There's various ways, depending on what type of gif you'd like to make?

A. There are gifs in the sense that they're images with transparency.
B. There are gifs in the sense that they're animated images. (like smileys)
C. There are gifs in the sense that they're clips from videos.

A. Download an image editing program. I like to use GIMP.
For transparency, open the picture you want to edit and then: Layer -> Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel. After that, you can use the eraser and whatever you erase will not appear in your final save. Save it as a gif or png.
B. For an animated GIF, again, download an editing program.
You can create multiple layers, by selecting: Layer -> New Layer. Each of these layers will be a slide for the animation. Tinker with them until you've got them all how you want then when you "Save As" type in ".gif" at the end of your image's name - like, stuck to it, no spaces.

You'll be prompted with another window, where you'll select "Save as Animation". This is crucial otherwise your image will be the accumulative of all your layers combined into one. In the next window select the speed you want the images to shift and if you want them to loop, and wala!

C. For animated GIFs from movie/video scenes...
Select your video first and have in on your harddrive. If it's an online video, download it somehow using something like keepvid.com . If you have Windows, open Windows Movie Maker and crop your video to just the part you want animated, then File -> Publish Movie -> and select the lowest quality you have listed.

Once you have your clip on your harddrive somewhere, you can use something like http://gifninja.com/ to make it a gif.

Just a basic breakdown. o.o
This is just the way I do it, there's probably easier ways I don't know about.. :p

Gimp is awesome. Don't forget to add a time delay between the pics in the gif (I don't remember the command; you have to add it to the layer name I think, but I'm sure it's on the internet)! Also save it as enhanced or something so it has a smaller file size.

I just didn't have the right file converter.

I can do it myself (;

I don't feel comfortable downloading things
which is why I didn't do it myself.

And just in case anyone's curious Auburn
leant me a hand.
