Hello. I'm a female INTP (teeter between INTP and INTJ) and am new here.

I think it's a little weird to talk about myself without a lead off, but I'll try anyway.

I love puzzle and problem solving and I'm obsessive when I'm interested in something. I love books, reading, fiction, fandoms, video games. The violin is my main instrument, and I was an orchestra teacher for a decade. I absolutely love learning (mathematics, languages, sciences, history, culture, art, anything and everything). I love art, writing, composing, and almost all types of music. I love the outdoors (Colorado is beautiful).

I'll discuss politics, religion, or just about any topic really. I like to study and won't comment unless I have a reason for what I'm saying, and am very amiable in the way I speak and don't like just being rude in discussions.

I overuse parenthesis (when I'm being true to myself). I've never really fit in, and I've never met another INTP or INTJ in daily life to my knowledge other than my brother. No one seems to get the way we think.

I'm struggling to figure out a career for me (I've read this is common with INTPs?). I get bored so easily and I find it's like pulling teeth to get me to do something I really don't want to do.

I have had a few traumas in my life, but my coping is usually out of site, out of mind. I'm not sure if this is personality or not. I try to be optimistic and yes, I am still full of hope. :)

I'm glad to 'meet' other INTPs... at a distance. ;) I'm hoping to learn from what other people have experienced, realized, or figured out. I'm hoping to figure myself out while I'm at it, or at least get a better idea of me, and to have logical fruitful discussions and just get to know introverts, the introverted way.

Wow, this has turned out to be much longer than I expected. I'm excited to be a part of this forum.

You don't seem like a teeter at all. INTP to the bone ;)

Welcome,

your description seems to indicate INTP indeed, and many of us (as I) know the trouble of not being entirely understood by most people, notable exceptions being academics or other nerds :)

On the other hand, it must in some way be awesome to be both INTP and a pretty girl, I suspect (smooth, I know ;) )...

have fun!

Thank you Turnevies.

I'm sure it's not common to meet INTPs just because of the nature of our personalities (most likely to be found places such as here)... I'm just glad to be in a place where people might understand (redundant I know)...

Smooth as ice cream! :)

It probably didn't get got because I thought the one I said didn't get got which made me incapable of being able to get what you got that I didn't get that you got so now I can't get what you got to get yours.

Another INTP musician who was seduced by their inferior. Welcome.

I'm listening to a rare 1950's mono Richter performance at Carnegie at the moment while I solve engineering problems, and occasionally waste time on INTPf. Maybe you could jump into some computer related work? Just a thought.

And EditorOne, emoji's are for the weak.

So, curiosity, E404 which composers do you prefer?

Myself, if I had to choose, would be the middle to late Romantic era. Chopin, Mahler, Debussy, Rachmaninov. And the early 20cen who inherited that tradition - Nielson, Shostokovitch (not all of his work) and Stravinsky. On the Opera side it tends toward the epic - Turandot and the Ring cycle (saw it live once). These works give me a necessary toilet flush of my soul when needed.

Not that I don't like anything else - what working musician could? I play Bach every day. Mozart is a standout of course. I have to say though, that other than an infatuation with Beethoven during my teenage years I don't listen to him much.

Care to share?

At the moment ...

  • day job <work on a project for Aerospace & Defense>
  • Installing Qubes RC3.2 (hopefully the updated graphics drivers will fix the annoying issues)
  • Building a reinforcement learning system on an embedded system but having resource constraint issues
  • Working on a Kaggle problem
  • Working on a really neat game with my kid (unique platformer idea he has)
  • Burning in a 128GB Titan X Pascal server I put together for ML (just a useless classifier to test the limits of the system)
  • Testing out the limits of my free Azure credits through work (not enough for serious ML it appears which would run into the thousands)

More than I can really manage, have a laundry list of other things I'd like to start on. Anyhow I've found that I need to have several irons in the fire at once to keep it fresh, otherwise I get bored. Probably that must be Ne.

