral and awesomeness. Attach it to ropes which say "pull me"!
But the winds get really strong at Black Rocky City. I'm not sure how strong, but I think strong enough for...
wait for it...
a land boat!
I want to make a land catamaran. I have connections to the Portland & Seattle small-boat sailing clubs. The parts of the project consist of:
-Finding a mast to use
-Finding, or cutting down, an appropriate sail to use
-Creating a frame
-Finding wheels. I would like 4 wheels, with the back 2 being controlled by a tiller. I was thinking about using bike wheels, but if my catamaran heels over and goes onto 2 wheels, I want to still be able to sail. And I think that if all the weight & torque are on bike wheels they would fail. The big problem is that the weight would be "bending" on the wheels.
-Find a way to have breaks (safety)
-Find a way to attach headlights (safety & awesomeness)
i realize this thread is not very discussion-friendly.............. it's mostly just INTP stream-of-consciousness. comment about anything, and landboat tips would be amazing
