I find it more interesting how the brain puts it all together, and stores all that information. Then again, even the brain is a bit flawed, and there's inconsistencies and incorrect information.
How it came to be that way? It's beyond me, how, and if, we gradually got to be linguistic through evolution. But perhaps, a better understanding could be had if we take a look how infants eventually learn the language, and gradually learn how to define their environment.
I think, ultimately, in our mind, everything ends up being defined by a picture or visual representation. (At least, my mind does). When someone says tree, for a very brief instant, a picture of a generic tree comes to mind, thus how I define a tree.