No details on the actual engineering problem? Boooo

Installing Qubes RC3.2 (hopefully the updated graphics drivers will fix the annoying issues)
For home or the workplace? I don't really see the benefit, in the workplace the weakest link is almost always the users and if it's for home... what the are you up to?

Working on a really neat game with my kid (unique platformer idea he has)
Monogame is pretty good, a nice balance between technical freedom and ease of use, go download the Rimworld source files then you've got assets to play with and well conceived file structure set out for you, I keep trying to get into game dev but the groundwork is so time consuming and I've got no artistic talent.
http://www.monogame.net/
(ok admittedly I'm just lazy)

Burning in a 128GB Titan X Pascal server I put together for ML (just a useless classifier to test the limits of the system)
*googles Pascal* Fuck you're old.
So what's the methodology, back propagating Bayesian neural net?

Testing out the limits of my free Azure credits through work (not enough for serious ML it appears which would run into the thousands)
There's always room to optimize, IMO a lot of ML is just getting rid of junk data and if you want to say identify how much of a colour there is in an image sure an NN can do that but there's nothing gained by it, I'm trying to figure out how much I can abstract away into normal software without crippling the NN's flexibility, at least not in the ways that matter.

Violinist or violist? Of Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven, Beethoven is my least favorite. I think it stems from hearing and playing the same pieces too many times. I actually prefer playing Bach over Mozart, which has given me a lot of grief from other musicians. I know that Bach is "simple" compared to Mozart, but I feel more free when I play Bach (Concerto in a minor... ahhhhhhh).

Also, I don't think I mentioned that I injured my shoulder last summer. That's the reason for my career change this spring. I've only played 10 minutes since April. I'm trying to not let it be a source of depression... I wish I could be still be playing everyday!

As far as general love for composers I would agree with your list, but I like a good bit of Shostakovich, and add Dvorak, Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Copeland for 20th century, and Vivaldi. (INTPs are known to be indecisive, right?)

I wish I was more up to date on my operas. I played in the pit for Magic Flute once, but other than that my professors never emphasized opera's and I never knew where to start. I'll probably go research the ones you listed...

You hurt your shoulder eh?
That's a bummer. You could always try playing with your feet :p.
Assuming it's your bow hand, you could try to play a less intensive instrument. Perhaps some fingerstyle guitar (guitar eats up a lot of my free time). Fingerstyle allows to play a very wide range of arrangements with patience. Since you sound like a good violinist your fretting will naturally be pretty good so you'd just have to get comfortable with your picking. Shouldn't be much stress on the shoulder (if your bow hand was injured, your picking hand remains stationary in a comfortable position).

Not really career advice, but if you are musically inclined, it may be worthwhile.

It's actually my left shoulder. I would love to pick up guitar or piano anyway... I guess I've found it hard since I'm use to sounding decent, and on other instruments I'm back to Lightly Row. haha

If I master playing with my feet I'll let you know ;)

What genres do you play on guitar?

I don't really focus on genres. My goal is to learn to play in a similar fashion to the modern fingerstyle players such as (Tommy Emmanuel, Antoine Dufour, Don Ross, etc). I want to tap into all the possible sounds a guitar can make. It's a little difficult while teaching yourself and having no interest in learning music the proper way. My favorite tune to play right now is John Butler's mist, but I try to learn anything I like whether it's a simple tune I heard on the radio or a complex piece. I pick up skills and put them to work slowly. Currently working on some folk tunes, but I'm not really interested in writing songs.

That's a really cool goal. Not enough people play in ways they really want to. You should enjoy playing.

Did you just pick it up one day and start?

Yeah, I started about 6 years ago or so in high school. My father was a guitar player in a Beatles cover band, but he died when I was 4 and his guitar was laying around my house so I decided one day I might as well put it to use. 5 guitars later here I am exploring the guitar in a much different way than when I started.

It's neat you got to play his guitar. :)

This is great to me. Maybe it'll be easier for me to pick another instrument up if I look at it this way.

Also whatever I have to play has to have a continuous sound. I need to be in constant motion or I my playing falls of real quick. So that style appeals to me since you are responsible for playing rhythm, bass, and melodies at the same time. There's always multiple things to be doing so the challenge is great, but it fits my need for constant motion.

For me it's a hobby that really developed at one of my boring lifeguarding jobs. I like to hold on to it as a hidden talent to share with those around me occasionally. Comes in handy if you find yourself at the occasional house party with lots of strangers. It's a godsend when I see a guitar and just stop talking to whoever was introducing themselves to me and just start playing. My friends who invite me to these things are always so surprised and I get a kick out of it.

If you want to develop some passion for it really fast just listen to Tommy Emmanuel's Lewis and Clark (attached)
Other favorites are Antoine dufour's Realiy and Common Ground by Andy McKee (there's a video of him playing at his luthiers shop which is transcendant.

Also for a more classical taste, Ewan Dobson has some fantastic pieces in that realm although he's all over the place (he also found a way to play techno, metal, and mega man themes on an acoustic guitar). My favorite is paganinis whiskey. It begins as a waltz adaption of the bluegrass tune whiskey before breakfast and transitions to slide guitar.

I'm listening to the Tommy Emmanuel video you posted now. I really like it! I'm definitely going to find more by him.

Spanish classical guitar is sexy. Bluegrass is nice too. I'll see what I can find on Paganini's Whiskey...

Tommy Emmanuel may very well be the best guitarist The world has ever seen. My only problem is that he tends to unnecessarily showcase his skills that diminishes the value of the whole arrangement. Such as his rendition of classical gas, there's one full he does that drives me nuts because it sounds so out of place. Lewis and Clark is perfect and I'm making some progress towards learning it. A lot of these virtuosos have rendered popular songs that are way better as instrumentals such as Don Ross's cover of Crazy (Gnarles Barkley) and Mike Dawes' cover of somebody that I used to know.

You started something terrible E404. I blame you for throwing me into this endless drivel about guitar playing. I likely won't be doing anything else the rest of the day (°_°)

Just watched Don Ross' cover of Crazy and it was good... I am bias because I love the original, but it was really good for a cover. I like his overall style of playing.

As you say it's a vast topic. Just pick something that interests you.

Violinist or violist?
Me? Piano.

Also, I don't think I mentioned that I injured my shoulder last summer. That's the reason for my career change this spring.
I'm really sorry, nothing worse than an injured musician unable to play.

As far as general love for composers I would agree with your list, but I like a good bit of Shostakovich, and add Dvorak, Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Copeland for 20th century, and Vivaldi. (INTPs are known to be indecisive, right?)
I don't think that's an INTP thing, I don't know any musician who really pledges to one composer or another. Besides, INTP's, having a judging dominant, are generally decisive in their thinking.

I wish I was more up to date on my operas. I played in the pit for Magic Flute once, but other than that my professors never emphasized opera's and I never knew where to start. I'll probably go research the ones you listed...
It's a different thing for a straight classical musician. If you were ever into SciFi/Fantasy as INTP's commonly are then The Ring cycle is a good starting point.

What exactly is your job? If I may ask... It's source of curiosity for me with INTPs.
Software engineer in scientific/industrial/defensive/aerospace ... technologies. I was a professional musician, went into Physics graduate school then finally found my niche in software.

Me? Piano.

Oh, my apologies. I tried piano in college and was unsuccessful. It's an amazing instrument.

Besides INTP's, having a judging dominant, are generally decisive in their thinking.

Ah, I'm still learning what's the INTP in me and what isn't.

It's a different thing for a straight classical musician. If you were ever into SciFi/Fantasy as INTP's commonly are then The Ring cycle is a good starting point.

I very much am, so maybe I will start there.

Software engineer in scientific/industrial/defensive/aerospace ... technologies. I was a professional musician, went into Physics graduate school then finally found my niche in software.

Neat. That combination sounds interesting...
